Best used irons for the price? I have about $385-450 to spend on a set of irons.

Just curious subjectively of course what iron set you would go with if you only had $385-450 to spend total for a 3-P or 4-P set of irons? I’m getting back into the game I used to be scratch or +1 and haven’t played in years due to building a business. Just wanna take it slow and not jump in too deep money wise right now.

Been eye balling the MP-54s and AP2 714’s. There is a nice listing for the 54s on eBay right now at +1/2” which I need that I might snag. Just figured I’d get some opinions before dropping the money.

Thanks for any help!

The world has changed somewhat since you last purchased golf equipment. Perhaps spend a bit more.

@siGno Give us a little more information for what your looking for?  If you were scratch player, then some of those really good habits will start to come back to you.  Just need to figure out what style you want to look at down by the ball and sole design.

I would personally lean towards some players cb’s that have a little more forgiveness.

Those mp54’s could be a good move!  Also, some ideas below…

Bridgestone j40 DPC

Bridgestone j15 cb

Cobra Forged Tour

Callaway X Forged ‘13 or ‘18(might be a stretch)

Let us know how the search goes.  So many good options out there!

New Level 902 Forged. They would still have to be used at your price, but you should be able to find newer sets than you would big name OEM options. And they are great irons.

You can't go wrong with the 714AP2's. Ping S55's would also serve you well.

Been using MP-54's for years, big fan. Not overly compact, but workable and easy to launch for an iron of its size, and they feel great.

The mp54s were either you love them or hate them from everything I've read. I absolutely loved them with the KBS tours. So soft and buttery. Ive played everyone in that category and much prefer the mp54s to even the AP2. I will never sell my set.

+1.  Still playing MP-54s, no plan on changing.  Pretty friendly MPs IMO (same for MP-53s).  As long as you have your preferred shaft and forged heads that you can bend if needed... maybe regrip, have some lead tape ready, you should be good.

I had MP54s for a few years as a “neutral sole” set, falling between Ping i200 and a Callaway Apex MB/X-Forged combo set. Ultimately I didn’t play them much and moved on (without regret) to Srixon Z785.

In my opinion, 54s are ideal for a player who prefers traditional lofts and a neutral sole, brings plenty of spin or needs a little more height, and can control their carry distance within 5-10 yards. Don’t expect a thin topline on your scoring irons, or a ton of forgiveness in the long irons.

AP2’s are great for players who want to have Titleist clubs in their bags.

A few others to take a look at:

Ping S55 or iBlade,

Mizuno JPX 850 Forged or 900 Tour,

Callaway X Forged ‘13 or ‘18,

Srixon Z745, Z965, or Z785.

If you can hit them before buying, I would include testing the Wilson offerings from the last couple of years.  Staff V6's and Staff D7 Forged are a lot of bang for the buck pre-owned.

Srixon Z7 and Z5 series are also great.

Wilson’s feel incredible!  I had the staff cb’s for a minute and kind of wish I held on to them.  Tested the D7’s as well and they were sneaky good.  Some of the best feeling irons.

The Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 are also a GREAT forged iron.  They are well suited to low handicap players, but also offer a good bit of forgiveness.  I sold a set earlier this year, and kinda wish I had held onto them.

Ping iBlades no doubt. Just got a set on the bay for $400. Cast so shouldn't have to worry about browning or groove wear. Compact but forgiving and great feel. There's a reason they haven't released a replacement for them in 5 years.

Can’t say enough good things about buying from Callaway pre-owned. My recent experience with second swing was also good.

With CPO if you have some patience and luck, you can make out really well. Last year I got basically brand new Mavrik pros for wat less than I would have anywhere else used or new.

We're going on a Minimalist Adventure who knows were we'll end up:

Lots of great suggestions here, but you'll have to get in front of a few to really know whats right for you.

Anything you specifically prefer in an iron?  I'd have to say the best all around package is going to be in the Srixon 745/785.  Great looks, lots of forgiveness, and feels like a player iron should.  My second favorite would have to be the Ping S55/iblade.  Something addicting about the Ping feel IMO and like the previous poster mentioned, cast and bulletproof.

I've played with 3 sets of Mizunos since 2008.  I absolutely loved the look and feel of my first Mizunos, MP-60s. I then bought some MP-54s after about 6 years mostly because the MP-60s were dinged up pretty bad.  Then in 2020 i purchased MP-20MMC.  These have been my favorite set so far. They have the compact look and feel like the MP60s, with the distance of the MP54s.  The downside of course is you'll  pay a lot more for the MP-20s. The MP-20s also have a more compact model if you're looking for blades
