Turf Performance

My 980f 3-wood is getting fairly old (the face is no longer smooth, its almost all rough). What are fairway woods that perform from Turf? I mostly hear about people praising certain woods cause they perform off the tee, but that is less of an issue than turf performance. Im wondering in the line of small sized heads.

I like smaller FW metals off the turf. Shallow headed woods. Taylor made 200 steel, Callaway steelhead III, and heads like that. The shallower the better for me off the turf.

Sonartec SS02. This is a great performer from the turf and the tee. Very solid.

I got a V-Steel 4 wood about a year ago and it has totally changed my game from off the turf. I feel like I can work it both ways off the ground very accurately. I've also hit (and liked) the 904f and NP-99 Sonartec. I changed every club in my bag this year... except the V-Steel. Anyways, good luck finding one you like.

If performance off the turf is your main objective, my .02 would be to give a low-lofted hybrid a shot.

 

The 15* Sonartec MD knocked my traditional 3W out of the bag this past season. With the right shaft (I've got an NVS Hybrid in mine) the thing is an absolute killer off the deck from just about any lie. Works great off the tee as well.

 

If the MD isn't your thing, Nickent makes 14* and 15.5* hybrids; the HALO is avail in a 14* or 16* config; TM and Cally offer 14* models, etc, etc, etc.

another vote for the steelhead III here i play the 3 and 5 woods and this is the first time in my life i actually have confidence in the fairway with a wood in my hand. (i used to carry a 1 and 2 iron if that gives you any clue how much i hated those shots)

Another vote for the V-Steel from me. Once I got the Purple Ice in it, it's almost as reliable as my Rescue Mid.

The easiest and best performing 3woods of the deck for me has been in priority order :

 

TM 200steel / stock stiff or my current Fuji speeder 757 - this combo is a true classic IMO.

Cleveland Launcher Comp / Fuji Vista Pro - nice easy elevation

TM 200tour 15* ridgehead / Fuji speeder 757 - If You are on - this is the best combo....

Titleist 904F / NV85 fairway - a very nice allrounder

 

Hardest to use from the deck :

 

TM Vsteel 15*

TM R7 TP 15*

Sonartec SS03 15*

 

Look into a TM 200tour smoothtop if money is no object... :)

I spent this summer looking for a new 3 wood and couldn't find anything I liked better than my TM 200. I even picked up another one last week with a different shaft in it. Out of the woods I tried the easiest to hit 3 wood off the deck was an Adams RPM. It seemed to lack distance and I didn't like the feel of it though.

I picked up a founders club fresh metal 3 wood for fairly cheap, and it is really easy to hit off the turf. I picked mine up for like 80 bucks, and I love it!!
