Are these shafts dunzo?

Question to the builders on here. I have two graphite shafts that I think may be done.

1. Blue shaft is Diamana TB, that I had tipped and put into a Ping adapter. Looks like they splintered the fibers, but maybe just the paint?

2.black shaft is MMT 105tx where my 8 iron head just flew off at the range. Tip looks cracked a bit. Not sure if it can be reinstalled.

Do I now just have a couple of alignment sticks?

Hard to say anything for sure, but the TB looks like it could just be paint splintering while the MMT definitely looks rougher. If the MMT is a taper shaft then you can still safely tip up to 1/2" off it and reinstall, but you'd obviously have to extend it then. The insertion depth of the MMT looks short to me as well, was it in your i210?

If the same place did both of these installs then I would be concerned about their competence/quality control.

If the splintering on the TB was done by the person changing the tip then they owe you a new shaft. That’s terrible work and they ruined the shaft.

The insertion depth looks really shallow on the MMT but it should be ok for a reinstall if it’s seated properly this time.

Thanks for the replies.  Actually had these done at two different places. I can't get the iron head until Tuesday because it is still out on the range and they wouldn't let me go out and grab it. (Very very busy range all hours of the day) I am curious to see how deep the hosel is is and what is inside.

Yeah, the MMT was in the PING i210 8 iron and I thought it looked pretty short/shallow. I think they will take care of it. Good thing I have another set of irons on order, I think I am just going to retire this set of i210s and keep them as a backup.

I actually knew I was rolling the dice on the TB having it done at a golf course where I didn't know the people. Lesson learned on that one.

I think CWebb is one of the more knowledgeable members of the forum, but I have to disagree with him on the TB.  It isn’t easy to tell from pictures, but to me, there looks like a couple of cracks.  Paint doesn’t splinter, but graphite fibers do.  Obviously, you would have the best view.  If it is a crack, do not tip .5 or even 1 inch and think it will be ok.  It probably will be ok for a little while, then it will inevitably fail.

The ion finish on that shaft changes how the finish would break. I had a Hulk break on me and the finish looked like that.

I agree with TTAC here. Go back to the course and insist they replace it.

Can't say for certain on the TB, but the MMT looks like it should be okay.   Like others said, it looks like it may not have been seated enough in the hosel?

I say it should be okay because I pulled a set of Recoils and when I did, the 7I shaft had the outer layers peeling and in general, looked a lot worse than your shaft.  It had some cracks in the outer layer, but I couldn't determine whether that was just the upper layer or through the hole thickness.  I literally could peel the layers off like an onion (of course, I did it one time and went WOAH...let's stop that LOL).  I didn't have a backup shaft at the time, so I went ahead and reshafted it with the new heads and then proceeded to beat tons of balls at my backyard range to make sure it wasn't going to break during play.   Long story short, I never had any issues with it, hit hundreds of range balls and probably 50+ rounds, and recently re-pulled it to sell the heads...looked the same as before (I'm pretty sure the person before me used too much heat to pull it and damaged the outer layers).  The good news is the damaged part of the MMT would be in the hosel and supported around its circumference....if that was anywhere else on the shaft, it likely would snap at some point.

I think you should prepare yourself for the possibility that the head is either no longer where you think it is (lost) or is now damaged by the equipment used by the course workers (range picker and/or lawnmowers).

yep, they were supposed to call me yesterday, but perhaps there is still hope. I already had a new set of irons on order before this happened so have pretty much mentally checked out of this iron set anyway.

That TB looks suspect to me, paint doesnt splinter in perfect lines like that unless the weave of the below material splinters with it........I have screwed up tons of shafts over the years learning to go my own clubwork and thats the only time paint looked like that...

They very likely got too much heat on that and at the very least the outer layer of fibers delaminated.
