About a month ago I swore  off picking the Carolina Panthers ever again for this season.  I went 0-3 the times I selected them. I felt that today they would bounce back and get a win after losing a close one to the WFT.  Well the self proclaimed Superman has thrown 2 early picks and the Dolphins have capitalized on both of Cam's gifts. Miami is whooping Carolina's butt.

It's one hell of a rivalry CH. I grew up a kid in the Bo and Woody days in Detroit for 13 years. I have 4 family members that went to school in Ann Arbor.  Though it's been in my blood since birth  I am not a big U. of Michigan football rah rah fan and never have been. I was fortunate to attend a Rose Bowl as a kid. It was combined with a front row seat to the Rose Parade. That is one fine memory from my youth.   I think Sparty Nation has had a tough go of it being the little bro to U of M. I try to split my allegiance between the two . I  have been a Kirk Cousins fan since he entered the NFL. Meant not to get carried away but cheers CH. The Buckeyes have dominated that contest for more than a decade. The OSU boys have snagged Championship rings twice. Nobody likes Jim, but the former Wolverine QB finally got to eat his cake.  Special too that is was a dominant win........in flurries no less.

 

So here's to us supporting opposing sides CH. 

I'm  considering this win a birthday present.

 

The bars must have closed up unexpectedly WAY early on High Street this weekend  !  🤣

I have not touched a club since last Tuesday. It was a very full week of work for me during the Thanksgiving holiday so I never got a chance to hit the range for any practice. It is now my weekend and I shall put the country club host position behind me and transform myself into the winter golf warrior. It is currently a blustery 28* with grey skies in the AVL. The expected high temp here today is 44 degrees with 25 mph winds. Nah that doesn't work. Y'all know where I am headed. It's to be sunny and 50* with only 10 mph winds down in Tryon. I've been pretty all over the place with my scores this month so I'm not sure what kind of performance to expect today. I do know I am going in with a competitive spirit. I have rounds scheduled both today and tomorrow. These are the last two days of my milestone birthday month. What do ya say I pull off a little bottom of the 9th Scorpio magic and at least snag one W ? 

 

Commish is rather excited to play.

Thanksgiving has become a small event for us.  I did, and I don't do it often, drink beer over the holiday weekend, and it always feels a little weird to be drinking beer at the house.

 

I did hit the sim to get a feel for the power outage and oddly enough I fixed the hybrids and irons after many balls, but the driver?  Not so much.  I have to remind myself to stand tall with bent legs or I fold up a little bit and lose power.  On the driver, with the limited leg bend I was standing up and not hitting the sweet spot often enough.  I, of course, because I am a moron couldn't keep to the 1/2 swings and woke up this morning with a little soreness.

 

I know I have mentioned I have given myself 4 months to take off the BL weight of the summer and I have recruited a cadre of virtual trainers to help me in my efforts.  My wife knows if she didn't do it with me I would be fairly lax, so this morning we did a "Shred Pyramid" for the second time.  I and the Mrs. saw the name and knew we had to take part in a 10 minute shred event and then immediately followed with a Foundation of Strength for beginners afterward.  I am sure my virtual trainer was giving me the usual accolades about being in shape, my form, and focusing on my "Why," but I was so close to passing out/throwing up I missed it all.  Working out for fat guys isn't for the faint of heart.  I will say, I did lose a little this week which is surprising given the general fare and beers.

Sunday November 20th

 

The date was stamped in my brain as soon as the NFL released the 2021-2022 schedule. Not only was it played in Charlotte, a nearby city in which I could attend the game and see my beloved NFL franchise play, but also the over, hyped return of their parodical son Cam Newton added an almost playoff atmosphere to Bank of America stadium. The bandwagon was defiantly spotted in the Queen City with almost every Panther fan sporty some kind of Cam Newton attire. Didn't matter if it was a jersey, the newest "I'm Back!" shirt or a red cap with Newton listed at the top and the number 1 pasted on the cape as if it was a jersey. Gag me! It was almost like the all the Panther fans forgot Halloween was October 31st and instead though it was November 20th because just about every single one of them went googly eyed like they were Louis Lane. Thankfully though the boys from Washington played villain and came out dressed like Lex Luther armed with Kryptonite. Charlotte is a wild town with it being very metropolitan as it is the banking capital of the United States, at the same time though you see a sprawling suburb "New South" like town that is common in Nashville, Atlanta, Charleston, etc. Maybe not as much storied history as Atlanta or Charlestown, but the roots of a Southern town (the Southern charm) are still very prominent event though on the surface it's built more like a global, new millennium intercontinental municipal. Charlotte is engulfed by great food, events, music and culture old and new the best part of the city had to be the swarm of burgundy and gold  that still remain in the area from the days of Joe Gibbs. Charlotte, really North Carolina for the most part was part of the Washington empire before the Panther franchise was introduced in 1993 and playing 2 years later with Jacksonville in the expansion season. 

 

The trip down to Charlotte is somewhat of a bore and can be a drag but once your on the Shelby side of US-74 flashbacks of old dirt racetracks start to show themselves always reminding me this area was and still is the home of stock car racing. The approach also consisted of a picturesque view of Kings Mountain. I always get a kickoff this lonely mountain sitting in an otherwise desolate field of flatness. Having largely grown up in the mountains, I have gotten very customary to see a mountain followed by another mountain consisting of mountain ranges but seeing an isolated mountain like Kings Mountain is almost alien to me and typically warrants a chuckle upon seeing the rocky rigged structure. Geography and geology aside this trip almost never happened before it even began. After asking numerous friend if they wanted to go with their ticket price already covered, most could not as they had family activities to do like raking leaves, getting winter tires on, painting, couldn't get a sitter to escape or they just were to tired from the work week prior they wanted to use the weekend as a way to recharge for the upcoming week with Thanksgiving and the madness it presents. Thankfully though a friend took me up on my offer and so we were outbound to the 704. 

 

Funny enough I had hear from listening to beat reporters in D.C. who cover the team there was a "rally captian" in the Queen City and they would be hosting a Washington fans shindig before the game. First off I didn't realize "rally captains" even existed anymore which was a pleasant surprise to see they do still exist and there was one in Charlotte. For those who don't know a "rally captain" is someone who lives in the opposing teams city but is a fan of the traveling or away team. They then spread the word to all other away team fans in the area saying come party with us and walk with us to the game. Basically a way for the away team fans to come together drink, eat, and share their fandom with others. By some random stroke of luck me and my friend found this place as we were going to a brewery to park and ride the public transport in for the game. Needless to say we called an audible and went to Jack Beagles and partied like it was 1992. I met some really cool people while there, people that had come as far as 3,000 plus miles to see their team. Newbies and veterans alike they were all there dressed to the T From the old school hogettes to the casual fan wearing a Washington shirt having just recently adopted the team as their own. I felt like I had just about died and even if just for a moment visited heaven. The fellowship that is sports and having an analogous desire for victory is something else and something I think I will never forget. My friend who is a Patriots fan by trade(shoutout Q man) also grew up in the New England area but was blow away by the experience even saying "Man for a losing team you guys know how to throw down." I guess could  you call this an omen for what was about to transpire in Bank of America Stadium between the Washington Football Team and the Carolina Panthers 

 

Getting into Bank of America stadium we find out this game is Carolina's salute to service game meaning it featured the men and women of our nation's armed forces with a nice little display of showmanship at halftime. more on that later. After finding our section and breeching into the stadium to behold the arena where today's action would take place I looked up to find the seats and forgot that buying nose bleed seats also mean you got a gym membership for that day also. So I walked the stairway to heaven and finally found our seats where, as expected, a sea of Cam Newton sympathizers also sat. After seeing this I immediately looked over to my friend and said "this is gonna be fun". And with a friendly eye roll she just looked at me, knowing how loud and passionate I was watching my team on the TV, and said " just don't get arrested." Needless to say I had some back-and-forth's with my surrounding counter-parts with just jabs as "Hey Carolina, it must be good to have Bernie Madoff back under center.", or Now I know why your rally call is Keep Pounding", I would just accept it too when my opponents just keep scoring. As pern norm I was greeted with "Well at least we have a team name" or "Hey I didn't know you loved foreskins". All in all both sides loved taking jabs at the other when their team did well. To me that is defiantly an unspoken token of respect that gets passed from one fan to the other when this happens, almost like when 2 rivals do battle after a long standoff. You hate their guts in the heat of competition but love the fact they brought the heat and gave it right back to you. We entered as adversaries and left the best of friends, to the point to when our section was waiting for people to leave their seats after game we all chatted it up about life like where we were from, how we became fans and for how long. This part I enjoyed the most as again it showed that at the end of the day, all things set aside, people are just people. 

 

Touching back on the halftime/theme of the day's game before I end this book, that game was the Panthers Salute to Service game. This game is where the home franchise typically partners up with the local military branches and does charities, raise awareness, sponsor events, etc. The classic flyer over after the national anthem is one of my favorite moments when attending any live sports and this was also held, however with a slight twist. The fly over, at least what I am accustomed to consist of 3 military jets that upon the conclusion of the National Anthem fly over the stadium. This time instead of military jets, we were treated to 2 Apache helicopters and what I believed to be 2 Vietnam Era Huey helicopters with one displaying it was a medic helicopter. A funny saying that has been passed around my family for decades now is "With boys, their toys never change, as they get bigger so too do their toys." This was on full display with my grin reaching ear to ear like Grinch after he stole all the Christmas in Whoville. Halftime was just as good with the local Army paratroopers the "Golden Knights" (not the hockey team) had 5 people of their unit skydive into the stadium. Before, during and after we got a play by play from a commanding office that was on the field, keeping us up to date with each paratroopers motion and why they were doing the things they were doing in the sky. 4 of the 5 that dropped carried a flag . The first being a Panthers flag, followed by South Carolina and North Carolina's state flags and lastly Old Glory herself. A mighty fine sight to see that exemplified and bolstered what was an already electric atmosphere. 

 

The walk back to the car and the drive home was one filled with reflection, rejoice, and reverence. Sure we won. Sure I may have celebrated "a little" too hard but once the clouds in my head had settled, all I could think of was how lucky and thankful was I to be able to attend an NFL game.
