And forever linked with Ben Hogan, playing in his one and only Open Championship in 1953, overcoming the unfamiliarity of Scottish links golf, the smaller golf ball, the cold and damp, to win the Championship in 1953 adding to his wins at the Masters and the US Open (Oakmont).   Oh, and Yani Tseng was the first winner when the women came to play!

If you even know that there were smaller British golf balls and have seen or have owned one...then you're as old as dirt like me.🤣

The smaller British ball - that's what we played in Oz, played it for 20 years.

 

Harder to strike well, harder to putt with, carried further and less susceptible to wind.

 

In other words perfect for ground ball links golf.

 

I much prefer the current (US) ball size.

Played Carnoustie 7 weeks after Van De Velde’s collapse. The rough was way worse than the other courses on that trip. Two things about the course stood out to me. The burn is in play on more holes than other links. The greens were the flattest of any I played in Scotland.  
Finally that 18 th hole is pure terror if you need to par to win. The OB is very close especially left and behind the green.  The day I played it we had perfect weather and I hit 6 iron on and 2 putted for a very happy par.  Of course we weren’t all the way back like the pros. 
if the wind blows the Ladies will have their hands full.

In 2011 when Yani won the WBO...seems like some areas had the fescue cut down vs, what I saw in the 1999 Open Championship.

 

Let's seem how the course is setup next week and if the weather plays havoc.

To be honest most people felt the 99 open was a little over the top.

it was better the next 2 cycles of the men’s version when Harrington and Molinari won. 
the course doesn’t need extra rough to be tough.
