My LPGA inspired bag

Being a bit bored, I started looking around and realized my numbers look a lot closer to an LPGA Tour player thang a PGA, so I took a look at their set makeups and decided to put something together that was similar based on what I already had laying around and what I could get my hands on. (Not so easy right now it turns out). 

 

Played a few times and have to say what a joy it is to hit soft, high shots into tight pins from decent distances. One par 3 today stuck out. 185ish  to the flag. Pin tucked tight to the right side on a shallow collar of green behind a bunker. With a 5 iron, I’d either have to bail left to where the green was deeper or shoot at the pin and accept the ball either rolling through the back or coming up short in the trap. Instead, it was an easy swing with the 5 hybrid and a high, soft fade to 10 feet. (Missed the putt though, ha ha). 
 

Anyone else doing similar? I have to admit It was hard to park the ego, but the results don’t lie.  
 

In case anyone’s interested, my set makeup is below. The gaps matter more than the motley collection of brands to me, and with this set there are consistent 10-12 yard gaps from 5 wood down to the wedges.

PXG 0211 6 iron (old style, 1 degree weak)

I tried replacing my 3 and 4 DI's with hybrids this year.  It was decent for a while, but I just don't get along as well with hybrids.  The old hook shows up at all the wrong times.   I'll give the hybrids some more practice time in the fall, but I am just not as sharp with them as my trusty old mizuno DI's.   I ended up throwing the 4 iron back in the bag and completely dropping the 3 slot and added a 61 degree wedge.

I have a 6H and 7H showing up tomorrow that I'll be testing. I go a little more thin on the top of the bag (though I do have a 3W I can put in), and instead have a bit more at the bottom going PW (46) - AW (51) - SW (56) - LW (60). All of those wedges can be full swing clubs though in a pinch I likely could go 58 instead of 56-60. My swing is starting to come around though, and I've been hitting 6i reasonably well. We'll see how the new hybrids slot in. I figure 6H may join the 4H and 5H, 7H may only be for when I'm feeling off.

Yes, I’ve done something similar this year. Ping G410 hybrids 4, 5 and 6. Maltby PTMs 7 - G and the Kirkland wedge set. Kind of top heavy (bottom heavy?) in the wedges but that’s ok. Callaway Epic Flash driver and Titleist 915 4 wood. Really happy with the set as it exists now. Can live with the big gap between the 4 wood and 4 hybrid. Would much rather hit a 30* hybrid than a 6 iron.

Anyone play the wood like hybrid irons ("4-hybrid") that are in a set like Cobra Trails or Mizuno JPX 921 combo set? Do you like these clubs over the hybrid irons? I believe with the Mizuno's you can go down to a wood like hybrid iron down to an 8 iron.

I think this makes sense for most of the golfers out there. Maybe not this site but most golfers swing speeds are closer to the women’s and not the men’s. I have a friend who looks down a bit as I have 4/5 headcovers in my bag. He has driver and 5 wood only. He also has an 8.5 stiff driver and swings about 90mph. He also carries a 2 iron. I will say he cannot break 100 regularly and I laugh when I am beating him by 15-20 strokes regularly. Play what fits your game. Checking the ego is difficult but once I did a few years ago my game has improved and scores dropped. Game is more fun.

It doesn’t take high speed to launch an Apex DCB 5 iron. Very easy.

Doing something similar for few years now. Using hybrids 3 thru 6 . Carrying a weaker 3 wood at 16 degrees. I agree with the OP , if your swing speeds are closer to the lpga you can learn a lot more from them about equipment than the PGA Tour

I put a 7 wood in the bag this year and it’s been nothing short of spectacular for my game.  That’s as far as I’ve got though…haha.  I freaking love hitting long irons.

I just had my first round with a 7 wood in my bag.  Loved the performance. Seriously considering a 9 wood.

I ditched my 5i for a hybrid years ago after watching Lydia Ko hit her 5 hybrid solidly week after week. A number of LPGA players have 5 hybrids in the bag. 

 

I played Mizuno MPs for years (w/ Nippon 950GH shafts), but when I decided to go with something a little more forgiving I wound up with Ping i200s. The fact that practically every LPGA Ping staffer was playing them, including Brooke Henderson and In Gee Chun, certainly helped with the decision.

The top end of my bag is a bit of an experiment right now. I usually play 50, 54, 58 but decided to try 52,58 so I could play both 7 wood and 4 hybrid. If I decide to go back to the extra wedge, I’ll drop one of these. So far it hasn’t been too much of a problem as the 52 seems to be a good middle ground between 50 and 54.

I am getting close but still like to hit a 4 iron every once in awhile.

 

I have driver, 3w, 7w, 4hybrid, then 4-GW in the irons.  90% I use the 4hybrid instead of the 4 iron unless I punching out.  I have started to really hit the woods well though and may start looking at a 5 and 6 hybrid.

 

I don't care about ego - I care about score.

I finally got a 7 wood and it looks promising it is the same model as my 4 wood that I hit it well. My DCI 962 4i is really a 5 or 6 iron at 24.5 deg. so I should be able to hit it high enough at 188 yards to hold the green given that I am putting a graphite shaft in it with a higher flight than the DG's.

A bag full of hybrids provides some benefits and some negatives. Compromises are a part of all bag compositions.

In 2017 I caddied at a Symetra Tour event (LPGA developmental). Majority of players in 18-25 age group. I got to look in dozens of bags around the practice tee.

 

For club mix, the standard was a driver, 5i through wedges, and variety in bridge clubs. Many had a fairway and two hybrids, or two fairways and one hybrid. Not that many 4 irons, only a couple of driving irons.

 

Moving ahead to 2021, Annika's club mix offers hints for male golfers.

What a bunch of wimps, put that old Hogan 1 iron back in your bag.   If you can't hit this off a bare downhill lie 240 yards and make it stop to a pin 15 feet over a bunker, you shouldn't be playing this game!!!!

I'm a high swing speed player, but have taken a similar approach. Currently I play 4 wood, 7 wood, 4 hybrid, and max forgiveness 5 iron. Playing a 4 wood allows me to keep an extra wedge in the bag, and the 7 wood is the best addition I've ever made.

That's a really interesting idea. I hadn't considered splitting the difference between 3 and 5 woods with a 4 wood. Might try that if the 52,58 experiment on the wedges doesn't work out.

I've been playing a similar set up for the last couple years.

 

I find hybrids much easier to play than long irons.

I feel obliged to mention (yet again, lol) that until creep hit fairways, 3w lofts were 16 or 17, with a 4w at 19 or 20, and so on.  The 13* or 14* loft slot was a 2w, and few carried them.

 

The modern choice of 4w and 7w or hybrid is really a return to lofts that worked for most for decades.

Webb Simpson has a driver, 3w, 5w, 3h, 4H. That’s 5 head covers for a guy who was recently ranked #4 in the world. I’m a PGA so sometimes I get a hard time for having 4-6 head covers in the bag (depends on the day). I say if a #4 guy in the world has 5 head covers no reason I can’t have just as many with my slower speed and playing maybe once a month in season.
