Anyone else get annoyed with guys constantly removing and replacing head covers during a round?

I'll be completely honest, I've developed a skill that not many people are capable of mastering...so its understandable if you add a few seconds to your round each hole. But I actually take my headcovers off WHILE IM WALKING...to the green or to the teebox...so I'm not actually "adding" any time to your or anyone else's day.

This high level skill has been honed over the years so if you aren't capable of doing it, dont kick yourself, it is not a move for amateurs.

^^^^^ This.  I refinished my (used) 35 year old putter and it's not getting beat up again.

I also enjoy looking down at a pristine shiny black FW or Driver crown, that's not going to happen unless they get covered EVERY time they go in the bag.

I always take headcovers off and on while I'm walking.  Never had any complaints.

It's also handy to prevent clubs getting left around the green.  I leave my putter cover next to any extra wedges guaranteeing clubs get picked up because that putter is not going in the bag without a cover.

I play with a couple of guys who use head covers on various clubs.  I don't see the need for them, but maybe someone can tell me why they are necessary.  On every tee where they use driver, they remove the cover, toss it on the tee box, hit the ball, replace the cover (if they remember to pick it up), and repeat on the next tee.  One guy has a putter cover, which he takes off on the green, tosses on the green, replaces on the green, then repeats the same on every green.  Granted, this doesn't add a significant amount of time to the round, but I don't get the need for them at all, and consider any time they add to a round unnecessary.  I used to have one on my driver just because I liked the looks of it, but found I'd rather just grab the club and not have to deal with it.  Is there really any need for them?  How much damage can you really do to a golf club just carrying it around?

This may be the stupidest complaint I've ever heard, surpassing "I hate when people leave broken tee pieces on the tee box."

@jordan2240 Would you care to comment on the various responses you've received?

What's even the point of headcovers if you aren't going to use them? Headcovers aren't going to do anything in a static environment, while your clubs are in storage not moving.

Personally I would think that it's weird to use headcovers while your clubs are completely static, only to remove them when the clubs are actually moving around on the golf course. That's about as silly as wearing a condom all day and then taking it off for sex.

And who cares what others are doing? Golf should be about going out and having fun. If I got to the point that I was worried about how other people handled their clubs, it's time for me to quit the game.

If you DONT use a headcover on your woods/hybrids and replace it after each use I consider you a clown.

You can tell a lot about a man by how he treats his tools.

YMMV I guess.

my pet peeve regarding headcovers is more that every OEM seems to make them like skinny jeans now.

OP might have a point, you ever try to get on an OEM headcover? It's like a fat guy trying to put on a dress shirt that's 2 sizes too small. Probably would take like 5-6 minutes if you don't keep a bottle of baby oil in your bag

I haven't been able to fit an OEM headcover onto a driver since like aught 6.

One of my best ever golf purchases. Out of a bargain bin at PGA Superstore in Scottsdale. $4. A kind of barrel cover, but longer than some I’ve seen. I toss it on the ground as I’m walking to the box, and it’s just stiff enough that it stays open enough that I can just slip the driver into it when I’m walking back. Don’t even have to bend over (which is a good thing for old, lazy, fat dudes)!

Some people are anal about protecting their club heads, why, can't say.  I always wipe my clubs heads off immediately after use, and sometimes wipe them before use, and only have 2 wood covers and putter cover.   I keep the putter cover in my bag while playing.

Likewise, I've always thought covers odd, given irons are slammed into turf/dirt and many people don't wipe clubs off till later.  Then there are those people that forget or lose head covers on past holes.

I know one person that has 14 covers, and find myself feeling a bit miffed waiting for him to put his covers back on everything every few holes.  I understand he doesn't want to lose them, but it takes time.  I suppose what gets me he's not that good of a golfer, and his clubs are not expensive, and his car is not washed regularly.  To each their own weirdness.

Drivers, fairways hybrids etc... have paint finishes which scratch when their heads come in contact with other club heads.

A putter head, when it comes in contact with another golf club head, will become dinged and, or, scratched.

Got 2 golf buddies.

Buddy A: Doesn't use any covers at all (no driver, woods, iron, or putter cover).

Buddy B: Has everything with a cover and removes and replaces it with each swing.

Buddy A is by far the slowest player we play with.

Buddy B is one of the faster player we play with.

Buddy A Had his brand new $550 TM Sim2 Driver damaged cuz his cover was not on and his bag fell out of the cart. (whole separate issue)

Buddy B has resold alot of clubs due to the great shape he keeps them in.

Covers or no covers its all personal preference.  But choose wisely 😛

The video was a little overkill. Plus an iron cover...

Yup it was some mis-aimed video I had of a swing that I figured I would have no use for.  Little did I know it would be marginally useful for a thread such as this.  Yes iron cover and yes on zero time lost in using them.  That was the point.

I have a confession...

I am one of these people.  I take my headcovers off, and put them back on during play.   I always thought that since I did it while walking to the tee box, and put it back on while others were hitting, that nobody would notice.  Imagine my shame as I saw this on GolfWRX of all places.

Also I sometimes take my glove off, it gets sweaty and I want to even out my golfers tan on that hand so it's less obvious.

I've been known to do other things that up until this point in my life had zero impact on others, such as keeping ball markers and tees in my pocket of all places, and occasionally removing my hat to wipe my forehead.  I'm going to take some time away from the game to better myself and understand how my actions cause pain to those around me.

I am truly sorry to all that I have offended by my actions.

Self reflection can be good for oneself.  We often overlook our microaggressions or fool ourselves that they are harmless.

I take my driver cover off on the first tee and leave it off till the 18th. My FW wood covers protect it.

I use FW covers as they would clank together and cause paint chipping.

Take a deep breath and just relax. Why on earth, does something like this bother you? It has nothing to do with you or your game, so who cares?

Seems like you have a secret desire to boss people around. And congrats! As @sittingbullnoted, you have created the newest First World Problem.

As for covers: I use driver HC because it's the longest shaft, and HC avoids shaft getting banged by irons coming out of the bag. My putter is a Tyne design with prongs coming out on either side of the head. The HC prevents irons from catching the prongs when wedges come out.

As for FWs and hybrids, the HCs stay on during transit to stabilize clubs in bag and prevent bumps. But, they stay in the trunk of my car and you won't see them in the operational area of the course.

You think that's strange, how about those people who only carry two tees in their right pocket? They're really annoying.

Everybody knows you need to carry three in the right pocket. Not two and not four. Three.

Just got back from playing a round, so apologies for not responding to every response.  But I'll take them as a resounding 'No'.  Was playing with one of the guys who has to keep his driver headcover on through the round, and when we were both walking, he would be a good 50-100 yards behind me from fiddling around with the cover  - because as MtJeff noted, those things barely fit the modern drivers.  But he rode the back 9 with the other lad I was playing with, so he wasn't as slow by then.  I did have a bag fall off the back of a cart once when I was riding, and it did cause a ding to the driver, so perhaps covers on when riding are beneficial.  I realize that for the most part, most aren't challenged much by using head covers.  This post was inspired by an article in Golf magazine that listed iron head covers as one of the 9 unnecessary accessories that many golfers use, and I thought, based on some of my experience, that could extend to all head covers, and I just had to know what the golfwrx community thought 😉.  It's been entertaining.
