NYS Men’s Championship 2021

Recommended Posts

NYS Men’s Championship finishing up today at Schuyler Meadows Club in Loudonville, NY, near Albany. This course is a gem and ultra exclusive for our area. Kyle Downey out of Locust Country Club is six-under par and leading the tournament. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get over there to see the competition. Of note is Schuyler Meadows player, Sean Puleo, currently in second place at 2 -under par. I played this course years ago and would love to play it again. It’s a beauty.

Schuyler is a fantastic little club, definitely the best course in the Capital Region by far. I've had the good fortune to play that course five or six times when I lived in the area. Every time I was out there it felt like I was in the only group on property. Six under on that course is playing good golf. There's a lot of getable holes out there (1, 2, 10, 11, 13 immediately come to mind) but also quite a few holes that look mundane on the scorecard but are really tricky because of the land they're on or because of the green contours. There's also some impossible pin locations out there they seem to break out for the tournaments. The course also has those old school poa greens that roll so pure.

Smashdh I would say that the bunkers are indicative of Devereux Emmet's style. Not very many sand-flashed faced bunkers, they're more of the steep grassed faced variety with relatively flat bottoms. The fairway bunkers feature lots of geometric shapes and angles which feel more Hanse-esque to me.

Course was awesome, so firm and fast. Have some crazy situations where you have like 70 yards to the pin and just no way to keep the ball on the green, have to lay up to more full yardages or just no chance really. Had like 60 yards into 18 and just no chance. Combination of the firmness with the collection areas short of most greens is such a tough combo. 4th hole especially tough for that. I don't really spin the ball much for a decent player and I spun it down from pin high like 10 yards on green to bottom of collection area. Love the layout. Played poorly and didn't make cut but assuming it played softer for the rounds today based on scores and rain.

Probably legitimately the firmest I've seen a course play, no joke there would be times when you'd have 100 yards into a green and maybe able to keep it on back of green if you landed it near front edge, while keeping in mind there is a collection area/false front that probably runs 30 yards away if you miss short. If you're in the rough then little chance from any yardage in terms of holding the green.

Congrats to you for making it to the am, that’s great. Sorry you didn’t make the cut.

Your synopsis is spot on about the course. The short 4s that have any slope to them are so difficult even with a wedge approach in. 18 is a near impossible green, especially if the pin is back left.

The leaders had a break in that a thunderstorm passed through later in the day softening up the greens. Scores dropped.

Congratulations to James Allen of Scarsdale GC who fired a 66 final day round, total eight-under 280, to claim the victory! Also, congrats to all of the players who contended with some impressive golf at the nearly century-old, originally Devereaux Emmet designed Schuyler Meadows Golf Club course.
