Too much time for golf

platgof

Recommended Posts

I am soon to be retired and have too much time for golf. I have played as much as 4 rounds in one week. I am going to go broke at this rate! If I lived by a golf course I would go broke! I am 64 and have issues with my eyes, but I don't let that stop me from playing.

I am guessing you are saying that you spend too much time on golf?   If $$ is an issue, is there a public course near you that has memberships?   Usually they are much cheaper than a private course although usually not as nice.

As long as you're able, continue to golf, it's a great sport.

My course was $700 for a year of unlimited golf. No tee times needed and I am out there 3 days a week minimum. I pay $6 a round for a power cart because I don't golf for exercise. 🤣

I have decided I will likely retire on or near a course I could play near daily.

Kind of in the same predicament.  Going to likely retire next year, but I’ve worked in the golf industry my entire life.  Have zero interest in working any more at a golf course but don’t know if I can afford the amount of golf I want to play (heck, will my body last too?).  And have no desire to get a membership since all the member courses here are jammed to the hilt with members since COVID hit.
My wife might have to get a second job.

Congrats on the retirement!

You have options for reduced price or free golf.

Find a course that needs volunteers for Marshall, Starter, or even keeping up the course.  Around here it's a few hours a week for free golf.

Another option is the public course annual pass that someone else has already mentioned.  M-F unlimited golf can be very reasonable, even under $1K at some courses.  Unlimited M-F golf combined with an active senior men's club makes for a fun retirement.

I was retired for about 2 years ( got lucky to do it at a relatively young age).  I ended up starting a new business but when I was retired:

Generally,

2 rounds of golf per week

3 days of range, chipping, putting( about 3 hrs total each day)

Gym on non playing days ( 5 days per week-( weight circuit, stretching, and cardio- about 1 - 1.5 hours each day)

Essentially, this schedule took up a lot of my time and the practice and exercise really helped my golf game.

A lot of public courses around here offer senior rates which are quite a bit cheaper

No chance she reads this.  I need to be retired....Not divorced.

Since I got forced into retirement 12+ years ago, I've been fortunate to have joined, over the years, 4 different courses that offered weekday memberships. They all included unlimited golf, carts and range balls (7 days / week) at a minimum. They were never as inexpensive as others have mentioned, typically running around $2400 up front for the year. Sounds like a lot but then again I live in North Texas where we may not be able to play every day but we can play year 'round. I play 5 days / week weather permitting.

Sounds like a good problem to have. Sounds like you need to join a club

I am quite surprised at how easy it is to put things off now that I'm retired.  When I was working I'd only have days off to accomplish tasks around the house, do projects, or go someplace special.

Now that I have unlimited time to do things it's not so important to get major projects done and it's super easy to put something off for a few days because hey, I've got the time to do it later.

Golfing with the Men's club is about the only regularly scheduled thing I have anymore.  Everything else can be done whenever.

And yes, it is a good problem to have, lol.

Don't think you'll go broke if you join a club and four times a week seems ok to me.

I'm going to be near 150 rounds this year. I would be spending about 70, on average in my area to play the public courses.  so one fifty times 70 Is far less than I pay for a yearly membership.  The 200 rounds you play (four times a week) seems to dictate an action.  Good Luck, you'll need that for when you start getting into the gangs.

I could not stand to belong to one club. It just would not work. I did play 18 holes of golf three times last week at different courses. The storm soaked everything so I will wait till tomorrow to play. Did walk nine Monday, but the humidity was stifling. I felt like I had a beating.

I think this is a very different situation if living in the US compared to the UK.

The average golf membership in my part of the UK is around £1000. That's unlimited golf, 7 days a week. Many clubs also over a senior membership which is Monday to Friday golf only at a reduced rate.

The seniors are our club play our club 2 to 3 times a week and every week have an away day to another course. That way they never get bored of one course.

I know the membership cost tend to be much higher in the US so this isn't such a viable option. The main bonus I believe of being a member of a club is the comradery you develop with other members. The social aspect and number of friends I've made due to being a member is worth the money.

I think my fun days are over as the boss wants me back. Plus I may be traveling as well. Played three courses this week, so.... I still need to break my new irons in, at least 10 courses. I will play as much as possible till work starts again.

3 of the Muni courses I play offer membership between $800-$1200 a year for unlimited golf. There are others, I just know these that I've considered.

Played nine yesterday and today also, before the rain came in, and tomorrow is a wash all day. Will play Friday at 12 Stones, never played there, in Nashville, plus Nashville National Monday.  Golf is way cheaper during the week.

Went to the clubhouse and someone payed it forward for me, as in free golf for today. I was there to test out the Apex 19 irons that I extended 5/8". The irons were a total success. Free golf and the irons were great, what a beautiful day, and I played before the rain came in. It was suppose to rain earlier, and I am so glad it did not.

I have many (young) friends who are retired. These golfers either work part time at a golf shop, or marshal at a local course. Either way, they get discount or free golf from their volunteer work as marshals or from their services at the shop. Even so, some courses give military discounts as well............... And there's Golf Moose. lol

I heard about 12 Stones Golf Course and decided to give it a try. I have been sick for about 3 weeks from stomach ailments so not feeling the best. probably a bacterial infection most likely. Anyways the ground was saturated form all the heavy rain the Nashville area has endured for a month. What a scenic course!! It is laying on a group of hills and looks amazing. I wasn't feeling my best, but did okay. Played with a young couple who struggled to keep it in play. One did not have a set of clubs? Don't know has that was allowed? The course it tough on some holes, mostly the uphill ones, some are straight up. My buddy absolutely loved the course. The saturation was the problem, not the course. Rain is again ruining these courses. I give it 3 1/2 stars and am brutal on ratings. Let it dry out and it would play much better as most would. Tennessee is a swamp state, too much rain.
