Anyone play a 5 wood only for their lone Fairway Wood?

My course is short. And courses around here are generally short. Only time I would need a 3 wood off the deck would be after a duffed drive on a par 5.

But I was thinking of getting a 5 wood, tuning the loft down, say to 16.5 and using it as a tee club. Something I could float out there 245ish. Be a great backup for when the driver seems off or when I need more off the tee than my 20* driving iron.

Thoughts?

Personaly, when i carry, i play with 12 clubs. And the only fairway wood i have is a 7 wood.

And honestly, my score has not change at all. Most of the time, i use my 4 wood on the tee when the course is tight. I am not a long player, so i cant never reach a par 5 in two.

When i take that option out, and just played smarter with my 7 wood, i dont see the point of carrying my 4.

If an 18* 5W following a 13.5* Taylormade Original One mini driver counts, I have that setup for my short course. Next club is a 22* hybrid.

That's pretty much my set up except I have a 3 hybrid behind the 5 wood. I can hit the OO off the deck with a decent lie and it goes as far as my drive.

I have been playing my 5 wood only until I got my Honma 3 wood. I need to hit it some before it goes in the bag full time.

Still playing with a 2 iron utility as a possibility.

One step further.. TS2 16.5° with the shaft from a TS2 15°.. so it's playing at standard 3 wood length (in 4 wood head)...

Ooooh….thats interesting. I tested the TSi3 15 and 16.5 together, both set at 15.75 earlier in the year. I also tried the shorter shaft in the 15 and settled on that with a 9* driver for my longer course setup.

Never thought to try it the way you have, but I assume that works out better to get a little more distance and easier off the deck? The 15 is a hard club for me off the deck…

I only play a Ping G410 5 wood and it’s exactly as you described! Longer than driving iron off the tee and great into par 5s and to just advance the ball when you need to. Don’t think i’ll ever go back to a 3 wood!

Very similar to my set-up, I’ve always loved 4-woods.   I dropped my 3-wood and I’m playing a 18* 5-wood turned down to ~17* and a little flatter too (basically a 4-wood).   The slightly shorter length makes playing the 5-wood off the deck much easier.  I do carry a 21* hybrid too with my first iron being a hollow construction 4-iron.

I play a 4 wood. Best of both worlds off tee or turf. But it is not alone as I also carry a 7 wood because I like fairway woods more than hybrids (though am testing the new New Level hybrid at 23 degrees.)

A 4 wood at 16 or 16.5 with the right shaft is very comfortable.

Callaway Paradym Triple Diamond 10.5 w/Diamana TB 60S

PXG GEN6 5 wood w/Diamana S-plus 70 stiff

Yamaha RMX VD 7 wood w/Diamana S-plus 70 stiff

Callaway Mavrik Pro hybrid (22) w/Aldila Tour Blue 85 stiff hybrid

Wilson Staff Model CB 5-G w/DG s300 shafts

Edel T grind 54 w/Nippon 125 wedge shaft

Fourteen RM-12 58 w/Dynamic Golds400

Axis1 Rose putter, 34 inches

I’ve been playing with one fairway wood (5w) the last 6 years and while it generally works out, I may be changing to a two wood setup for gapping purposes (next club is a 4i and I don’t care for hybrids). Likely a 16-17° 4w and a 20-21° 7 wood. I have a driving iron, but realize I’m far more confident with the wood when I don’t need to hit driver.

My current Dr/5w/4i setup leaves just slightly too big of gaps depending on what 5w loft I play on that particular day. I also have an open slot or two in the bag so why not add something new that also simplifies the game (in theory).

It works well, although I rarely hit it.. just think of it as a high lofted 3 wood.. easy to launch from a short tee, and easier to hit off the deck.. TBH I don't really remember what the setting is on the TS2 16.5° as far as loft goes. Playing it at 43" works for me, and plenty long.

I use a Adam’s Tight Lie 3 wood at 16. It was cheap and easy to hit. Not as long as my old 3 wood and a little longer than my Epic Flash 5, that I don’t carry anymore.

Driver: Callaway Paradym 9 set to 10 Draw

3W Callaway  Epic Flash

5w Callaway Epic Flash
Hybrids: 4-5 Epic Flash

Putter: Odyssey Rossie Pro 2.0

I only have a 5 wood then go 3-PW, it works really nicely with my gapping at the top end of the bag. In the future I'll probably go 4w and 7w/hybrid then 4-PW just so if I need to use a fairway off the tee I can get a bit more distance.

Y’all did your job. Ordered a Ping 425 5 wood.

I have the PING G425 5 wood, awesome club! I have never been so consistent of the deck with any fairway wood in my life. Got rid of my Callaway Epic Flash 3 wood. Plus I don't hit my Driver that far so it fits in my gapping fine.

Awesome!  What shaft did you go with?  I’m kind of going out on a limb trying the Rogue White. Just haven’t had time to get to my fitter. May fine tune with fitter over the winter.

For me it’s:

Driver

Cobra F9 Tour 4/5W @ 16* and 42”

Ping G400 4H 22*
4i 24*

It’s all about finding what makes you feel comfortable and gives you useful gaps. I like the Tour 4W head because it looks more like a hybrid at address, which especially suits my eye when hitting off the deck. The 6* loft difference between wood and hybrid looks weird but that’s just the way she goes.

I started with the Rogue White but it was too heavy for me. Ended up going for the lighter CB shaft, if you have a fast swing it will work better, my swing speed is average and bit off more than I can chew 🙂
