"Real Golf"

Not sure about "real golf," but my favorite type of golf course is one that makes you hit every club in your bag at least once, where some of the holes are straight, some are a dogleg left, and some are a dogleg right, and where most of the holes give you multiple options on how to play them.  In other words, a course that requires you to be successful in every aspect of your game, including the mental aspect.

 

And no gimmicks, please.  And by gimmick I mean don't put a bunker or a tree in the center of the fairway, or overuse false front greens, or purposely put mounds in the fairway so you never have a level lie (I'm fine with that if it's the normal lay of the land, though), or have severely-sloped multi-level greens with a 6 inch landing area to keep it on the proper level, etc.  I guess a good result for a good shot is what I'm looking for.

You're describing a dream course, almost a fantasy. I get what you're saying, but maybe twice in several decades of golf have I played a course that actually made me use every club in my bag. In fact, if I'm honest there's few rounds that I couldn't play quite well with eight or nine clubs (I know, a blasphemous thing to say on a website full of club hos hahaha).

 

But a boy can always dream.

The course I play most often has a couple of long Par 3's, so that makes me have to hit a long iron or a hybrid depending on the location of the flag and the tees.

 

It also has some sharp dogleg Par 4s where you can't hit a driver off the tee (heavily tree-lined with very tall trees at the corner), so that makes me have to hit my fairway woods off the tee.

 

The other holes require drivers and mid or short irons, depending on their length.

 

So in the end, I usually end up hitting all of my clubs at least once.  I guess that's why I play it the most often.  🙂

I have found that most people call golf course they struggles at "goofy golf" and golf courses they're comfortable at "real golf."
