do you hit it pure with a 9-iron ?

I'd argue that it is the opposite. I played a lot with a teaching pro at Kaneohe (Marine Corps Base Hawaii) back in the 90's, great player. In-between lessons he would only hit 4 irons off the deck, all day he did this. Maybe he did it because of the wind, I don't know, dude was a ball striker.

I’ve always thought the opposite. If you can hit your longest club off the deck, you should be able to hit all of the shorter ones the same or better.

I think Sutton was meaning to feel like you swing all your other clubs like you do your 9i. Since most amateurs tend to over swing as clubs get longer.

Sutton chose the 9-iron because it bred the tempo and rhythm he wanted (for all the clubs within the bag).

A while back I would hit my 9 iron religiously on the range. I figured anything I could hit with the 9 iron, I could hit with any wedge, and if I could do it with a 9 iron I could do it with an 8 iron and most any wedge, and that would cover nearly all of my approach shots on the golf course.  Back when I did that I think I was more accurate than I am now.  I need to go back to it.

That said, I also really like hitting my 2 iron religiously.  I tee off with it almost half the holes playing the regular tees and course with penalties left and right most holes.  And since I've done that I lose fewer balls and have more confidence.  Growing up, we lived near the golf course in our subdivision.  My dad was a good golfer who would walk over and play 9 all the time. Back then, the nearest hole he would tee off on was a long par 3 where he hit a 3 iron usually, so 200-ish yards with no warm up and the first swing you make from cold-turkey (or warm turkey if you had just eaten warm turkey 5 minutes earlier).  He considered it a great test as a golfer.

End result, I think you should hit the long iron and the short iron. They're both great for your swing.  Add in the driver, but bad habits form there, and the short greenside wedge, and that's really what you need for a core practice shot routine.

Yes, I understand your post, and most every player will swing a 9-iron with a better tempo -rhythm than they do when swinging a longer shafted club. Sutton's practice strategy is unique in that he was very discerning, particular in judging the shots. In other words, instead of being satisfied with a very slight mishit and, or, a  shot a few yards off target, his goal was better precision  than that.  And the 9-iron has enough loft and a short enough shaft to get what he wanted from that club during his practice sessions.

I warm up with my 52° ... as it's the most versatile club for me in my bag. Just start with little 50 yard pitches and work up to full swing.

... but then comes out the 5 for the moment of truth.

I'd love to say I use my gap wedge for warm up too, as I think it's a good club for that, but I really need/want those grooves the sharpest in my bag due to all of the partial swings with that club, so I usually avoid hitting it on the range.  I need to just keep my "previous one" in the bag and use it at the range, and use the newer one on the course.

I practice only off handed. As a righty, I figure if I can groove a good tempo and pure it left handed then when I switch to the correct side of the ball I won’t have an issue.

I guess that’s why my warmups don’t translate. I don’t do them left handed.

I can see some of the merits of what Sutton does, but I would think this practice would be better with a six iron, more center of the bag.

My guess is that Sutton chose the 9-iron (instead of a longer club such as a 6-iron)  because the 9-iron provides the benefit of breeding excellent tempo-rhythm while at the same time is a long enough shaft to not be  automatic-easily accurate. A 6-iron I believe would be too low lofted and too long shafted a club to get the consistent solid-pure-precisely accurate shots he wanted from the practice session.  Again, he knew that if he could get his swing to produce essentially perfectly struck 9-iron shots then the swing was well ready and able  for any club within the bag.

Does anyone know how much time Sutton spent on the practice tee? Maybe he just hated to beat balls like Vijay and got bored and noticeably worse the more he hit (like I do) and so he started out with a 9-iron intending to work his way through the bag. By the time he was happy with his ball striking with the 9, he was ready to get off the range and get on with real golfing. JAT....

Hal Sutton also played on the PGA tour and it was his job to hit hundreds of balls on the regular to hone in his swing for his livelihood.  His thoughts/theory are interesting however, I don't think being a great ball striker with a 9 iron translates to the rest of the clubs in the bag.  Especially for the driver and fairway metals where you tee it up and hit up on it.
