Walking in the rain

Rain is no bueno. Wet golf gloves meaning you cant grip the club properly and suddenly your shots start to go down hill.

I was planning on walking 18 as soon as my nurse wife gets home from work in about 20 minutes..  Looks like I got light steady shower from this dang hurricane for the next several hours. I don't really have golf rain gear, but I really don't care - I haven't hit a ball in nearly two weeks for various reasons and I've been targeting this window since Wednesday when league was cancelled for the other tropical storm. Temps are fine at 81 and should hold high 70s before end of round.

Do it? or will I be terribly regretting it within a few holes?

Sounds like the makings for a country and western song.

My wife is a nurse,

She gets home in twenty.

Got the gear out,

But it's raining a-plenty.

Will I get to go?

Will I get to play?

If the rains passes by,

I just may,

get to play.

I JUST MAY,

GET TO PLAY.

I JUST MAY,

GET TO PLAY.

For those people accustom to whining about challenges, they regret much of their life.  But if you're someone like me, who sees challenge as inviting, playing in rain educates you.  I can't count the number of tournaments I played in while it was raining, many of them I walked too.  With the proper rain gear, it's a wonderful walk.

The only time I recall playing in the rain was ugly, was one of many rounds on the Maui, Plantation course.  Wind had the rain almost horizontal to the ground, so we used weather huts often.  Just make sure you purchase quality rain Goretex rain gear.

Take a bar of soap with you. One less thing to worry about when you get home. 😀

This is how I roll in the PNW. My wife started playing around this time last year and first order of business was getting her high quality Ecco waterproof shoes, a pushcart with umbrella holder, and the biggest umbrella we could find. She golfs rain or shine with me every weekend and even played 9 last weekend in intermittent snow showers. Life is good!

I typically have 1 day a week or play golf and I play regardless of the weather pretty much no matter what.  The only thing I would maybe avoid is cold rain... like I'm talking barely above freezing rain.  I'm a walker and I carry my bag and found that an umbrella is pretty much useless. However, I have found that with the right gear I still really enjoy playing.

This includes:

-Really nice rain shoes.  Nike makes a golf rain boot that works amazingly.

-High quality rain gear.

-Waterproof bucket hat.  The last thing you want is rain dripping down the back of your neck.  Titleist stadry is great.

-Waterproof bag.  This keeps it from getting heavy when walking.

-Waterproof rain towel/rain hood. Keeps the clubs/headcovers reasonably try and can use the inside to clean clubs without carrying a million towels

-Good MCC grips.

-Waterproof speaker so i can still jam (JBL Clip)

-I would say that the rain gloves are the most important thing.  I'm not carrying a million towels or even attempting to keep my clubs/grips dry. If you have good grips they are amazing and slippage is no issue even in soaked heavy rain.

Agree there. The key is embracing it.  Get up for it.  Anytime I’m playing for a dollar or in a comp and it rains -I smile. Most of them hate it and will mentally quit before we start. Most of the rest will quit by the turn , same on windy days.    Play safe , for pars.  Don’t 3 putt. You will be in the hunt guaranteed in any field on earth.

Being geared up for the rain is really the only answer. It's fine to play in and is practically a requirement in the Willamette Valley. Warm and dry feet is where it all starts. After that, everyone prioritizes one thing or another. I have rain gloves and can attest to their crazy effectiveness, but I find I very rarely need them if I've got my bag cover on, umbrella up, and one towel to wipe down the heads after each shot.

It is an outdoor sport. It rains outdoors. Not sure what the problem is with being wet. Like, 90% of our bodies are water (think I read that somewhere). I've travelled a bit. Played the UK, Scotland, Ireland (so freaking beautiful green grass). You don't want to play in the rain there, you don't play golf. But there is clothes. Pants. Hats. Water gloves.

Only difference is that I club one down in iron distances. Not going to get much roll on fairways. And the greens will stimp at six, not 11.

Let yourself get wet. Just play golf. Walk in the rain ....

Just confirmed it - 60% of an adult male body is water.   I wonder if that's true.  The people making these statements are unable to explain why we have an appendix or why some people are lefthanded.

One human body reference per thread, everybody knows the rules.

Push cart, umbrella holder and umbrella, and full bag cover.  If it's raining at a fairly good clip then rain coat, pants, and gloves.  It's fun to play in the rain.

I gave up the umbrella after it blew away from me on several occasions.  Love the rain even more now wearing rain pants, rain jacket, cap, rain gloves.  You can play golf and not babysit an umbrella.

Yes, an umbrella is useless, unless you want to chase it around the course in the wind.  If you're otherwise properly outfitted you are fine.  You can play golf without the umbrella menace.

Big umbrella.  You must have no wind in Oregon.  You send it all up here to Washington state.

Lol, the umbrella holder has a little bungie cord on it to keep it from flying away!  It won't stop it from inverting when it's really windy, but thats more a symptom of a crappy umbrella.  There is a point of diminishing returns and saying f it and staying home🤔which is typically too much wind when it's raining.  Damn umbrella acts like a sail😉

There's very little wind in southern Oregon (not counting the coast).  Real Estate agents use it as a selling point.  It's not too bad except in the winter when folks are burning wood for warmth.  The air gets a little icky to breathe.

Yes, precisely.  I was done with it all when my entire push cart, with umbrella, blew over on the 4th hole in a tournament, spilling all my clubs, while I was putting.  Never looked back.

I just temporarily collapse the umbrella if the wind picks up.  I think I stay drier walking with an umbrella than I do riding in a cart, provided it's not windy.

It was a gust of wind. Blew Ron's cart over at the same time.

That's user error. You clearly didn't have enough booze in the bag to weigh the cart down.

I've had it happen, my cart went down a small hill.  Luckily a sand trap got in the way, lol.  It was a mess.

Huh ?    We don’t usually  get rain and wind at once.  Wind brings rain and  it chases it away. But when it’s raining is usually straight down. If it’s doing both enough to blow an umbrella  , you stay inside.  Period.

Sounds like you've never played golf in Bellingham or at Pacific Dunes in January.  Sideways wind is a given.

No. I tend to stay in the best climate all things considered on earth.   Don’t have any time set to go to worse acting places.
