BMW Championship 2021

70 players remain as the PGA Tour playoffs head into the second event - the BMW Championship. This years event heads to Baltimore, the first PGA Tour event held there since 1962. There are a good few storylines heading into the event but aside from winning, the major talking point will surely be the players jostling for position to make it into the Top 30 and then able to advance to the season ending Tour Championship next week. Max Homa heads into the week as the bubble boy with the likes of Charley Hoffman and Rory McIlroy needing solid performances to ensure that they advance. Having withdrawn due to ill health Patrick Reed has his fate in the hands of others.

Defending Champion:-

Jon Rahm

Notables in the Field:-

Jon Rahm

Dustin Johnson

Collin Morikawa

Xander Schauffele

Justin Thomas

Patrick Cantlay

Bryson DeChambeau

Tony Finau

Brooks Koepka

Hideki Matsuyama

Rory McIlory

Jordan Spieth

Course:-

Caves Valley Golf Club

Par 72

7,542 yards

I wonder how Morikawa’s back is doing.

Hate to hear he's having back issues. He's way too young for that. That pesky golf swing is such an unnatural motion for the lower back. It bit me hard a couple years ago and I've got 25 years on Morikawa. Lost 30 yards driving distance and a couple clubs into greens. Just can't let it go like I used to.

Anyone ever play Caves Valley? Tips for a spectator?

Many times. It plays best in fall but should be pretty good now I would think. Know they had some conditioning issues in the spring.

Good spot might be 11, 12,13 stretch.

11 (it's the old 2) Will be a short drivable par 4 with a slender green.

12 is a very reachable par 5 and should yield quite a few birdies and maybe eagles

13 is a long water fronted par 3

Overall I like Caves. It's not great as a golf course but has all the space and infrastructure required for a PGA event.  Really good practice facilities.

18 is a really good hole too up the driveway to the green with water down the right side.

On the betting side, who does everyone like for value? Rahm is too heavy of a favorite. Can't bet him for that price. He might win, but he's too expensive.

DJ, Morikawa, Justin T, Koepka and Cantlay just haven't been running as hot lately. I hesitate to include Morikawa in that group, but with the back issue he gets lumped. JT can always get it done, but hasn't been where he was for awhile. Lot of boring top 10s.

Out of the notables, I like Bryson and Xander. Bryson always has shorter clubs in and Xander is as hot as anyone.

I also like Hovland, Burns, Varner and Horschel. No special reasons for Horschel other than that I always feel like he can go off for his price.

Varner is hot and an amazing price.

Hovland has a dominating start in him just don't know when. Burns is a value play.

Dark horses? Strong feelings?

Anyone know anything about that golf course’s potential to provide a nice TV experience? Layout and surroundings?

one have to admit, last weekend , NY provides a reasonable skyline…

It's nowhere near anything like the skyline or anything like that. The course is in a hilly area that is known as horse country. There are several high profile horse farms within a few miles of the property including Kevin Plank's.

The course is a Fazio so like most of his it is aesthetically pleasing. It doesn't really have anything super memorable nor does it have any really bad holes. It's pretty solid if uninspired in a way.

It's best suited to be played in the fall when it's not so hot and the trees have turned. I'm afraid this week will require a ton of water on greens and perhaps fairways. That will make the course less interesting.

Hovland will be playing with at least a new putter shaft

What an incredible run, top 15 for 12 straight years.  When you think about how difficult it is to stay in the top 125 for the Tour, it is hard to fathom how well Rory has done.  Impressive...

@BigManSlim is spot on, the course is in Owings Mills and part of a pretty posh old-money part of the Baltimore area. It's not too far from Baltimore Country Club, which still is considered the cream of the crop as far as the private clubs go. The Ravens main facility is out there and I believe the owner and Harbaugh are members there, along with a few other prominent athletes and business types.

It's been dry for almost a week now, and it's hot as hell with high humidity. I would not be surprised to see these guys putting out drives 350+ regularly during the event. For that, I'd say it's bound to play pretty short.

For those traveling to spectate, do not take Baltimore summer weather lightly. Drink a lot of electrolytes and keep shaded as best you can, it's a special kind of brutal this time of year.

Agree, but given what he was doing 8 years ago, who would think he’d have a 7 year major drought.

And consider this,

Just last year Rory was ranked #1.

Hes now #16.

Meantime, Spieth was ranked 74th last year. He’s now at 12.

The course is wild card imo.  How do you evaluate and weight a players ability to adapt and excel at an unknown venue?  What does this course most resemble and what type of player do those courses churn out as winners.

I'm not a better per se, but in my club sweeps I'm liking Xander. The par 3s are going to be quite long (several 220+) and he's up there with Rahm in that category for GIRs.

I also took Cantlay and Ancer on the odds that one of them would have a good week, too many other guys are taking Rahm so I'm trying to play around that.

I read in one place that the rough is short. Somewhere else that it's deep and penal.

7500 yards helps the longer hitter if the rough isn't bad.

Might be the Bryson bounce back.

He'll, if Finau hadn't just spent all his karma I'd like him here too.

JT been too wild off the tee for me lately.

Xander as long as almost anyone. Hard not to like him.

I'd love to take Rory or DJ here, but neither has really been hot by their standards lately.

I'd expect the rough to be thick. It's been really lush in the area recently, usually courses can get heat stressed around this time but the weather conditions have held up fairly well. I'd take @J13's report since he's laid eyes on it and I know he's also local.

I've never played there myself but by most reports it's not terribly narrow. They updated a lot of the fairway bunkering though, so accurate driving is going to play a part if they can't just blast over everything.

Perhaps something going on in his personal life that took the focus off of golf? 🤔 There is a member here that is very good with this sort of thing. Hopefully he will chime in.
