Showed up at the local Course favored by a lot of the local College golfers and met a nice young woman and her caddie on the 1st tee. She was on the Symetra Tour at the time and proceeded to show me what real golf looked like and she was just goofing around trying different things. Just a pleasure to watch her hit the ball.

I think forged Mizunos are a hint.  Played with a nice South African this year in MD pretty unassuming with some nice Mizunos. He was persuaded by another guy to play off the blacks 7000 (the guy suggesting to play off black  oils maybe drive it 220).  The South African guy had game….tune out he tried to qualify for the European tour.  His ball sounded differently when hit.

Nothing - I can't think of any giveaway.

I have seen all kinds of players with all kinds of gear. I have seen plenty of bad players that play 150 rounds a year so have the tan, rough hands and worn shoes. I have seen guys with ugly swings who shoot 70 and guys with a 'great' swings shoot 100.

I can typically guess a players handicap pretty close by seeing 1 practice swing. I have been fooled a couple times though.

The rest of the tells are red herrings.

I play Mizuno mp63s up to a 3 iron

Stand bag and always walk

Old driver ltd pro

Mixed bag consisting of Mizuno, cobra, Cleveland, Callaway and even Nike.

Lead tape like crazy

By some of the comments I should be a superstar but am seriously underachieving at a 5.

I caddied for my Godchild in the local US Am qualifier.  The first day we were paired with a guy from MO.  He had his shirt untucked, no headcover on his driver, no other woods or hybrids and only 13 clubs.  He was -3 going into 18 before making a terrible double.  Turned out he tried to play professionally for a while.

- Rust finish wedges

- A large towel draped over the top of the bag, not attached by carabiner

- An old 1 2 or 3 iron, despite the rest of their irons being relatively new

- Alignment sticks with a purpose built cover in the bag

- Their whole bag looks generally tidy

Well I check off a lot of the "must be a player" boxes listed here...

-Old Mizuno Blades with new grips

-New driver with older fairway wood

-3 iron

-Towel

-Carry bag

-Tan

-Dress decent with kind of worn shoes

I should be on the tour!  But you never know what you're going to get with me... could shoot in the 70's and could be flirting with 90.

I'm quicker to judge somebody by their swing than equipment but I've been wrong there also.

A teen showed up at the range tonight with a well worn and sun-faded pink and gray Titleist Player’s bag. She was walking over to the stalls with a bucket of balls but she also had a shag bag (likely from practicing in the short game area).  She had an AJGA tag on her bag as well.

Fwiw, I’m in SoCal (LA area) and there are a lot of talented juniors in these parts…even at the humble dives that I frequent. 🤓

Her setup is pretty normal for someone who plays on AJGA.

A while back, I arrived at the driving range. I saw there was an empty stall that was sandwiched by stalls that had been occupied. The players weren't there, but their bags were. So I promptly claimed that empty stall (it was a busy day at the range).

In a few minutes, bunch of high school aged players came back. They all play high school golf and all have the game. Some have the AJGA tags.

Imagine the horror of me got sandwiched by these elite juniors. I left quickly cuz it was just ... embarrassing.

I've been fooled by fancy forged blades, premium clothing, scotty cameron putters, names on a golf bag etc before. I cant comment on a dime sized wear mark as I've never creeped a guys clubs that closely haha.

Usually I can tell within a hole or two what type of player a guy is by how he swings, handles his short game and acts around the course.

What I have noticed as far as equipment goes is usually 1 or 2 true things over all these years.

1) Dont bet with a guy who is playing ping eye2's. I've never seen a hacker use those clubs. They have always been players in my experience. They know the clubs are amazing and indestructible and havent changed after 30 years.

2) Stay away from guys with mostly new clubs but an old fairway wood in their bag. They know whats up. They might have a new putter or a fancy new driver but the 3 wood trusty fairway finder is old and never leaving the bag.

Hey - no fair giving up my tells!!

I game PXG clubs through the bag with the exceptions of a 15 year old TM burner 3 wood, a 5 year old Ping mallet putter and 6 year old Ping bag 🙂

One of my poser setups is a set of freshly gripped set of BeCu Ping Eye 2+ irons (2-LW), a 917D2 driver, 915 FD fairway metal or 07’ TMag Burner TP fairway metal, Ping Milled Anser 6 putter, all toted inside my tropical themed Ping moonlight carry bag. Then I do my thing and remove most, if not all, doubt.

Clubs with grooves barely left. Golfs early in the morning so he can get away from wood choppers. Hear him a mile a way as he still goes clink and clank as his metal spikes hit cement walking away from you. Grumpy as hell with anyone. Never talks about his score. He’s no pretender and hates pretense. Rarely gives out a compliment and never wants one himself. Never heard of golfwrx and drinks alone.

It’s based on an actual golfer from my area. City championship and such winner. Slight exaggeration but not too far off. He doesn’t actually golf with many people even his close associates, not sure if he has a friend outside his family but one . Golfwrx to him is for chumps and wannabes .

Livin' proof that Lefties are not naturally talented.

Easiest to spot are in the players in their 20's or younger who have faded out, older stand bags that look worn. BEWARE!!!

Other easy tells that are dead give aways:

Faded, aftermarket head covers for their woods (faded leather ones especially)

Lot's of tags on their bags

Anything that looks like an AJGA tag on their bag

Newer model shoes (last 12 months model) that looks heavily worn

Has multiple gloves attached to their bag drying out

I won't play these guys for money, let's just leave it at that.

Having played money ball for over 40 years, there really is no indicator except the swing, but even that can be deceiving.  A lot of it depends on age.  Every Wednesday morning, I play with a group of 3 other old guys.  We are the first ones out.  A couple of us can barely swing some mornings due to arthritis but there's a lot of low 70s that get carded.  Good course management and a good short game can overcome a lot of deficiencies.

The things I watch out for before putting money down are:

1. New model shoes that are already overly worn out.

2. Several worn gloves in the bag.

3. An eclectic mix of clubs that all show heavy wear.  Players will play what works and could care less about brand name.

None of these is a guarantee, but make me think twice before putting very much on the line per hole.

Side note:  Having looped more than a few high level rounds, take a look at some of the WITB pictures of sponsored players.  The head cover and bag are likely from their sponsor manufacturer, but what's under the cover is almost never the same brand.  Play what works.  A name brand never guaranteed a circle.
