Making full turn

Recommended Posts

I really struggle at times to make a full shoulder turn on backswing. This only happens on the course and is definitely a result of locking in on the ball too much.  Basically I get get afraid to make a full shoulder turn because I am afraid to turn away from the ball. This throws everything off and I start leaving everything to the right. Driver becomes the biggest problem.

It’s possible that being rear eye dominant contributes to this as well as it seems like with a full turn I really only have my lead eye on the ball.

I’ve seen some players position/tilt their head and neck in a way that seems to preset their eyes to still be on the ball at the end of a full turn. I think Spieth does this; Rory kind of does it. I’ve seen gankas talk about rotating head through the shot to help players get more open at impact, so maybe same is true for backswing.

I thought I also heard Vijay hits range balls with his eyes closed, but I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to be the guy who says he doesn’t look at the ball.

Any recommendations? Maybe I need to focus on turning my head/neck in backswing which will promote more shoulder turn.

One Thing to try that might help is point shoulder to ball on backswing, then move ball back in stance, or pick a blade of grass behind ball and point shoulder to that spot. This will really help you get a full shoulder turn

A good turn/pivot starts with proper address  posture, light grip pressure, and relaxed shoulders.

Eye dominance has little impact because of how the eyes work.

Can't really tell what's going on without a video of your swing because shoulder turn issues can be the result of many things.

For instance, my shoulder turn issues actually start due to my right elbow and right wrist being out of whack and thus I end up over-tilting towards the target and not getting the turn I need.

Others may have the simple issue of not extending their trail knee which allows the pelvis to turn which allows the shoulders to turn more.

I have the same “feeling”. A complete turn feels like I’m moving so far from address that I can’t return to a good impact position because it’s so far away.

OP@ I know a guy who doesn't worry about a full shoulder turn because he's not that flexible. He turns his shoulder about even with the ball on his back swing and just pounds it. Told me once he doesn't even look at the ball, picks out a spot just ahead of it on short irons and a little further out on his woods.

This.

And stop thinking in terms of "turn".  Stay loose and simply push away from the momentum of the club throughout the swing.  Right hip gets pushed straight back out of the way going back and same with left hip on through swing.  Shoulders stay perpetually loose and are simply along for the ride.  If want a full turn last thing you want to do is try to turn your shoulders.

Sometimes I hold the club lightly with only with thumb/index/middle fingers of both hands and simply feel the club lever on both sides of the swing.  Video it.  You'll feel like you're not turning at all, but you'll have the most beautiful pivot and turn as your body simply reacts to the levering club as you utilize all the natural momentum it creates.

On light grip pressure.  https://www.instagram.com/p/CTP-LrQnJ1G/

And without video everything is a guess - so any recommendation a crap shoot.
