Weird bag question

NJBigFish22

Recommended Posts

So a new TM video with Rory and Tommy Fleetwood hitting left handed shots and another course vlog where a KFT player was up against a tree and turned his club over.  This got me thinking.  If you had your bag set up with perfect gapping, and it only took 13 clubs, and if you played on a tree lined course, would you put a left handed club in your bag in the event you were up against a tree or other obstacle?  If you would do this, what Iron would you choose?  Personally I think 7 iron.

Driver - Testing in Progress

The lengths that people with our addiction passion will go through to talk about anything related to golf absolutely astounds me.

Unrelated.. I'd probably go with a hybrid

I hit my clubs poor enough as is the proper way, I see no benefit to having a lone opposite handed club. If I'm really stuck up against something that requires a shot the other way, I'm just flipping a club over and knocking it out, my goal at that point in time is to get away from the obstacle, I'm not trying to advance the ball 150 yards. For a swing you'll perform once in a blue moon, you have a higher chance of messing it up and getting deeper into trouble. I personally think you should try and keep as few one dimensional clubs in the bag as possible. Driver and putter are two already gone, I'd rather add another specialty wedge than an opposite handed club.

I just bought a ladies lefty 25* Mavrik Max SGI off Ebay.  I went with a lower loft than a 7 iron to allow the trajectory to travel under obstacles.  It is my lowest lofted iron, so it doesn't duplicate anything in the bag.

I have a slow swing speed so I have plenty of room in my bag.  The slow swing speed not only makes gapping easier but reduces the usefulness of low lofted clubs.

It didn't take long at all for me to hit my 20 inch practice net at ten yards from 3 inch rough.

Due to my stroke my left side has better coordination and fine motion skills than my right.  I went with right hand clubs as I'm left eye dominant and the fact that right hand clubs are much easier to find.

I may also be able to use the club to advance the ball in windy conditions, should the need arise.

I’d go 7 hybrid. Idea being to go for something super forgiving — just hit it anywhere on the club face and you’re getting it moving and up in the air a bit.

These golfers like DJ that can play well left handed are irritating!  It’s so hard.  Someone suggested hitting balls left handed on the range as some sort of training/back strengthening exercise.  I can hardly make contact.  And I switch hit in baseball and at 43 can still hit a decent fastball left handed without issue.  This made me think I was going to be able to hit golf balls left handed…so there is no way I’m using up a precious slot in my bag to eventually end up swinging and missing at the ball left handed.

If the spot wouldn’t be filled otherwise, then as crazy as it sounds, why not one of those two way chippers?  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ it just may work

That must be the reason they are sold out 😝

Nice idea but aren't they illegal though for some tournament play?

May be legal for club completions though?

Very few tour players wouldn't have a full bag. Keep in mind that most of them have four wedges, if not five, let alone all the rest. When faced with a left handed shot to get the ball back into play most will use either the putter, if it's a blade, or a long iron, hitting backwards.

A club soooooo good they had to ban it for tournament play 😂

what’s next, no Slingers……. an iron I actually played a few rounds of golf with for fun, because they were in the cart barn at the golf course I worked at as a teenager in the  90’s

In all seriousness, if a left handed club is being considered as a 14th club, I’d chose a cheap left handed Single length 4 iron for its shorter shaft, upright lie angle and low number to keep it low……… not something I would ever do because my lefty swing is awful and I may miss the ball

Slingers 😂⤵️

Yes, an iron is easier to hit than a hybrid because the shaft is shorter.

A properly designed ladies iron is designed for a sweeping swing that doesn't take divots.  Ladies typically don't take divots.

I take a lot of divots with my right handed swing but it seems to be pretty easy to avoid doing that with my new left handed swing.

I got a really nice club on ebay--there isn't much of a demand for ladies irons with low lofts.

A hybrid or lefty putter would probably the best option if you are knocking it 10-15 yards on the ground.  I also like the thought of a single length iron or ladies club.

Sure, but I just don’t think the situation would arise often enough to make it worth it.

And remember, there are no such things as weird bag questions, only weird people who ask bag questions! 🤣😂🤣😂

Just turn your iron upside down and hit, no real point IMO in wasting a club on something you won't use much.  I can't think of too many situations in the last few years where this would have come in handy.
