best paintfill for putters

mktrout

Recommended Posts

Ive tried the normal Testors and Tamiya.  Seems like even after several days of drying, when you clean your putter some of the paint still comes off.  And they both seem to come off super easy with acetone as compared to the factory paint.  The black always seems kind matte finish too instead of more glossy like factory paint, even when its the glossy version.  Is there something better?  Or do they clearcoat it after?  If so what clear coat to make the paint last better and be more glossy?  Thanks

I've picked up a few colors of this: https://alpha6corporation.com/alphanamel/

Always looking for something that gives a guy an edge.  Not sure if this brand will be the answer, but it has a solid reputation in the pinstriping world and a local paint shop carries a bunch of colors.

Worth a look.  I have to ask, what are you using to clean your putter that makes ANY of the paint fill come off?  I've been in this crazy game for a while and soapy water has never been an issue with cleaning a club.  We all do things differently, but you shouldn't ever have an issue with fill by simply cleaning your clubs after a round or two.

Just one Mann's opinion,

What's your prep like? If there is an oil of some sort on the putter the paint won't stick as I know this from experience.

Yes, oil on the surface from routine maintenance will definitely have an effect.  I have had letters completely fall out, due to lack of thorough cleaning, prior to applying the paint fill.  It was not a fun exchange to have...........the gentleman who's putter it was, had taken delivery in Singapore, 😂.

Prep is key, but this just seems to be more of a product issue, to some degree.  Paint fill that is already in place and just not holding up on the surface.   I could be wrong, no doubt about that.  Any and all ideas contribute to finding the culprit.

I have a ridiculous amount of paint fill.  It ranges from Nail Polish enamels to Testors to Tamiya for their translucent colors.  Each has their perfect place, IMHO, but some guys do not agree.   I suggest you try these and don't be afraid to experiment with some brands that may seem odd to you.  Trying new things and sharing here is the absolute best way for the community to learn of ways that might be hiding from us.

Post pix if you have any examples of new efforts.

Best of luck,

one of the things I notice, that I cant seem to get away from, is, when I paint one, then clean it up the over fill with acetone, that glossy paint no longer looks glossy.  It looks dull and sometimes grainy.  How do you get around that?

When you clean up with acetone over the top, make sure the paint isn't fully dry. I religiously wait 30 mins, timer on my phone. I've found this is long enough for the paint to fill the gaps and dry just enough so that when you wipe over the top with acetone, it won't soak into the cotton pad. If it's too dry, the acetone can cause bubbling/grain in my experience. Too wet and it doesn't stay put. Goldilocks we'll call it. 30 mins is my time but I would edge towards wiping away while the paint is still slightly wet. This gives you time to address any blemishes before full drying time.

I was going to venture into doing my own paint fill.  Was told to remove old paint and use a high quality  acrylic from a craft or hobby shop.  Then I found a guy 1hr west of Toronto that does paintfill, stamping, paintfill in stamping pretty cheap.  Saw pics of his work, looked great.  I got him to remove all the green paint on my Toulon and change it to cherry red.  $10 and it looks perfect.

Out of curiosity how did you find this guy? I'm not even remotely close to Toronto, but I wouldn't mind finding someone in my metro area that could do this.

I could do it myself and have done so before, but similar to changing my oil in the car I'll gladly pay someone else $50 or so to do it and save myself the hassle 🤣.

Starting to dabble in this myself. Is the Testors you guys use the acrylic or enamel? Any benefits or cons to either? Thanks in advance!

I actually found this guy on facebook marketplace I believe.  Had some cool stamping and paintfill pics, looked very professional.  Back of wedges stamped and filled for $20-$30 I think (most sample pics had 8-20 stamps/fills).  He is in Brantford and does it out of his house.

If it's the same guy I heard about him from another WRX'er here and then found his page on Instagram. There are honestly a lot of refinishing guys on IG all over and many do offer paint fill for like $25 plus shipping.
