Tour Championship 2021

One and done - the PGA Tour Season 2020/21 is nearly in the books as the Tour heads back to East Lake for the final event of the season and to decide who takes home an enormous amount of cash. The players head into the week with a spot on the leaderboard, pre-determined by their ranking across the past 12 months which means that Patrick Cantlay starts the week with a two shot lead over Tony Finau. Last year Dustin Johnson entered the week in the position that Cantlay does and outlasted the field to take home $15,000,000.

On its face, does it not seem strange that Rahm starts behind both Finau and DeChambeau?  I know it's a product of the "scoring system" and Finau outlasted the field at the NT......but given Rahm's overall body of work this year, it makes me think there's room for cont'd adjustment in how we award FedEx Cup points.  Thoughts??

This system is not good, the first time someone laps the field but loses by one because they started 10 back it will be a time for reflection

Start everyone off even, find another way

While on my BS pulpit I will say the TC field should include the following

- 36 players vs 30 (the penultimate event should be 72 and not 70)

- plus The Players winner

- plus the winners of the 4 majors

If there's one thing for sure, there's no perfect playoff format.

BTW, the person with the lowest absolute score will win the playoff. However, I think OWGR points are awarded by the relative score ranking, right? (I hope I'm not making this up.)

Xander shot the lowest 4 rounds in relation to par last year but finished second by 3 shots to DJ.

I did a little bit research. So yeah, OWGR does reward points based on 72-hole scores, not the staggered scores. See last year's OWGR point distribution for the Tour Championship. (http://www.owgr.com/en/Events/EventResult.aspx?eventid=7891)

I know the old FedEx Cup points system was kinda confusing during the TC, but I hate this new format especially for a special event like the TC

The old system was more than just "kinda" confusing, it was a mess.

Remember watching the golf, then seeing the leaderboard and who had what score, then the analysts with their charts and scenarios telling you who was actually leading in the FedEx Cup, and why and how many points player A needed to get vs player B and blahblahblah.  It was awful, and the new system gets rid of that.

Also gets rid of two awards ceremonies and two checks at the end.  Really dead simple to follow.

It's taken me a while, but I've come around to thinking it's the best solution, although I still cringe seeing the leaderboard showing someone at -10 when the first group hits their first shots of the tourney.

Technically this atrocity of a tournament is Monahan's fault. He's the one who proposed this format back in 2017.

Also I absolutely hate the point distributions in the playoffs. How TF is Collin Morikawa who won a major and WGC (sof 755) starting lower then Cameron Smith who only won the team event in NOLA.  A major win needs to carry more weight lol. I remember in 2019, 2 of the current major champs didn't even qualify for the Tour Championship.

Leaderboard/Field

- 10: Patrick Cantlay

-8: Tony Finau

-7: Bryson DeChambeau

-6: Jon Rahm

Very true!

But I blame Finchem for what the playoffs have done to the season, PGA Championship, etc.

A few years ago we had a tee time for East Lake that was cancelled at the last minute for some maintenance reason...Oh well...still nice to see it on TV.

As for the scoring format, it just makes it easier to follow instead of trying to explain all of the variables...'If Bryson birdies the last hole and DJ makes bogey, etc.'

Agreed. In all honesty the Fedex Cup is a money garb. I don't think a guy like Spieth who makes more then $20 million a year in endorsements really loses sleep over blowing the Fedex Cup like he would over losing the Open Championship.

Ideally the final 30 players would engage in a match play tournament but it'll never happen because match play doesn't suit TV.

That actually does open tomorrow but not enough here to make it worth the effort IMO.  Game farm I take the little guy to opens up this weekend, so it's just some early season work/tuneup for both of us this weekend and then maybe another visit or two the next 6 weeks or so, getting ready for the wily and wild pheasants of October - January! Nice thing about the game farm is I can shoot my little 28 gauge as well, which doesn't see action on wild birds in the regular season.

That's a shame. I do enjoy pheasants and quail - I generally go out to south central Kansas for that - but doves are where it's at. So small. So fast. Bag limit of 15.

And, I can use my 1oz handicap loads on 'em.

there have been many a year where I have seen more doves at the golf course than out in the fields, getting truer in the city, they have adapted, same goes for the ducks and geese, more geese at the public parks and schools last year than many fields. they aren't stupid , they know they are safe in town

Probably because the tour is going for a more true "playoffs, play well now or go home" type of feel like you get in other major sports. Regular season gets you here and positions you, but that's it. Cam Smith has gone 2 / T34 in the playoffs so far. And Colin played like a 1 seed losing to an 8 seed in the first round going Cut / T63.

Not saying I love this format, I don't, just playing devil's advocate.

I actually like the scoring format for the Tour Championship. However, I think they award too many points (2000 points for the winner) for the first 2 playoff events. 2000 points is more points than winning 3 majors for the season.

The points are figured to make the "seeding", etc. work out, really have nothing to do at all with what points are during regular season.  Just a metric to lead to the intended results.

Agreed......was saying that earlier....I think there needs to be an adjustment to the points.  On its face, it just seems odd that Finau would be so high....and that Morikawa and Rahm would be below him.
