Would DeChambeau have done as well anyway if he hadn't bulked up?

I think BD could assess his arsenal at this point and start to look at how to have a more well rounded game.

His driving and putting are lethal but he needs more dimensions. More shots.

I wish TW would take him under his wing and advise him on how to see a course from the viewpoints of someone who can hit it far and putt, but has finesse and patience as well. And then work on the wedge game with the same obsession that he remade his driving with.

BD added 20 yards to his average drive in two years. Thats unheard of. If he attacks his short game with the same obsession, he could develop a game that’s untouchable.

Yes. And to your point about him adding distance with speed training more so than bulking up. He has clearly slimed down and still hits it just as far.

That was pretty insane for a while. I can imagine he went for his annual physical after gaining like 40 pounds and his doc like,

Bryson? Wtf are you doing?!

Its physics doc.

Shut up and stop eating so much.

imho Bryson bulked up from his rookie season to now on a similar [extreme] curve as brooks from 2012 to present…

One thing to keep in mind is that Bryson did deal with an injury prior to bulking up that caused him to withdraw from at least one tournament.  From what I remember it was a back injury?

Had he not bulked up, would he have been dealing with a bunch of injuries?  Bryson has said that one of the original motivators of getting strong was to avoid injury, but that gets completely lost in most discussions of his transformation.

I think the coolest thing about the Bryson experiment is that provides the results to prove that there is no need to change the equipment or dial back the ball.  Like anyone he can win on any given day but so can any number of shorter hitters. Kevin Na great example this week.

BDC withdrew from 2 PGA Tour events in 2018, 4 weeks apart, due to a shoulder and wrist issue. He then played in events the following weeks after his 2 W/D's. BDC won 4 times on the PGA Tour in calendar 2018. He's won on the PGA Tour 3 times in 3 years since then. He didn't decide to bulk up for nearly 1 1/2 years as he didn't start bulking up until late 2019.

Patrick Cantlay had awful issues with his back that partially caused him to miss 2.5 years on the PGA Tour. He was able to figure out a way to protect his back without gaining 40 pounds and still hits it plenty far. 361 on 18 Sunday past Rahm.

Same as Joseph Bramlett who missed 4+ years of professional golf due to a serious back issue and just won the KFT playoffs today as the number 1 playoff qualifier w/o bulking up. Go figure. BDC is a sideshow on the PGA Tour.

Cantlay's comeback season in 2017 is definitely underrated and underappreciated.

He hasn't looked back since.

I think that Bryson with his talent could play just as well without all the nonsense he surrounds himself with. Regular set of clubs, throw out the pseudo-science and quit the extreme weight- / speedtraining in a pursuit for more distance because with your talent and apparent training ethos you will succeed.

On the other hand, i heard someone say on a recent podcast (forgot which one otherwise i would credit them), that as a player you have to play what suits you as a person. If you a risk averse, don't take unneccesary risk while playing your round because it will get you in trouble. As to Bryson he said, that the whole scientific approach that he's following and sticking to, maybe he just needs that to feel comfortable. Maybe he needs to go all out on the speedtraining, because that's what he needs to keep his focus on his training and maybe that is the way for him to stay focussed. Same for on the course.

So yes, i think he's talented enough, so he should probably be able to play just as well without bulking up, but maybe the bulking up was not even the end-goal, and maybe the distance gain as a result of the bulking up wasn't his end goal either, but was it just a way for him to keep his focus: he needs the process of learning something new (and ideally something different) in order for him to achieve the best result. SO without that process he would probably do a little less good.

It has already been said a few ways.  Bryson has always been a winner.  As a kid, as a Collegiate, as an Am, as a pro.  Any body type, any swing, he was still going to find ways to win.  The added yards have elevated his “A’” game, but probably not helped his “C” game.  That Gap is keeping him from contending to be a number 1 player.  Rahm has a much smaller gap between his A and C games.

Injury prevention and increased strength were the reasons why Bryson bulked up.  Actual physical strength has little to do with ballistic/swinging movements IMO.  Besides proper sequencing, it's about being able to activate your fast twitch fibers as best as you can through speed training and flexibility.  When you swing as hard as he does, it puts a huge strain on your body especially joints and muscles.  As a result, putting on more muscle is necessary.  It's like the linebackers in the NFL who have to bulk in order to endure the countless beatings their bodies take every season.  They also have to stay lean because they need to be fast and explosive.  Did Bryson advance his career by dramatic distance increase overall?  Absolutely.  The weight he's added is the byproduct.

If Bryson had stayed his normal size...

  • He would have made more cuts.
  • He would have won fewer tournaments.
  • GolfWRX would have had 10% fewer posts each Monday.
