Splitting irons with graphite and steel shafts

Played this weekend and had a bit of breakthrough, albeit humbling, realization. I need to put a graphite shaft into at least one, if not two, of my long irons.

 

For those of you who have done this, anything to consider that may not be obvious? For example, it's a good idea to shorten the length from standard on the ones you change to graphite? I'm assuming if you changed more than one iron to graphite you used the same shaft in them (i.e. you didn't pick one shaft for your longest, then another for your second longest)?

 

And any recommendations on good graphite shafts to try?

Sounds more like an issue with shaft weight than it does a problem with the shaft material.   Of course that's assuming the problem isn't swing weight instead.

 

Which also means it's impossible to give a useful recommendation until you know what shaft weight is a good fit for you and those long irons.

Went to see my fitter, was down to vista pros and recoils, went with the recoils in my longer irons.

I've played a few types. Recoils are hard to beat without spending crazy money. Just make sure to go heavy enough. You don't want to go light and have issues feeling the club.

KBS Tour Graphite is as solid as they come.

I used to play all recoils, but got to the point I needed to go back to heavier shafts. Currently play graphite in my wedges bc I dig with them a bit more and it cushions the impact.

I use KBS 90 in my AW, and a lighter Recoil in my SW. My regular iron shafts (went back to steel for 5-pw) are around 105g.

The lighter shafts aren't as big of a deal in the wedges bc the clubheads are heavier and you can still feel what you need to feel.

Don't know if this helps, but I bought a secondhand set of MP4s (4i to PW) with ATTAS 115X graphite shafts in them, at +0.5" over standard Mizuno length. That's a good length and weight for me.

 

I then bought a #4 driving iron, also Mizuno, that had a NSPRO 095GH Neo shaft in it, at standard length. It is about 15~20g lighter than the ATTAS graphites, and I never quite got on with it, and eventually ended up changing the shaft to an ATTAS 115S graphite shaft at 0.5" over Mizuno standard length, and that is working a lot better for me. I think the lack of weight in the NSPRO 095GH shaft was the problem.

 

I guess what I'm saying is that just putting in a lighter shaft might not help you.
