Putting Question

Does your child use a line on their ball for putting? If so, is it all the time, some of the time or in specific situations?

All of the time.  practice rounds. practice putting.  Mirror putting doesn't matter.

I would say anything over 2 ft he lines up using the line as well.

It's going to depend on what he likes. I have some players who are religious with using the line, others simply can't do it.

As a coach, I like to start the player off using the line with a putting mirror to see if they are able to see the line, if they are comfortable with where it is aiming. Many have different dominant eyes and the line on the ball throws them off. You can also use a chalk line if the mirror seems too obstructive. Again, it's a player-specific thing. What's so weird is that many young players simply can't line the ball up correctly, which makes things even more difficult. My younger players, under 13, usually don't have the attention to do the line every time, so we let them have fun and develop at their speed. The line is a HUGE advantage if they can get used to it.

So my son’s prior coach was a big advocate of only using the line inside of six feet or so. Outside that distance he liked the natural athlete to make the stroke focused on speed instead of line.

The whole reason I brought this up was because of Patrick Cantlay this past weekend. He didn’t use the line on his ball for putts outside of five feet and only used it for confidence on shorter putts. If GC shows the final round again you can see him doing this.

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

I've heard both ways of thinking on this one. Some players (Cantlay, Rory, etc.) only use their line for shorter putts, other players use it for all of their putts, and some don't use a line at all.

I don't think there is a correct answer here. Just whatever works for that specific player (your son in this case).

Nah, ding dong over here uses it on all putts in tournaments but rarely if ever when practicing.

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

A line on the ball is only good if it's aimed on the proper line. If it's off then you won't be starting putts on the correct line and you're better off just picking a spot a few feet in front of the ball and trying to roll it over that.
