Azinger tv commentary

Just wanted to say how much I appreciate (since I watch alot of tv golf both men’s and women’s) Paul Azinger’s respectful, insightful and poignant commentary.  It’s not unusual for him to respectfully disagree (without exactly saying so) with Hicks or others when it comes to the difficulty or ease of a particular shot at a particular time.  When a player from 60 yards out from an accessible pin hits it to 15 feet Azinger says- with disappointment in that outcome-“if you’re on the pga tour you’ve got to own that shot”- meaning that shot fell well short and giving the viewers a better sense of the expectations at that level.  When players like last week were shooting the lights out in a 7500 yard challenging course he reminds the viewers that this is a hard course.  He’s demonstrative and shows great passion for the game-and especially the moment as he exhibited during that words can’t describe it playoff between Cantlay and DeChambeau.

I actually do not like him at all as a TV commentator.  To me he is absolutely the worst.

Just look at the way he beat the 14th hole  incident to death more than once.  Then, yesterday, Cantlay comes out and says it was no big deal...

He definitely catches a lot of s***, I think he's alright. Obviously "pressure" is his crutch word, but it seems like he might have been tipped off that Shotgun Start and others make fun of him relentlessly about it. I think he's curbed it slightly.

If your idea of good commentary is that of a vapid and illiterate has-been, then good luck. (Your 8th grade English teacher will be mortified.)

Azinger has some of the worst analogies of any sports announcer.  I would much rather be the rules official for Patrick Reed's group then listen to anything he has to say.

thank you straightshot 7!  I might be in the minority it sounds like but I do.  I've found that once you do or don't like something or someone we're hardwired to find supporting evidence for our initial assessment.  Changing that dynamic is very very difficult.  That's not my opinion, that's social science research by Nobel Prize winner Daniel Kahneman.

Not sure if anyone has noticed.  But those Nobel Prizes are handed out without much thought these days.  Love me some J.D. Power and Associates winners though.

You don't need to watch closer, WRXers hate everything and everybody. Doesn't matter who's in there........they suffer from commentator fixation. Just concentrate on the golf.

Perhaps you haven't noticed, but Joe Buck (who is pretty good BTW) (a) isn't a color commentator but an anchor, a very different role; and (b) doesn't do golf on TV any more since Fox sold their rights to NBC.

the key to being a great golf announcer is talk less. this should be the first rule when hired.

^^^ This is true. In the Ben Wright podcasts (link in the thread about him dying) he mentions that when he started at CBS, Frank Chirkinian told him: "If you can't add anything to the picture that's on the screen, don't say anything". Sound advice, totally ignored these days.
