Should players have the power to have spectators removed from the course?

Does anybody here remember when DL3 had a fan booted for yelling "No Love!" during the WGC Match Play finals?

https://www.espn.com/golf/news/story?id=1747825

Pretty sad that fan conduct has continued to regress from that incident in 2004.

I seriously had no idea Phil didn't like this name. I'd think a name like that is funny if i had that talent and stature 🙂

I think, not sure, that the name FIGJAM was coined early in Phil’s career by his fellow tour pros. So he may be a bit sensitive about it ; )

I just think no fan is entitled to start addressing players obnoxiously one on one while they are out there working.

And especially not following them around doing it repeatedly.

We have discussed that golf is not like most sports with constant noise and jeering being part of the game. And the fans being basically just a few feet from the players.

I don't think anyone has ever been removed from a baseball game for taunting a player. That is literally part of the game.

My buddy got removed at a Red Sox game once back in the day.  He was a Yankee's fan.  We were sitting in the first row of the right field bleachers and he was heckling Dwight Evans the whole game.  While some of the things he was saying were hilarious and had the crowd laughing ("Hey Dewy!  How's the wife AND MY KIDS?!"  Evans had adopted children), the more he kept drinking, the more profane he got.  Finally, security came and escorted him out.  The rest of us stayed, though.  We were Sox fans and wanted to see the end of the game.

Yes, any way that ends in booting the drunk meatheads. I miss the tournaments without fans.

I enjoyed watching those  too.

I absolutely think that the players should be able to boot fans.  It’s easy to stay present. Just shut up.  They taught us that in kindergarten.  We had a tape square on the floor. If you were sitting on the tape your mouth was closed and hands folded on your Lap.   Ever since then I knew when to yell  and when to be quiet.   .    It’s easy !

I could totally see that. But yeah, jawing at a player is part of the game. I think there is a line, especially in public, but calling somebody Brooksie seems like a pretty minor offense. Now if they are using blow horns in his backswing, then sure. But "don't call him someone else" seems like something you could let slide.

I know how much sh!t we talk on the course. He wouldn't last 3 holes with my group. Hell, he couldn't handle folks walking. 🤣

I have a feeling you need to do something pretty egregious to get kicked out of an NBA game. ie run onto the floor, throw something, excessive profanity. I’ve been court side (sitting on the court a couple feet from the players no barrier) for a few games and FIGJAM or calling a player by another players nickname would maybe get a laugh. But as   @bscinstnct pointed out. It’s apples to oranges. But I’m sticking by what I said earlier and got crap for. The more the tour pushes the PIP/social media stuff, the worse it’s gonna get. Isn’t the lame PIP fueled feud between Bryson and Brooks what started this??? At least Patrick Cantlay agrees w/me. Haha

IMO, playing golf is not like football or baseball. More like billiards. I was on the 17th hole at Brookline during the 1999 Ryder Cup and before Leonard made "the putt" a fan had yelled in the middle of  Olazabal's back swing on his approach shot that came up short.  That fan should have been tossed but the whole crowd that day was a drunken zoo and the marshals were over 80 years old and overwhelmed.  I think the fan that yelled in the back swing of Bryson's missed 12' putt at the BMW should be tossed. There has to be a line.

Absolutely. Yelling during or right before a swing should be a dismissal, or at very least a warning. Saying Brooksy as he walks by on the way to his ball… I say deal with it Bryson.

Based on your posting history in this thread you do not seem to have a problem with it … why don’t you take a stab at it and let us know why you think it is okay?

The athletes are not nearly as weak as the hecklers, who appear to be so insignificant and impotent that idiotic attempts to get attention seem ok to them.  How an athlete reacts to this stupidity does not even compare to the stupidity of these fans.  Who are these people?

There is a lot of support for players having the right to have spectators removed.

Should this mean a player could have someone removed just because they didn't like them?

No. Let’s say you’re eating dinner.

And some dope walks over to your table and forks one of your roasted potatoes.

You call over the waiter and say,

Hey, this guy just ate one my potatoes. Get him out of here before I stab him with this butter knife 🤣

Clearly, a violation and the guy gets booted

But, if there’s a guy who stinks of patchouli seated near you…it’s annoying but unfortunately, you’re out of luck ; )

Is like that.

Absolutely they should have that power.  Obnoxious people should not be tolerated by society.  Golf isn't the NFL where some random guy is yelling from the 53rd row in a sea of 50k other people.  It is a sport where spectators are allowed access and are in an environment like few other sports provide.  Act like it.

What do you mean?

A drunk fan yells, “you suck rory, go home and count your money”🤣

Rory doesn’t summon security?

How does it get reported?

If someone does that hole after hole after hole after hole, sure they get tossed, but not for isolated jeers. Maybe I should have included that venues need to have meaningful standards of conduct in the face of this. They can train staff and security to identify behavior that crosses a line they want to establish (think how Augusta & Phoenix enforce different standards), and that also includes telling the player they may have to suck it up.

This really shouldn't be a problem, as we see places like Augusta handle crowd behavior just fine. Seriously though, I can't recall any player being targeted for harassment like this. It's one thing to be obnoxious, but I think this goes beyond that.

Having never attended the Masters, I have a question-

Has anyone witnessed someone being ejected there?  Is that a common occurrence?

Do people behave because of that particular venues'  "history and tradition" and the the difficulty of getting a ticket?

Sure it’s rare-ish.   But like I just posted google fan banned and see the number of hits you’ll get. It would be rare in golf as well.  But eventually the drunk idiot crowd might learn.  But then again some would view it as a drunken badge of honor to get booted.

Its so rare in baseball to get chucked for heckling......... now there is a difference between heckling and yelling things so rude the fans want you chucked too, buts thats rare and I've never seen it at any game I've been to

As a kid in the 70s one of my best memories at an Angel game was against the Yankees and Reggie Jackson was up and the guys next to us were yelling "Reggie your Grandma wears Army boots!"  we were dying laughing and said that cut to all my friends and still do lol.... incidentally my brother and I had the TV cameras on us that game jamming popcorn into our faces and our friends saw it

For fighting? Sure. For yelling at a player? No. Unless you are being offensive in front of kids, maybe.

But for saying "good job, Brooksie"? 🤣

<edit> play a round of golf with Charles Barkley then tell the Marshall he hurt your feelings afterwards. If he can't handle being called someone else's awful nickname, then maybe he needs to consider a less public line of work

Some are just talking shiz.

I’ll bite. Why do I think it’s ok for someone to say Brooksy to Bryson as long as he’s not about to hit a shot or in the process of a swing? Because he has essentially done this to himself. All the internet nonsense and feuding with Brooks. He was all about it and a full willing participant. As Cantlay so thoughtfully stated. You want to live by the sword, be prepared to die by the sword. You want to run and cry to the commish??? Ok fine; but at the same time take a look in the mirror buddy.

So what makes someone want to say Brooksy to Bryson??? Perhaps they  have been following the ridiculous feud he chose to be in with Brooks, (probably don’t like some of his other “antics”) think he’s a total d bag and want to give him some crap 🤷🏼‍♂️

I’d say the fact that a ton of Masters patrons are long time badge holders and respect the event has a lot to do with it. Also, the Masters takes enforcement seriously, very seriously.

When I was there in ‘16 along the rope left side of hole 16 watching them skip balls across the pond, a quiet voice in my ear scared the crap out of me.  A law enforcement officer very politely asked me to move my small camera bag back. It was on the ground and was breaking the imaginary plane down from the rope to the ground by less than a foot.

In general, I think people feel lucky to be there and the whole place commands respect but they’ve been consistent in keeping things under control for decades.

Lol, I honestly don’t remember how this “feud” started.

Is it his fault any more so than BK as far as how it started and has been ongoing.

Whatever it is, a fan who decides to address a tour pro individually and taunt them is a coward. And worse, a nuisance to all the fans who want to see golf and not listen to a clown. If they want attention they should just go make videos of themselves doing “jack@ss” stunts and post them 🤣

First….do we know BD went to the tour or were they just sick of it on their own.

Second….do you really think it is just fans politely calling him Brooksie as if they got the name wrong? Lol. Last week there were many instances where fans are yelling at inopportune times during his swings.  They deserve the boot no matter what they said.

As far as I am concerned most of the blame goes to BK.  He egged them on with the free beer bs.

Absolutely. Anything during a swing/just before is gonna get you a warning or booted. All good on that. And If Bryson’s fans were doing it to Brooks I’d say the same. They are both culpable IMO. And now the tour has to put out the fire they started with the ridiculous PIP. So perhaps they can look in the mirror as well. Again, we all have our opinions and I think we all know where one another stands. I don’t know about you, but I’m over talking about it. If you carry on, I’ll call the commish! 😂

So, to extrapolate, in order to enforce the new non-heckling policy the tour should reduce the numbers of spectators, and have a commanding police/security presence.

Or maybe just sell cheap pimento sandwiches.

My mother was right.  All the evils of the world can be fixed by a draconian police-state and affordable cheese.

Or just relate it to puppy training - be consistent - some say every command you allow to go without getting it right is 20 times you have to do it over.

The folks at Augusta National are consistent!

You have a point - we gushed over how cheap the food was, doesn't take much to make us happy I guess, but something about just walking into the place is a whole different vibe than the carnival atmosphere I've experienced at a Ryder Cup and a PGA Championship with tents, etc.  I was overwhelmed, but that's me.

PGA Tour has let the barking dogs go for so long, it will take a lot to reel it in - if it is really serious about it and not just paying lip service and protecting certain players.

I still struggle to understand why a grown adult thinks it is okay to yell at someone. I see what you gave as a reason … but just because they don’t like him or that he brought it on himself doesn’t seem to be enough justification. Everyone should have learned how to behave in kindergarten … if I knew one of my peers/friends/colleagues/employees engaged in that type of behavior it would certainly make me rethink my relationship.

I'm not the biggest Bryson fan, and certainly not the biggest Brooks fan either. That type of behavior is fine in football, but golf is different. We should expect more of our players and fans.

No, of course not, but as previously  indicated players should be able to request such; and if they do, I would recommend doing so in a discretionary manner. When one is removed let it be done quietly as possible and with a high level of respect for and to the offending party (for such becomes even more important when met with resistance due to alcohol or you-know-who-I-am-ism). Too obvious and ham-fisted t** for tat removals may actually create more titting and tatting, exposing us all to more t**** and tats. And if I go home talkin' about t****, nevermind tats, on the course, my wife ain't gonna let me go back.

Let’s keep it real. A big reason it gets out of hand is 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺 Seems a lot of people when at an entertainment event, just don’t grasp the concept of responsible drinking.
