Oversize grip question

Recommended Posts

For the last 2 years I've been using oversize grips. My hands do not require them though, they are not oversize or anything like that, I just like the feel of the oversize, thee oversize grips tend to fill my hands up and in return it makes me not have the feeling of choking the heck out of the club.

So my question is, could an oversize grip when not needed, make for a little fade?

Take all the variables out like, stance, swing, etc.

Or is my grip just a little loose? And I would need to go back to a standard.

It's just a little fade that's annoying, its not bad, its just not pleasing to me.

Any thoughts, info, replies are appreciated. Thanks.

I should say, the oversize I've been using are winn wraps. I recently bought pxg irons and ordered them with oversize and they seem to be a little bigger than an oversize winn. imo.

In theory/general - yes much larger grip tends to promote the right side for rh golfers - as squaring the face tends to lag

After trying jumbomax grips - I tend to agree, especially on irons

what grips did pxg put on your irons?  golf pride oversize?

which winn wraps were you using before?

diameters/taper/rate of taper/texture/weight differences etc can all factor in different "feels"

Short answer - yes, the bigger the grip (especially when not "necessary"), the less hand action.

There is actually no proven correlation between grip size and the ball flight tendencies - it's largely just a bunch of old wives tales and myths that have been handed down and perpetuated.   There have been a few studies, but none of them were really well planed or only used very small sample sizes so the results have been contradictory and inconclusive.

The only thing we know for sure is that it's very individualized.  Anything can happen and the only way to figure out what is by actual testing.

Of course testing different grip sizes w/o normalizing the grip weight doesn't really pin down the true source of the change - is it really the grip size?  the weight? or the change in balance?   or any combination of those.

In regards to Oversized-I agree whole heartily on this as well....During my initial jumbomax research - I found that statement of the "rights" prevailed in a lot of discussions. I found it to be true in hybrids/irons only...as I could release the driver very easily with jumbomax [even in XL]. I actually play Sonar+ Oversize on my driver

It's just something each individual will feel differently.....and react to the Mechanix differently. I really struggled turning over any thing off the turf with Jumbomax.....but I could hit cuts/fade/slice all day

Answering a couple things here, I went and checked as I still have winn excel wraps (oversize) still on my woods.

The winn's are more parallel and as in same diameter from end to end.

The pxg Z5 oversize are tapered and by the looks the butt end is wider in diameter.

So I think that's where my answer is in regards to feeling something is off a little with my irons.

As it is, I'm going to purchase 13 winn dri tac wraps in standard size as of now...

if you want the same "feel" as your Winn Excel grips then you should put on the Winn DriTac wrap OVERSIZE (not standard) to approximate the same weight and overall diameter size and taper as your Excels..unfortunately that size is BACKORDERED everywhere!

one selling point with the Winn DriTac wraps is that all 3 sizes (std, midsize and oversize) all weigh approx the same 50g +/- 1g so you can try all 3 sizes and they will keep the same swingweight

that being said your Lamkin Z5 oversize on your irons now weigh about 76g so when you put on a 50g replacement winn  grip your irons will increase SW by about 3 points...that may or may not solve your issue but at least you have the benefit of trial

I had looked on pxg website and never found specs of the grip, had I know that I probably wouldn't have gone the oversize direction due to weight and would've lost out on diameter I get that but.. great info thank you.
