I’ll never understand how a guy who hits the ball 280+ off the tee shoots anything worse than 4 or 5 over.

I've generally hit the longer clubs long and my short irons short and not always so straight. Throw in poor chipping and a few 3 putts with a couple of OB tee shots and its easy to shoot in the mid 80's and still hit multiple 280 yard drives.

"Shirtsleeve" swing technique:

1. Setup: Elbows bent forearms pressed together against shaft slightly forward of center with "Hogan" "active/flexed" leg tension left foot turned out slightly and the right leg slightly farther to the right - weight mostly on balls of feet butt of left hands sits on the top of the grip with very light grip.

2. Swing - W/o disturbing weight distribution of legs and feet lower hands while doing a forward press "swing trigger" then the left upper arm takes over on the backswing, it needs to go out in front of the body then back in front of the chest as the hands trace down initially then up to over the right shoulder "Torres". The goal is to not disturb the pressure of the feet during the initial takeaway.

Notes:

1. Only swing thought after swing trigger - extend left arm at shirt sleeve when reaching left hand over right shoulder "Shirtsleeve technique".

2. The upper left arm move "Shirtsleeve technique" can be practiced independently without a club, sitting down for instance

3. The correct feet tension can be felt by doing very short hops on the balls of the feet then holding the same feeling of pressure on the front of the feet and then taking three practice swings with the grip very loose in order to not disturb the same pressure on the feet and on the 3rd swing actively do the "Shirtsleeve" move. From there the swing should be done within a matter of seconds to not lose the feel of the legs resisting, this way this is not a learned technique as much as it is a setup technique.

I'll never understand how someone can't understand that someone who hits the ball 280+ can quite easily have an average score double that.  🙂

I mean, it really doesn't take much, especially if you aren't a good putter.

I have a buddy who drove a green 310 yd  green once to make an eagle yet on the next hole duffs his drive 15 yds.  Not Referring to guys like him.

im talking about the guy who hits drives consistently 280+ and IN Play for the most part.  I can putt with the worst of them but only 3 putt once maybe twice a round and according to shot scope that is the worst part of my game. I play to around 7-8 worse than a 0 cap and about as good as a 25 cap in putting.

i only drive the ball 200-240. If I hit it 40 yds further than means less club in. Which means closer to the pin which means easier putting.

With great swing speed comes great responsibility. Think of the trigonometry of hitting a ball 12 degrees offline for example. If it carries 210 you're in the first cut, if it carries 310 you're completely off the course.

I drew up an art piece of what the same exact swing looks like with the only difference being speed

Posted with apologies for the pseudo-humble-brag...

One year during my so-called prime years, I kept stats on driving distance, in response to a friend's idea.  My average distance (with driver) over three months was 285.x yards, verified with laser, GPS, and even Google Earth.  The fact that I played this course a lot didn't hurt when it came to measuring.

During this season, my average score was 80.x.  I closed the season with a six week stretch where I averaged 78, dropping my index to 5.6.  Course is par 71, 6500 yds from back tees.

How could I score like that, in spite of a load of wedge and short iron approach shots?  Answer:  I have directional issues with shorter clubs in my hands.  It's been an issue as long as I've played the game.  Blocks, pulls, unintended fades and draws, all sorts of fun.  Forced to rely on short game to score because of this.

One former golf forumite described me as someone who was more accurate with a long iron than a short iron.  I have to say he was probably right.  (I practiced more with long irons than short, when learning the game)

You wondered how it could happen.  The above is one recipe.  <shrug>

58 yrs old and my swing speed is going down as I age.  Recently just got below 105MPH so I switched from the Bridgestone Tour XS and now trying out the RX and RXS balls.  I really like them both.  I was a ProV guy for a long time and I will still buy a dozen once in awhile, but I really like what Bridgestone is offering.  Played Chrome Soft for awhile (when they came out) but they got to the point that I thought they were actually too soft.  I'll hit a TP5 once in awhile too.  Good golf ball.
HCP is around a 6
102-105 SS

0-1 handicap, ~115 swing speed. Played ProV1x growing up before Titleist pulled the switcheroo and made ProV1 the lower spinning, lower launching ball. New ProV1 ticks all the boxes for me - lower spin and launch which I need, with softer feel vs old ProV1x. Experimented with AVX, but wasn't the right fit for me. Too hot off the irons, airmailing greens and couldn't control yardages.

Trying to get my hands on some ProV1 left dot if anyone is selling 😄

Play Bridgestone Tour BX (for me, best ball I’ve ever played)

Vice Pro in the winter months.

I’ve tried almost every ball, and for me the swing speed recommendations don’t work. I’m shorter with all clubs, and lose spin I want when i play with a lower compression golf ball.

Handicap 17.2

Preferred ball is the Cut Blue, but also will use Hammer Control and Noodle easy straight, or nearly any found ball. I've been trying the hammer control more lately and it's growing on me a little bit.

Last time I was measured 105-110 driver swing speed.

Prefer a softer ball so fluctuate between the Bridgestone Tour B RXS, Titleist AVX or Callaway Chrome soft

My preferred ball is the 2021 TP5x, but alternate with the Left Dash ProV1x.  Always have preferred a higher compression ball to control spin on driver and not zip back short iron/wedge shots.

I switch between 3 balls

1. Snell Black ( just recently went to them this year and love this ball)

2. Srixon Z-Star (play them when the buy 2 get 1 free deal is around)

3. Bridgestone RX ( this is the ball I was playing before switching to the Snell Black)

All 3 balls are great

I tested several models out over the course of last year and ended up in the Snell Black

OnCore, Chrome Soft, ProV1, Vice, TP5, Z-Star, XV, RX, and I am sure some other ones I cant remember right now.

I did not hit the Maxfli Tour, so I might give them a go when I run out of Z-Stars.

Heard good things about the Maxfli
