New Netflix docu-series on PGA Tour

Golf fans in 1982 with nothing but crappy tv reception of a few hours of events and no other media coverage. And if you miss it live, you’re out of luck and see 15 seconds of highlights on the evening news.

Golf isn’t a very big market. More people go bowling than play golf. I think it will be nothing more than a PGA Tour promo with some controversy mixed in. People magazine for golf.

 

When professional golfers travel internationally, they are issued “Entertainer” visas. Golf is entertainment, like GolfWRX… 😉

Plus, the fact that around 1982 a 25" TV was considered a BIG screen..........2022 we're watching sports on a 65-70" HD multi-speaker Movie theater. Just like being there, from the comforts of our living room...........

Again, this is just my opinion. I think there are interest from everybody (Netflix, Tour, sponsors) to make this a recurring show like Drive to Survive (in its 4th season). Before COVID, golf has a declining participation issue. Golf is gonna enjoy a nice COVID bump for couple of years, but golf still needs to face the reality that is 1) too expensive to play; 2) too long to play; 3) too inaccessible. It is probably an interest for the Tour to get something long-term going. 

 

To be honest, if the Tour does not work out, Netflix should go straight to LPGA that is probably more willing to work something out. 

 

There isn't a lot of legitimate beefs on Tour.  I wouldn't say that it's a Mutual Admiration Society either, but I tend to think that the devoted fans think that Tour players dislike each other more than they do or that there's a lot of secret prima donnas that the Tour's public relations keeps under wraps.  

 

And it's really nothing like that.

 

Part of the reason why there are very little in the way of beefs and general dislike between players is that they all have different schedules and rarely interact all that much with each other.  The real interaction is between the player and his 'team' of the caddie, swing coach, trainer, business manager, etc.  The players rarely pair up with each other more than twice a season and then you have players playing in different events or starting the first round in the morning vs. the other in the afternoon.  They may not even come across each other on the golf course in the same event.

 

The real story is about the player's own individual story and I think that gets overlooked by production companies looking to film the Tour.  That and the weekly grind of Tour life and being on the road for half the year.

I think the real question is going to be - how interested are hard core golf fans going to be in watching something where they knew the results 6-9 months ago? In...January, are you going to really want to dig into an episode about last years US Open? Are you going to want to see the "inside scoop" on someone changing club manufacturers that you knew half a season ago?

 

Which leads me to believe that hard core golf fans arent the real audience here. Its random people who logon to Netflix and see the big splashy advertisement for the show but theyve never watched golf in their life. Thats the real audience.

Look I've gotten into a million shows on Netflix that I never would have expected to like, so, I give them the benefit of the doubt. I dont believe for a second the Tour will allow us to see the "inside scoop" we all want to see but I'd be thrilled to admit I was wrong.

Don't think hard core golf fans are the target audience like you say. The PGA is trying to replicate what Drive to survive did for F1 with the casual fan. For those of us that were hardcore F1 fans, DTS didn't offer much in terms, but it sure got the rest. My kids who always used to laugh at me watching F1 races, are now glued to the screen. Colleagues are now discussing F1 at work, where this was unheard of before DTS.

 

On the flip side, the sudden success leads to the crap that happened at the last race...(and I was actually rooting for Max and Honda to win it all as I've been a fan of Honda since the MP4/4 car).

Agree100%......some of the worst movies and show are now trending on NetFlix,,,,,,,I'm as guilty as you are as far as sampling content that I would never watch normally......LOL!

Funny you mention that. I got hooked on F1 watching DTS. Now I don’t miss a race ever.

Me too, the wife actually started watching it first and I got totally sucked in. I used to watch it in the 80's.

 

I'm a little interested in some background, but I also don't watch golf. Funny Bryson feels it would be too invasive (he wouldn't control the narrative)?

There you go. My young adult daughter likes DTS too and she previously couldn't care less about racing. 

 

If these shows move the needle with the female audience it can broaden the viewership immediately and meaningfully.

To be honest, my wife loves watching golf and has gone to watch in person (I have not). I agree that this will expand viewers and enthusiasm for at least watching more.

Except when it’s completely fabricated. Lando and Sainz were never at odds at McLaren…. But DTS is an entertainment product, not a documentary.

1000% this.  I didn't care for DTS, and I've watched F1 for 35 years, waking up at 4am to walk to my friends house who had cable tv.  I have multiple co-workers who only started watching F1 because of DTS.  They are big into F1 now, with our water cooler Monday morning chats about the races, or downforce levels between the Red Bulls and Mercedes cars.  DTS has massively broadened the F1 audience around the world.

 

I also agree with the last race of the year being effected by this success.  I dislike Max, so I was pretty salty about the finish.  It's pretty obvious the entertainment portion of F1 trumped the actual racing/rules a few times in 2021.  But, they have shown they can and will pull the reigns back on some of that, based on 2022 races this year.  Getting rid of Masi, defining track limits, clarifying restart procedures etc.
