Backyard mat and net?

Recommended Posts

I know a million people probably have a backyard setup. But this is my first time. Mat and net were delivered today.

I literally just laid the mat down and net and measured 8-9’ of distance.  This corner of my yard is under construction. About to fill that lower area with rock etc. but this is really only place I have for my golf area.

my main questions are…

1. What should I build a foundation out of for the mat? It obviously isn’t very sturdy laying directly on grass. I’m thinking just some 2x4s with plywood on top?

2. What’s the best way to build and level the foundation? Assuming I make out of wood…

3. Is 8-9’ from ball to net sufficient? I plan to buy a mevo plus once this is all setup.

Plenty of people use their mat on grass myself included. Unless your lawn is very lumpy, and your mat flaps upon striking it, you should be fine if your mat has some decent weight to it. If the mat is permanently placed there, just smooth the ground there.

(I will be getting the Mevo+ as well if the Bushnell Launch Pro doesn’t work out. So the below comments are from the instruction manual and/or testimonials.)

With the Mevo+, the “lowest” setting of indoor, 8-9’ is fine to the net. You do need the same behind the ball to the unit.

Lastly, you will still get better readings with the sticker on the ball.

I have this exact question and very similar mat/net. Few questions for you:

1. What did you end up doing? Did you build some sort of mat foundation?

2. Do you leave the mat outside?

3. What mat do you have?

4. Any suggestions/advice on building a more permanent solution?

i did end up building a foundation. Super easy with a little wood and sand. Got it level and I leave it outside. It works. Don’t remember the model of the mat. But was something I bought off eBay. Was supposed to be similar to country club elite and soft and feel real. I like it hitting off it. But it’s almost a little too soft and squishy standing on it.  I wish the half I stood on was more firm but side I hit off was exactly the same. Company told me to add sand into the mat to firm it up and would firm up over time. But I haven’t really messed with it much.

hinestly I haven’t been using this nearly as much as I thought and funny I literally just yesterday was telling myself I need to make it a ritual to hit balls every day.  I want to get a spotlight and a standup mirror I can use while out there for feedback. And now that it gets dark so early. By time kids are down and I have time to use it. It’s dark. And cold. So maybe a big heater too haha.

I actually called a company out during summer to put down putting green turf in all the surrounding areas around it. Since I’m under a big tree grass doesn’t grow there. And it’s not the ideal shape for a putting green. But there would be a few spots I could putt 5-12 footers.  But I just never did it yet. But something I’d like to do.

Sounds like you need to build yourself a nice shelter.  Lights, heater, Screen, bar, couches... you know.  Just the basics, nothing fancy.
