Tell us the tale of the worst golf shot you've ever seen in person

I hit a line drive tee shot shattering the 3rd story window of a house at least 50 yards right of the fairway. I could tell no one has ever hit this house before when I went over there looking for my ball and the elderly couple came outside to see what happened and exclaimed they thought someone shot a gun at their house. I exchanged my number in case their insurance policy declined to front the bill but never heard from them.

I've told this story before, but here goes anyway...

20 years ago I'm playing with my buddy and his 11 yo son. I was a bit of a hothead back then and my buddy used to love laughing at me for taking it so seriously.

On this occasion I'm playing terrible golf and getting steadily more heated. We tee off on the 10th and Lee, the son, spanks one down the middle. I think I've figured out what I've been doing wrong, so I tee it up and proceed to push cut a 3 iron into the deep rough of the adjacent hole.

I'm just about keeping it together as I get to my ball. It's a busy part of the course with tees and greens all around me and I'm feeling deeply embarrassed to be there.

My lie isn't that bad, but the ball is perched up a bit, so think I'll take advantage with a hero 5 iron over the trees to the tight green.

I steady myself and put a great swing on it... if the ball had been on the turf. The club went right under the ball taking a perfect divot and leaving the ball settled nicely in said divot.

I lost my shiz. It was the last straw. I am not proud to admit that I launched my five iron at the nearest silver birch tree that was 20 yards away.

The thing about those silver birches is that they're very springy, and they don't like being attacked. The club hit the trunk right in the balance point of the shaft and came straight back at me. The head hit me right in my gentleman's package.

I hit the floor like a man who just been hit in the nuts by a dangerous missile, and everyone who saw it burst into laughter.

Once I'd picked myself up from the floor and checked that the damage wasn't too bad (to my club and nuts), I laughed too. It broke my mood and I vowed never to take golf so seriously again.

...you know the one...The first-tee shank that hits a board member seated on the patio at the club. The bladed wedge that buzzes the green then rockets through the window of a course-side home. We want to hear the full story of the worst golf shot you've seen in person. The best answers will be featured in a front page article.

Funny enough the example you gave is the one I would suggest was the worse I have seen.

Playing with my brother in law (BIL). He is not a great golfer but enjoys the game. We get a tee time just before noon at a nice course and role up to discover they are having the provincial(state) ammeter tournament there and first round tees off just after us.

The scene was about 150 of the top golfer in the area gathered for a pre-round briefing just off the first tee. So when we go to tee off they stop the briefing and everyone goes quiet to watch us hit. I had played a few events before, so though I was nervous I have tee'd off with an audience before and knew how to deal with it. I stepped up and I thought, just make a smooth swing. I crushed my shot with a draw down the middle which elicited applause from the crowd. I was relieved and it was fun to put on a good show. My BIL steps up super nervous and completely misses the ball with his first attempt. Silence. So he put away the driver and gabs an iron. On his second attempt he shanks the ball onto the club house roof and it rolls down off the roof and lands in pitcher of beer on the patio with a bag splash. The guys enjoying the beer luckily thought it was funny. The crowd behind - all high level golfers - maintained complete silence to be polite. That made it worse.

I then suggested to my BIL maybe he wanted to just drop one by me in the fairway. He was thankful to take me up on this offer and get the heck out of there.

Spring of 1989 in Omaha, Nebraska.  This was my last semester in college and I was playing on the golf team (#10 player on a 10 man team).  I was about to start my first round of the two day tournament and was following the #1 players for the top 3 ranked schools.  Our first team was one of the top ranked teams.  Our #1 and the #1 of another team striped their drives down the fairway and the third player in this grouping was teeing off.  He ends up hitting his drive at the apex of the crown of his driver and the ball shoots dead right, over the fence and bangs against the side of an apartment building about 30-40 yards right of the first tee.  He's hitting 3 off the tee and I have to follow this shot.  This was not what I wanted to see being that this was my first big college tournament and there were around 40 people watching on the tee (coaches, next group teeing off, and people watching the tournament).  I was so nervous my hands were shaking a wee bit.  I started to think positive things to calm myself down (don't hit the ball OB, don't top it, don't chunk it, don't pull it and kill someone, don't look like a fool).  Definitely encouraging thoughts going through my head.  😂  I ended up striping a ball down the center of the fairway leaving about 100 yards to the hole.  I hit a sand wedge to 1 foot and made birdie.  So obviously the pep talk helped.  😉  Still to this day the #1 who hit the ball nearly straight right on the tee was probably the worst shot I have ever seen off the first tee.

There have been plenty of "worst" in my history, but last Friday was the most recent.  It's been raining so the fairways were soggy. I'm in a match play situation. Long par 5 with my five wood in hand for second shot.  Feet are slightly sinking in soft grass. Thinking "better not hit this fat". Swing-hit-look for ball... I hit down on it and drove it 2" straight down into the fairway where I was standing. Now it's an unplayable lie. Buddies are laughing at me.  Took a 7.  Thankfully it was just loss of hole.

This would have been (guessing here) around 1965. My best friend and both our fathers were playing golf at a local 9 hole muni. There was a group of ladies in front of us (most unusual in that area in that timeframe) and they were pretty slow (I think that 2 of them were learning the game from the other two). They let us through on the tee of the 4th hole (par 4). My friend's Dad caught a driver (back in the persimmon days) on the very top of the clubhead. The ball went literally straight up in the air with tons of backspin. It ended up about 15 yards behind us in a bush. He was somewhat embarrassed.

My wifes cousin is playing with us and we are hitting approach shots on a par 5. Real smack talker her cousin. He is about 70 yards out or so and says "Bet I can get it closer than that, watch me." He proceeds to hit a laser beam with his wedge at least 150 yards straight over the green, through the trees, and we hear a loud thud from hitting the roof of a very nice house. We all just hit the ground in laughter as he just trudges over to the next hole.

#1 terrible shot that I've seen was made by ME!

Early 2000's local qualifier for the US Public Links AM.... 18th hole. Long uphill par 4 with the 2-story clubhouse right behind the 18th green. Probably 150+ spectators, members, organizers and competitors all right near 18 green. We were one of the last 3 to 4 groups in that day, so alot of people were hanging out waiting for the scores to come in.

I'm in the middle of the fairway, about 185 yards out and was hitting last in my group. I proceed to nuke a 5i with a tight little draw over the green and it hits the 2nd story of the club house and bounces on the first floor roof and then bounces out into the parking lot adjacent to the clubhouse, makes one huge bounce off the pavement and lands squarely on the hood of a new red Corvette. The Corvette had one of those annoying alarm systems that are insanely loud and can be heard from a mile away and the ball sets that puppy off. The crowd at the green starts howling laughing (it was a roar). My caddy (best friend) looks at me and tosses me a ball and says "nice shot jack AZZ!" and the other players and caddies in our group start howling laughing at me as well.

In my moment of confusion and dismay, I take my new ball and walk up the fairway about 75 yards to get a better look at the "situation". I didn't see any OB markers near the parking lot, and there was a marshall standing right there (still laughing). I scream at him asking "is that OB??!!!".... he and the entire crowd yells back "YES!!!!" in unison and start laughing harder. It was a long walk back to my divot to replay the shot... that's all I can say.

I was surrounded by people laughing at me and my shot, but mostly at ME... most humiliating situation I've even been in and was the worst shot I've ever seen, given the circumstances.
