Dynamic Gold X100 to Dynamic Gold 120 X100 Shafts

Hi all,

I am starting the fitting process for a new set of irons (retiring my MP5's and probably going Srixon ZX7). I currently play X100's at 1inch over (over Mizuno spec so 7 iron at 37.75", swing a 7iron at about 90mph so PGA Tour average). In the new irons I will be going 0.25" shorter so 37.50".

I have generally been very happy with how solid the X100 is and launch and spin windows work for me. But have been wanting to look at going slightly lighter and was thinking of the Dynamic Gold 120 X100 Shafts.

Questions:

- Anyone made a similar switch? What was your experience?

- Did you gain / lose speed or consistency?

- Was the lighter shaft easy to adapt to? Would more than 10g be a bridge too far?

- What wedge shaft did you pair it with if you also changed out your wedges. I am not a far of the "spinner shafts" so would play a X100 / S400/300 combo. Would you supplement with the Dynamic Gold 120 S300 (118g vs 120g in the iron) or other suggestion?

I am testing, but shaft availability to test in South Africa is largely lacking so doubt I could accurately test many options.

Hi - I  just made this switch from TI x100 in a Wilson Staff Blade to 120 x100 in new level PF-1. ..and it was by accident! (I ordered some NEW Level PF-1 irons.. by accident I choose DG 120 X100.  I tried to change the order, but they had already built and shipped the clubs....totally my fault).

Anyway... stuck with this lighter shaft...I was worried about balance and swing weight, etc but after hitting them more than a few times, the 120 X100 play just like my x100  So...I'm happy - lighter is better. And...from a flex standpoint , no real difference - still stable with feel. There is a little slightly more spring to the shaft..but that has to be perceived or just the less 10 grams of the  the weight of the TI and/or the fact that I had the TI as 1/2 short.   IF you have an aggressive tempo...maybe you'll fee something different, who knows. But for the most part..only the 120x100 can get you close the the x100 feel you like but lighter. ...why?....

here's why ...  most important...balance. There is none to little change of balance point. DG got these shafts right....they are like Std DG! . So...bottom line....you'll make the adjustment just fine, you should not have any swing timing issues. You may go down a swing weight but....from a balance point perspective...that will be a moot point. It may not matter...again, one range session and you are done.  If you are going .25 short....no worries.  Not sure of the head weight in your MP5 vs Zx7. so that's a factor you should consider.

FYI - I have std x100 (not tour issues ) in some old mizzuno mp63...my new sticks feel the same the std 120 X100 from new level (. The TI feel slightly stiffer. Not sure if you have TI or not..but there you have it.)

Finally...And yes, the new levels are are amazing, total quality build, all around. - every club was same swing weight, check out the TXG review of New level PF-1 and PF2. If you like off-set...like the zx7 has...check out the PF-2 ...save some money and get a blade very similar in size to the zx7. You will not be disappointed. New Level may be running their 200 Dollars off. That would be half-price of zx7 I think.

Oh...Regarding wedges...don't sweat it..I kept my TI  X100 in my 50 zipcores , and TI s400 in my 54 RTX 4, , and DG spinner in my zipcore 56. No need to change wedge shafts. If you do...go DG 120 S...just play the wedge you have or want.  Hope this helps. And check out new level...I just learned of them and can't believe the quality and look at address...they are prefect.

Hope this helps.

Really wanted to love the dg120 x100. I tried these at the store the other day to compare to my TI X100, and while the swing weight change was welcome, it felt a touch harsher than I would have liked.

Same here. DG120 X100 feels horrible to me personally. TI X100 is nice and reliable. Not sure why but 120 version feels stiffer and timing doesn't seem to be the same as TI X100. It's not the weight for sure because I can play Modus 120X or KBS $ Taper S flex very well. Just the DG120 seems to be a different beast for some reason.

Sounds like I need to suck it up, do some curls and stick with my normal X100s… super reliable and used to the feel.

The dg 120 s300 are the same. Lighter and slightly harsher feeling. Not terrible, but noticeable. I play both regular s300 and 120 s300 in various sets. The regular s300 feel better, but the 120s work fine.

VAN..and ewald...

yes..try them as there's really not much fact into my opinion or anyone else   -  Only your swing and feels are the truth, your opinion is what matters - not ours.  I say because I just don't feel any harshness, whatsoever. ..  "Horrible" never entered my mind but I admit It could be horrible and harsh to someone else.

Bottom line opinion- the 120 x100 IS a lighter DG x100...so if anyone is after a "lighter x100"...then...I say ...there you have it. The profile and balance have been designed, measured , tested and played. I think they got it right,

Modus 120x - sure, awesome shaft, ok ...but..totally I think that's a totally different different profile and balance point. (modus are great shafts....no denying that...but I went back to DG. )

I can't speak the 105 in DG or Modus....but again...I think those are apples to oranges relative to someone looking for a lighter X100"

cheers

Stiffness typically follows weight. DG120 will naturally play less stiff than standard DG at the same flex. Bend profiles are similar between both DG 120 and DG OG. To compensate for the lower stiffness of the lighter weight, the DG120 tip will be stiffer than standard DG to help bring down flight and spin. Ball flight and spin should be similar between DG120 and standard DG, despite the lower frequency measurement of DG120. Impact feel may be different (harsh) to some due to the stiffer tip in DG120.

I’ve played TI X100, OG DG S300, DG Tour Elevate, Project X LZ 6.5, Modus etc.  my irons are Nike VR Pro Blades.  I made the switch to TI X100 120 earlier this year.

my current set up is then soft stepped once with my 4i ssx2 with DG S300 7i & 8i shafts in my SM8 wedges.

luckily I build all of my own clubs and I do feel it takes finding the right flex literally for each club to get these dialed in but overall I’ve finally found the shafts that are here to stay.  With the 5i soft stepped I tend to snap hook and it was the same with the other long irons but I’ve got it dialed in now.

the s300 pairs really well with these especially using a 7i or 8i Bc trimming down to the shorter length sheds some of the weight.

btw this is the set up Cantlay currently uses, TI x100 120 & DG S300 in wedges so it must be good and it works for me!

I play DG 120 TI S400. I don’t find they feel any stiffer or more harsh than the regular weight S400, just easier to swing…
