27-hole round: posting a handicap?

Recommended Posts

For all of you who play more than 18, how do you link your handicap?

For example, yesterday, I played twilight: 3:20 tee-off. I got through 18 by 6:40 PM and with nobody in front of me, was able to hustle through the front 9 again by 8:00.

I shot 6 over on the front 9 (blue tees), 2 over on the back 9 (blue tees), and 1 over on the front 9 (championship tees)

I figure there are 3 ways I could post scores: average the front 9 (3.5) and add the back 9, post a 8 over score and a 3 over score, or simply ignore one or the other front 9.

Ideas?  This is pretty typical of me.  I don't golf enough and therefore don't  find my swing about the 10th or 12th hole. The last event I played in, the championship flight winner was 79. I shot an 87 but was one under for the final 7 holes, which was by far the best score for holes 12 through 18. The last round I played, 3 weeks ago, was 8 over on the front 9 and -1 for the back 9.   I don't want to say the first 9 was a warmup, as I did shoot that, but on the other hand, I posted a much better score on the 19-27 from the back tees, after walking a full 18 in Dallas heat on a hilly course (Stevens Park).  I clearly wasn't tiring.  In fact, I would argue that as I do tire a bit, I play better golf as I am more relaxed and not trying to swing the club so damn hard.  I always want to try and hit that booming 320 yard drive but in reality, figuring out the consistent 285 fairway swing is going to get me further in the long run (which is why I use the 4-wood at Stevens a lot: fairway and plenty of distance to leave a PW or gap wedge to the green).

An idiotic rule by an idiotic "governing" body.

And some don’t like the OB rule…..but it is the rule.

Let’s say you have a match coming up this weekend and you and the other guy are even in handicap.  But wait! He posts a few higher than normal scores “playing solo” with no one to verify.

Seem right by you?

You can remove the might not…as they are not postable.

I seldom play 9 holes so if I do 27, I only post the 18 hole round.  Never know if another 9 hole round will present itself.

It is odd (although I played with my group for 18 and a different guy for the last 9).

For example, I typically don't play with people I know.  Those I do play with and know don't carry a handicap. So even if I wasn't playing solo, how would it be "verifiable"?  Does someone call the course, find out who I was paired with, track that person down online, and ask them to verify my score?  I just post my scores on The Grint as I shoot them, and no, I am not going to ask a random playing partner to sign up for an account just to verify my score.  I only play with one guy who can verify scores on there, and he stopped playing due to a herniated disc.  Sure, he is a good friend and would go on there and lie about playing with me during those rounds if I asked, but again, manipulation....

Second, if I like or don't like a score, I can choose not to post it and nobody would be the wiser.  I can easily manipulate my score by choosing to post only the rounds I choose to post.  Not to mention that when I play with others, I am typically keyed in on my round, not theirs.  I know yesterday that one of my assigned playing partners was giving himself multiple mulligans (and counting it toward a handicap) but I wasn't going to keep his score-he didn't ask me to and probably would have gotten upset at me for mentioning that mulligans aren't really part of a formal handicapped score (he gave himself at least 3 verbally, probably more though).

So why only allow scores that are "verifiable" when so many obstacles and workarounds exist?

I carry a handicap so that I can be properly flighted in the occasional tournament.  I want to play with players as good or better than me: I don't want to be paired with guys shooting 90 most of the time. But I raced bicycles for many years and as soon as you start sandbagging, you either get "upgraded" or the peloton takes justice out you and you get crashed out of a race.  Can't really crash someone out of a golf tournament for sandbagging, but winning 2 events in a row should be cause for a flight upgrade, no matter the official handicap.  Everybody can see pretty quickly who has game and who doesn't, right?

"For example, I typically don't play with people I know.  "

Hmm

From the general impression one gets from your comments and your attitude to golf and the rules - you got the above statement the wrong way round.

It should read

"For Example,  typically people who know me don't play with me."

You really should (must, according to the Rules) post those 9-hole scores, as long as you're in the USGA areas.  If a 9-hole score get too old without being paired, the system simply drops it from your record.

I haven't figured out how to post a less than 18 hole round online.  I tried to post 15 on the executive course awhile back and it wouldn't let me.  The executive course has been turning into a 4-hour round recently, yikes!

You can only post 9 or 18 hole scores.

If you only played 15 holes you need to add the remaining 3 holes according to the handicapping rules - net par for holes not played.

If you are in GB&I the apps or PC software will do it for you

...or, post 3 nine-hole rounds, and let GHIN combine them.  Might be better especially if playing different tees on each nine.

If played from differing tees each nine then yes, post three nines. If not post the first 18 and the 9 separate.  Any post suggesting not posting the extra 9 is cheating the system.
