Southern Pines

I haven't been to Southern Pines, but I remember when MidSouth changed over to Champion Bermuda for their greens.  When they opened, they putted perfect.  They were kind of hard, but rolling the ball was really good.  I expect Southern Pines to be just as good.

I walked it about 3 weeks ago and the greens were coming in nicely then - they are Bermuda and the weather has been great for growing Bermuda grass so I would assume they are pretty good by now, and of course they put in a much better irrigation system during the redo.  I'm a member and have tee times on 9/26 -

They did get rid of/soften the wild green tiers that were on 1,2,3,4,5,10,11,14,18

Do you know which grass they used on the greens?

Mini Verde.

Which (I believe) is the same they have on Pine Needles and Mid Pines - unbelievable how it holds up to traffic. The last year has been pretty much straight out tee times and they are reliably great (other than when they aerate).  Even a short 135yd par 3 like #3 at Pine Needles holds up over the non-growing seasons - and no shorty Par 3's at SPGC....

That's my understanding as well.  It seems that both the MiniVerdi and the Champion hold up really well, and are nearly grain-free.  The greens seem to stay pretty fast and almost completely free of ball marks and foot damage, even when I've been in town at Thanksgiving, what seems to be "dormant" season for the grasses.

Trying to figure out if its worth a trip down there in the next couple weeks or if I should wait a bit longer.  Sounds like the course is still in great shape though.

Not sure how far away you are but me and some buddies think it’s worth a 1.5hr drive to check her out at the end of September.

Not much of a drive for me.  Only about an hour so it probably worth it for sure.

Well I hope you both go, and post some feedback here.  I won't be there until mid-November.

Played Southern Pines on Sept. 10. The greens were in great shape. I would not hesitate to play them now. However, the par three 14th was not open...so they substituted the new par 3 "lost hole" into our round. Also, I don't believe all the proposed "championship" tees are present yet.

Of course, the green fees have already increased.

The green expansions are the highlight of the reno in my opinion. Some of the new bunkers/waste areas seem like overkill. Still, probably my favorite course in the area.

I think its still in between what it was and what it wants to be.

I had this impression when I played it just before Thanksgiving.  The turf is still growing in through many areas, the areas off of the course (clubhouse, practice range) are still a work in progress, but the changes made look great to me.  The greens have a lot of contour, the mini-verde grass on the greens is already good, the removal of so many trees gives the course a really different visual appeal.

Oh, it was fine to play.  I don't think the bulk of the work was done until maybe June, but it was mostly grown in by mid-November when we were there..  We played all three in a row, had a blast, although one guy kept muttering something about " *%&@*$&@# Donald Ross %^*@&@^$&% Donald Ross" by the end.  But then we played Tobacco Road, and all of a sudden Ross looked like a good guy to him.

Have fun.  I'll be there around the same time, playing in the Golfer's Journal event at the Pines,  Mid, Southern, and Needles.

Having a hard time booking a round at any of the pines course as an out of resort guest. Anyone have any tips on how to book in advance? Need two tee times on Saturday April 15th.

I know that Talamore Travel can make golf-only bookings, you might at least give them a call.  I don't know what they'll do if you're only looking to book a single day's golf.  April 15 is smack dab in the middle of peak demand times in the Pinehurst area.
