Kiawah Island - Anyone stay in the Villas

YMark

Recommended Posts

I'm going to play in a tournament in February at Kiawah Island and they have a group rate at the Villas. We'll be playing the Ocean and Osprey Point courses. I have a couple questions:

  • Can you walk from the Villas to the courses, not sure where the villas are exactly
  • While it's more expensive, would it be better to stay at the resort? I'll have my wife with me and she'll probably want a massage / spa service
  • Is the weather pretty decent in mid February or should I plan on layering.

Thanks for any help / suggestions.

I haven't played Kiawah, but I've been to the Charleston area plenty of times so I can only speak to the weather portion of your questions.

Like most places in the southeast, Kiawah will be pretty hit or miss when it comes to the weather in February. If you are expecting it to be "perfect beach weather" then  you may be a little disappointed. Most days the high will be mid 50s to low 60s. However, you may have a few days that barely get into the 40s (and freezing temps at night) and a few days that might be in the high 70s.

I'd go in expecting it to be primarily cool to comfortable, but be prepared to layer up if you need to.

I’ve been quite a few times, even in Feb. Here are a few thoughts:

- You can’t walk from the villas OR The Sanctuary to the Ocean Course

- Villas will be MUCH LESS expensive than The Sanctuary

- If you stay in a Villa, your wife will still have access to the spa

- I have played the course when it was a cool low 50s in Feb and also when it was a perfect upper 70s

I visit Kiawah often. There is no single location for the villas, it could be different areas of the island. Kiawah uses the word villas to refer to various accommodation types, including private homes. In any event, you likely will be a 10-15 minute drive from the Ocean course. You could theoretically be in walking distance to Osprey, but it’s not likely.

It’s easy to get to the Sanctuary for spa service. But if your wife wants to just walk out of the room to the pool, spa, etc., you’ll need to stay in the Sanctuary. It is a magnificent hotel, and I would stay there if it’s just you and the wife. On the other hand, the villas are nice for a golf trip. You can get a four bedroom house to share with other golfers or couples.

Weather in February is hit or miss, but it likely won’t be so cold that you cant get comfortable with layers.

We went with 8 guys and got four two bed villas.  I may be jaded by our experience but the villas were not very good at all.  My brother and I got one of the newly renovated ones but when we arrived we were greeted by old bloody tissues in the waste baskets in the bathroom and bedroom, stained sheets, etc.  Some of the other guys had villas that were very outdated and had terrible mold/mildew smell/stains.  They immediately checked into the Sanctuary instead.  It was quite a #$# show with having guys trying to relocate, etc.  The resort did have housekeeping come re-clean our entire unit and it was fine for a guys trip but I would never stay in one with my wife.  We had SUV's to drive to the courses.

Wow. I ended up getting a Marriott in Charleston. Way more things for my wife to do while I'm playing golf.
