Why hasn’t Gary Woodland won more events?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it, Gary.

I'm surprised it took someone this long to go there.  I completely agree.  I get why someone like Phil wanted to lose weight and try different dieting as a means to extend his career on the big tour but it made zero sense for Gary Woodland right in his prime to do something so drastic and needless.

just goes to show how tiny the margin is between being top tier and not... he really is confounding to me and has fallen flat lately.

Guy hits it a mile (at least he used to) and winning at pebble on those tiny tiny greens isn't easy. hopefully he can put it all back together. maybe he should try armlock?

Seems like one of the best and most genuine guys on tour. Not many would have done what he did with Amy B. at the Waste Management.

1. As stated above winning is hard, really hard. A bad bounce on the second hole on Thursday can derail the whole week. Also the week you're hot there is someone who is just one stroke hotter. So the other player holed out a wedge on Thursday and wins by one.

2. Just having a long career on tour is great. Basically you've been in the top ~150 in your career. Think about guys who have managed to stay on tour for long times, Pat Perez, Charles Howell. Charles Howell has played in 50 majors, one top ten. Just stays consistent.

3. Forget who said it, but basically there are about 15-20 guys on tour trying to win, everyone else is just trying to cash a check. Some guys win one major and thats gets them going to win more (Like Phil or Brooks), other guys win one and kind of look around and go, thats it? (Duval). Between on course, off course, investments, these guys are already set, plus they have the ability to keep making more money, somewhat hard for some of these guys to miss out on their family lives so they can hit balls for 8 hours hoping they outwork a guy by one stroke. And really, it all comes down to money in a sense. Yes, Martin Kaymer has a better career than Rickie Fowler, but who will they remember longer and who prob has more money.

4. I think we expect too much. There are way more guys who have won a single major, then somewhat disappeared, than gone on a run. Yet, we expect more often than not double digit wins and multiple majors.

RE: 2&3,  this is a big thing.  Too many people get caught up in major championships, wins, etc.  It makes a great soundbite to say "I'm out there to win", but in reality, unless the playing rights are secured, finishing high is a pretty good result.  It's a job at the end of the day, and this is a job that requires you to do certain things to keep it. It is not a game like people like to say.  But it's a lot easier to simply say "it's about winning or nothing."  Well, sure, when you're not the one there and having to pay the bills.

I feel like it's this more than anything.

If you're just just old enough to have come up in the Tiger era, followed by Rory and then Spieth - both of whom were being positioned as "the next Tiger" and went on a tear for a couple years - it's easy to think that multiple majors and double digit wins before age 30 is supposed to be the norm.

But outside the all-time greats, that's just practically never the case and never has been.

Plus I think people forget how much of a "grind" it is on tour. Like Tiger said, its a lot of golf courses, hotels, and airports. Constant travel. Every week its a new city with the same demands in terms of people, charting the course, practice, and sponsors. I know prob most of us would do it if we could in a heartbeat, but tour golf is a lot different than playing the saturday round at your local course.

Other tidbit:

To get to 125 on the money list last year you needed ~$996K, which is what Francesco Molinari had. If you finished second at the Players you made ~$1.6M and second at the Memorial was just over $1.0M. Talk order to finish second, but sometimes you just need a win or a second or a couple high finishes to keep your card, yet, there is still a lot of turnover. Sometimes guys just find ways to win, a guy like Jim Herman, just keeps them going.

Years ago, music fans learned eclectic rocker Frank Zappa was making a movie about life on tour. Well, Frank hinted it wasn't always that exciting. The movie was called 200 Motels.

For the PGA Tour, I would suspect scrambled sleep patterns would be a major drain, even if you're doing well. Travel planning can be problematic...

  • Sunday morning you're eight shots back and tee off at 9 AM. You plan to play things out and catch a 5 PM flight to next stop. But, the three-shot leader gets bitten by an alligator and has to withdraw, and you shoot -7 and end up as clubhouse leader with possible playoff looming. Playoff or not, you're spending the night.
  • The next stop has two pro-am tournaments. Are you slated for the Monday or the Wednesday event?
  • Oops, you don't make the cut. If you had Thursday noon and Friday 8AM tee times, you can leave town Friday afternoon.  If you had Thursday 8 AM and Friday noon, chances are you can't fly away until sometime Saturday.
  • You're exhausted, have played seven weeks in a row, and you're now ranked #125 in FedEx points. Do you skip a week to rest up, and end up outside the top 125?

I recall a movie from years ago as well.  It was a about a successful and self-made businessman who dedicated his life to his work.  After his first wife’s death, he married the wrong woman and they divorced.  She was a floozy.  It changed his perspective about life and order to heal his wounds, get closer to his son he returned to college to achieve an education.  He decided to attend the same university as his son.  That man’s name was Thornton Melon and the school he attended was Grand Lakes University.  He was a great man, a man of vision and guts.  And there isn’t even a plaque, or a signpost or statue of him in that town!  One of the business professors tried to knock him down and have his admittance blocked.  No one knows who gave the order. When I heard it, I wasn’t angry: I knew Thornton, I knew he was head-strong, talking loud and saying stupid things, so when he got all Ds and one A, I let it go.  And I said to myself, this is the university he chose; I didn’t ask who gave the Ds, because it had nothing to do with the university.

These guys are all excellent ball strikers and good to great putters on the PGA Tour.  It takes a bit of luck like a hot putter and or otherworldly ball striking on any given week, however, what separates the guys that win often from the ones that don't is what's in between the ears.  There's a lot to be said about a guy that has strong mental fortitude.  Tiger and Jack already had the skills to pay the bills, but it was their ability to get in the zone and stay in it on Sundays when the pressure would make most golfers crack and implode.

I was watching his us open highlights the other day and his ballstriking is pretty incredible when he is playing well. I started thinking why he hasn’t won more events. That float load can be and gift and a curse.
