Jack’s Majors Ranking

Holy Moses

Recommended Posts

US Open is tough and dirty.  It's hard to win it.  The Open is open, for the world.   PGA is the best of the PGA.   The Masters is a manufactured thing.   It's a lot of what makes golf look bad to much of the world.  Honestly.

Mr. Nicklaus won't say it, nor will others, but Augusta tries really hard to appear accommodating to the 'amateur' golfer.   Sure....

I rank according to food!

1. Masters-wings, bbq, all tastiest

2. Open-is in morning so bacon and eggs and coffee, nice

3. US Open-pretty good, like roast beef hero

4. PGA Championship ? What is it? Did they just invent it?

Speaking of obliques, my IQ so low I gave my own thigh a “charley horse” doing side crunch during a cardio workout 🤣

PGA is pastrami on rye. A little confusing at first, but eventually you realize it is just a better version of roast beef.

That's just made up.

Appear?  LOL.  AN and its membership have put their influence and money where their mouths aren't (because they aren't out there looking for praise) squarely behind a lot of initiatives supporting amateur golf here and around the world the past many years.

Wow, yes, I see the merits in the combo.

Man, lives down the block from Katz? That’s even more tempting  than when I lived across the street from the papaya king on 86th street! 🌭

Yeah, I remember when I was broke I’d get a knish and a dirty water dog for 2 bucks. But when you’re a starving kid, it’s as good as a steak.

Wait! Remember the papaya king slogan?! 🤣🤣

You are pretty much born with your IQ.  I grew up in a blue collar working family and put myself through college.  I've worked very hard to be successful in my career.  Vendors bring me to the Masters, including Berkmans Place.  When your boss asks you to play golf, you say yes.  It's a bonus if it's at Augusta National or any other renowned course.

Not that I owe you or anybody else any kind of explanation.  If you don't like what I post, then just ignore me.  Otherwise you risk sounding petty.

I agree 100% with Jack. Few people will admit it, but Augusta National just isn't a fun course to play, especially for amateurs but even for pros. It's false front after false front, greens that defy logic, it really feels like a job to play 18 holes there let alone 72 holes.

Personally I think there should be 5 majors.  I would swap the Players for the PGA and I would add another in Asia, Australia or even in Europe (Scottish or Irish Open).  The game has become such a global game that having an additional major held outside the US would be a good thing.  I doubt it happens because I don’t think they would want 2 majors being held at the same course every year.

Jack hasn't played competitively on tour now for close to 30 years so his views on the majors and their importance are a lot different than the guys playing today.

Not to say his opinions don't matter (he is the #1 or #2 greatest player of all time depending on how you view Tiger), but I wouldn't say that he speaks for the majority of current playing professionals.

I mean after all my grandparents used to have a lot of strong opinions about things that were widely held beliefs 40 years ago but would not be true today...

How about we just keep things simple and have only two majors: the Open Championship and the US Open.

I agree with Jack's order.

Depending upon your locale you can quibble whether US Open or Open Championship is number 1.  I agree you put PGA Championship ahead of The Masters based upon strength of field.  For me that trumps history and ambience and all that is ANGC, though I really do like all that The Masters is.  But, by its nature, it is an invitational and with the exemptions and invites they extend, it waters down the field.

I also don't agree with the mindset that the USGA has screwed-up/ruined the US Open.  I think the USGA is an easy target for fans, players and media.  The US Open has an identity of being the hardest golf tournament in the world to win.  It has an identity.   You push courses to get that you will ruffle feathers. Tell me what the identity of the PGA Championship is?  God bless links courses but without weather The Open can become a birdie-fest and too closely (imo) mirrors a run-of-the-mill tour event.

Majors are a crescendo within the arrangement of the season.  Each "section" should make logistical sense and build to those major crescendos.  It is a tour and they are touring professionals.  Just like a rodeo or a band travels from city to city in some manner of logistical sense so should the PGA Tour (imo).

Forcing stuff (I am looking at you PGA Championship in May) screws the flow up and changes the purposes of the individual events that surround those majors.

We know why guys are in the John Deere right?  Last chance to get The Open.  We all remember why guys played in the Houston Open when it was held before The Masters.  It was a tune-up on overseeded rye.  The Players in May has more claim to a fifth major than The Players in march.  It filled the May major void nicely.  The Memorial is a strong tournament held right before the US Open (and logistically not far from US Open venues in PA and northeast).  (I, personally, would not include Pebble in the US Open "rotation" but once in a very rare blue moon.)

Carry on.
