No chance Padraig not picking Lowry. His life wouldn't have been worth living in Ireland. Rose is too inconsistent. This will be Poulter's swansong. Really pleased Weisberger got into the nine automatics. Very solid player.

As an Austrian myself, I am happy that we have somebody on the team for the first time, but I have my doubts. The Omega Masters and the BMW PGA showed that not only his putting can let him down under pressure (which he usually compenasates by outwordly ball-striking), but he can also start to throw in the odd block and pull, when the going gets tough. Naturally, I hope he does well, but I am not convinced.
And it is WIESberger, just like it is SpIEth and not Speith.

I see a gap. There definitely is a gap.

Never seems to have been the most convincing putter but maybe making the team on merit will give him a little confidence heading into the week. Interesting that when he does get on a run of form, he seems to keep on it for a while 🤞🏼

Always really like Wiesberger as a player.  He's got a ton of game.

With his ball striking he'll be fabulous in the two 4-ball sessions.

Wiesberger's recent form has been average at best. That collapse at the European Masters on the 18th was unfortunate.

The problem I have with Wiesberger in this team is that his performance in America is very poor for someone who is a regular in the world top 50.

But he qualified so I cannot deny him his place. Not that I could anyway 😂

  • GwrxMod changed the title to Ryder Cup 2020/21 (***NO COVID/POLITICS***)

JR can still stripe it and can make putts, so I don't get passing him up for Poulter.  You can go many directions in arguing for/against Lowry and in the end it is a better pick than (again) Poulter.  What can you argue on behalf of IP?  Those rare moments when he was having a decent tournament, he faded big time.

Not a lot of good options for team Euro.  Given how bad the U.S. is at fourball, it might look a little close Days 1 and 2...maybe, but Euro gets a beat down on Sunday singles.

I love the drama.  The Ryder Cup is my favorite sporting event of the year.  I suspect that some of the picks were based on how well a player fits with the team.  It is a team event and some players just don't fit a team.

Tiger was that way.  The best player in the world for 20 years had one of the worst (39.2% win rate and his team lost seven of the eight years he played) Ryder Cup records.   He just isn't a team player.  Contrast that to Poulter and Garcia.  They both play several levels above their norm when it comes to team play.  I would give you ten to one odds that Tiger could beat Poulter in a four day event during his prime.  But that didn't carry over to the Ryder Cup.

Completely agree - as you say, there are going to be a few players on that European team sheet that aren’t looking great going into the event. Poulter being a pick is a concern - three top 10’s all season is not pick material for me. Sergio is barely any better. I completely see that they have great pedigree in the Ryder Cup but so does Bernhard Langer and I don’t see him getting a pick.  Add in Fitzpatrick and Hatton and I just don’t see how it is possibly going to end well for Europe.

Euro's are gonna get spanked this time around.

I think it is a big mistake not picking Rose.

The Ryder Cup is all about mentality - the talent between the golfers is wafer thin.

Nothing against Lowry, but I just don't see him as a player who will do well at the Ryder Cup.

I would not be betting on Europe this time around unfortunately, but you never know.  If Brooks plays maybe he can destroy the dressing room and give us a chance.

Not a lot of good options for team Euro.  Given how bad the U.S. is at fourball, it might look a little close Days 1 and 2...maybe, but Euro gets a beat down on Sunday singles.

I would have thought so and did, until I listened to the Euro folks really praising the pick and talking about how they feel Poulter has had a solid year -- they seem to be in the know so decided to look some stuff up.  Nobody really seemed all that surprised about Rose, kind of out there, but not as far out, with Stenson in the category of just didn't perform and not exciting this time around.  Would have loved to see those two back together, but not to be.

Looking at stats:

Poulter is 3rd for the season on the PGA Tour in strokes gained putting.  Rose is 36th.  Strokes around the green Poulter is 8th, Rose is 150.  Overall rank in SG Poulter is 37, Rose is 99.  Rose beats him in some categories, but man, 3rd in SG putting?  Pretty darn good.

Performance:

Since May head to head, Rose has the PGA, they tied at one event, Poulter dusted Rose at the Schwab and U.S. Open, Poulter beat Rose at the St. Jude pretty handily and Poulter had the T4 at the Scottish Open (probably a big deal for the Euros) and Rose didn't compete.

Hands down it turns out, Poulter has the edge since the PGA Championship on performance.

Still think Rose's back is an issue for him and contributed to his less than stellar year and maybe to not getting picked because of performance and maybe doubt.

We’re cup half empty over here. I blame Darren Clarke for drinking what is missing. He thought it was Guiness. We fear Lowry may make the same mistake 😂

Nope.  I’ve been saying it even before the final picks.  And now that the Evil Duo are confirmed, it’s even more likely. I may throw my TV out the window before I have to watch Poulter or Garcia dancing on Wisconsin greens. Just about the only acceptable result, to ease the pain of previous years, would be for Poulter to go 0-5 and miss the putt on Sunday to give us the cup.

Now I know why Stricker didn't pick Reed. No way he could fit in those tiny clothes!

That is actually bringing back memories of him being at Gleneagles and walking around with trousers that looked like Tiger rejects from 1999. Enough material bunched at the bottom to make at least another pair.

Yes, then Santa Clause will land on the 18th green and sing Born In the USA.

🤣

Why you getting your hopes up? Just figure we get killed and don’t get invested. Then, if it looks like we gonna win you can get all flag waving and start chanting,
