A sweeper/picker who plays VR Pro Blades and looking for a little bit more forgiveness

Given that I am somewhat shallow through the ball & more of a picker, I have been on the lookout for something that has the playability of a blade but with a little more forgiveness.

I tried the Wilson Staff CB and for some reason we just did not click.

Would the 2021 Titleist T100 irons be an option?

I ask because I understand that they have a new sole design.

Would the TM P7MC irons be more forgiving than the VR Pro blade?

What about the Wilson CB irons didn’t you like?

I am in a similar situation. Shallow swing, playing 2018 Apex MBs, which I love, but would like something that offers a little more forgiveness on slight misses.

I have the 21 X forged 4-6 irons. They are more forgiving, feel great, have nice thin soles. They definitely maintain ball speed on mishits vs the blades. Planned to combo these irons with my MBs but not sure I’m going to keep the X forged irons.

Tried the 21 Apex pros but the sole is wider than the X forged which doesn’t work with my swing.

I have a Wilson staff CB 4 and 5 iron on order just waiting for them to arrive.

I've been playing VR Pros for 3 years now and am also incredibly shallow on the way through - in all honesty, I find the VR Pros impressively forgiving for a set of MB's if you catch it a couple of grooves too low, I find I don't lose much distance at all - it's more if I catch it out the toe, or tee the ball up too high and hit a few grooves to high they tend to get punishing. Luckily my miss is heel side and I've stopped using tees on anything below a 4 iron so am getting a fairly consistent contact with them.

However one set with a bit more help I have enjoyed using are the 718 AP2's - I got similar results to my VR Pros with a little more help out on the toe, even if the feel wasn't quite as good as the Nikes. I have had a quick demo of the T100 in a net and it seemed very similar, if maybe not quite as forgiving at the AP2's, and if I was looking to switch to cavities they'd be getting a thorough investigation. I'd also probably look at the ZX7's and P7-MC's.

The Dee Three - Titleist TS4 9.5 deg, EvenFlow White 6.5 65g, A1 Setting

Henrik - Titleist 917 F3 15 deg, Rogue Max 75x, B2 Setting

The Walking Stick - Titleist 818 H2 19 deg, Rogue Max 85X, A1 Setting

Brooksie - Nike Vapor Fly Pro 2 iron - KBS C-Taper 120S

The Blades - Nike VR Pro 4 - PW, S400 Tour Issue, +0.5 inch

Frankenwedge - Nike SV 52-10, DG Wedge Flex, Much Lead Tape

The Sand Iron - TaylorMade MG2 TW-12 Grind, 56 degree, S400 Tour Issue

The Putter - TaylorMade TP Ardmore 3, 34 inch.

I'm a sweeper as well, and I love the turf interaction the P7MC gives me.  I think they are reasonably forgiving if you are mostly on center for misses.  They are very clean thru the turf IMO.

In regards to what i didn't like about the Wilson Staff CB, its hard for me to pin that one down.  I made to sure to play the same shaft, SW and lie.

I believe I tend to make contact more towards the heel and that might have something to do with it.

The CB's on hits toward the toe was quite forgiving.

I also think the wider sole might have been an issue.  But it still was better sole for me than a Srixon.

Forgot to mention that I am left handed.  It can affect the iron options out there.

I've gone down this road multiple times before and my conclusion inevitably is that I'm better off with blades. The turf interaction with the thin soles of my MP-33s usually produces better strikes versus what I get out of my 718 AP2s or other similar irons I've tried. Additionally, 95% of the time when something is off with my iron game I'm just swinging too hard. When I'm playing the blades I'm more apt to swing easy because I know the trouble I'll get into if I don't. With more forgiving irons I go after it and usually produce worse results. That's all user error, but I'm probably not the only golfer doing this.

I played the VR Pro Blades and I would still have them if didn’t Fall in love with the Cobra RF MBs.  Center of gravity is great for sweeper and picker. Plus the zero offset helps with the hard left turns we tend to get.  More forgiving then you think. I got better distance and spin numbers than the VR Pros also.

+1 for T100 (or T100S). They're fantastic irons. I pick the hell out of the ball and as much as I wanted to love the ZX7's or the current JPX or MP range, I just couldn't.

To me, the the P7MC is more forgiving than the VR Pro blades (which I have tried but not actually used in play), but... The T100 is more forgiving again without sacrificing any of the looks (I wouldn't have said this last year, I thought the P7MC was gorgeous but weirdly chunky) and they don't lose much playability. Check them out. If they work, they work.

The VR Pro have a higher MOI than the P7MC.

Though, the Nike clubhead measured was heavier than the TM head, and club weight affects MOI a bit.

I'm very shallow into the ball with my irons and rarely take much of a divot.  Have been through about 10 sets of irons in the last 5 years and could never get my launch and spin up enough.  Went down the rabbit hole of learning about VCOG (vertical center of gravity) of how irons are engineered and learned a lot of the irons I was trying to play actually had a sweet spot above the equator of the golf ball - not at all going to work well for a sweeper.  Bought some Maltby DBM Forged and haven't looked back.  I'm now hitting 6 irons with a decent angle I was used to seeing out of a PW.  Can't say enough about these clubs - They look great behind the ball with a thin top line and a squarish shape and feel amazing.  Have about 20 rounds on them so far and durability seems to be better than anything I've owned.  Before buying these I was between some PXG 0211 gen 1 and some PING i200 and have since sold both.  DBM Forged will not be leaving my bag.

I would think jpx 921 tours would be pretty seamless transition.  Or 919 tours to save a little cash.  Very similar designed irons.  Not sure how similar the sole designs are, but the tours definitely fit shallow swingers.

New Level irons are money.  I have the pf2/pf1 combo and they are fantastic and fairly forgiving....probably on par with the VR blades which I used to play as well.  Outside of that, the Srixon Z forged are really solid too.
