Advice Needed on Raising Lofts ( Mizuno MP-20 HMB )

Recommended Posts

I play with 52 (115 yards), 56 (100 yards), and 60 (85 yards) degree wedges and my 9 iron is steadily in the 170s, so I’d like to change my iron lofts from:

MP-20 HMB Original Lofts

2 Iron: 16° Loft

3 Iron: 19° Loft (not in bag)

4 Iron: 22° Loft

5 Iron: 25° Loft

6 Iron: 28° Loft

7 Iron: 32° Loft

8 Iron: 36° Loft

9 Iron: 41° Loft

PW: 46° Loft

to:

New Proposed Lofts MP-20 HMB

2 Iron: 16° Loft

3 Iron: 19° Loft  (not in bag)

4 Iron: 22° Loft

5 Iron: 25° Loft

6 Iron: 30° Loft

7 Iron: 35° Loft

8 Iron: 40° Loft

9 Iron: 44° Loft

PW: 48° Loft

Questions:

(1) I understand that this will increase the bounce, but is there anything else I should be concerned about?

(2) Is the maximum loft adjustment for a particular club published anywhere?

(3) The 8 iron would be lofted an extra 4*, is that too much?

Thank you!

  • ElMacho changed the title to Advice Needed on Raising Lofts ( Mizuno MP-20 HMB )

When you weaken loft you add bounce and decrease off set

Strengthen loft you subtract bounce and increase off-set

you would really be changing the look and playability of the club, whether it can be done ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If it were me, I would strengthen my 5 iron 1-2* and drop my 4 iron, perhaps flatten the lie 1* and throw the 4 iron shaft in the 5 iron (soft step 1X) probably won’t even notice a change in feel, then strengthen the 9 iron 1* and the PW 2* and add a 48* wedge

so you would be looking more like this

2 Iron = 16*

3. (not in bag)

4 (Not in bag)
5 Iron = 24* (Strengthen 1* flatten lie 1* add 1/2”)

6 iron = 28*
7 iron = 32*
8 iron = 36*
9 iron = 40* (Strengthen 1*)
PW =     44* (Strengthen 2*)
AW =.    48*  (Added Wedge)
GW =.    52*
SW. =.    56*
LW =.     60*

This way, you are not altering the playability of the clubs so much!

Just a thought!

Thank you. It makes a lot of sense and I take it under advisement. The downside is it requires the purchase of an additional club, and I'm excited about the idea of a lofted PW HMB, I feel like it will scrape heaven. Still, your idea may be the way to go.

Does anyone know if manufacturers publish loft adjustment limits?

Most manufacturers say +/- 2 degrees. Anything more risks breaking the hosel.  You can get away with more, but it's at your own risk.  My question is why is there such a huge gap in yardage between you 52(115) and 41* 9 iron(170)? Our wedge yardages are pretty similar, but my 42* 9 iron plays at 145.  Have you had the loft checked already?  Is your swing that much different between your wedges and irons?  What is your PW and 8 iron distance?  Are there any other large gaps, or smaller gaps in your set up?  Something else has to be effecting the yardage variance if you haven't altered your swing speed.  If it were me I'd first get my lofts checked if you haven't already, your 9 may already be strong.

On their website Mizuno says irons can be bent +/- 2* so what you're asking for is well outside of their recommended range.  Could it be done?  Maybe, but as someone else mentioned, you take a chance to breaking the club.

Same.

Maybe is it a spin issue?
Are the numbers on the course, or off a mat?

I hit my wedges similar distances

50* 123y

56* 103y

 9 iron 151y

I also play the HMB in 5-PW

my swing speed is around 112-114mph with a Driver and 93-94mph with a 7 iron

As far as not wanting to buy another club, you could always sell your 3 and 4 iron to pay for it. Many people seek out the HMB’s for long iron replacements in their  sets. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It’s pretty weird, right? I wonder if my set is not correctly lofted from the factory. The PW is about 140+, the 9 is 170, the 8 is 185, 7 is usually just shy of 200, 6 is a steady 215, then it gets more variable depending on my strike.

I swing the driver in the mid 120s and usually get 310 to as much as 350. However, I don’t swing my irons hard at all. My standard finesse 9 is no less than 160 and I’m not good enough to choke down… that always translates into something terrible.

Your’s is a great idea. Everyone I mentioned this to, so far, says it’s a bad idea. I haven’t abandoned my original plan, but I feel close.

Your offset will also look messed up AF

Hey everyone, thanks for the feedback. I've decided to get a 48* wedge and to change just two lofts:

9 Iron: 41° Loft ==> 40 (-1)

PW: 46° Loft ==> 44 (-2)

I almost certainly would have ruined my set without everyone's, including some's offline, feedback. So, THANK YOU!

UPDATE:

So I went to have my lofts changed, as described in the previous post, and the fitter measured my PW at 45° and the 9-iron at 38.5°. Now, it's perfectly clear why I've had so much trouble gapping this part of my bag! I purchased the HMBs "as new" on eBay shortly after their release. Given their packing, etc. they were new... but, clearly, they were pre-bent to someone else's specifications.

Did the offset progression look off at all?

I have to admit, I'm not experienced enough to notice.

Exactly why I invested in my own loft and lie machine. I have had so many clubs checked on it that weren't right its shocking.
