Hunter Mahan is an announcer now?

Turned in late to the Maridoe College event and Hunter Mahan was announcing. Anyone catch this? Thoughts? Is he giving up on playing?

Hadn’t heard this but seems pretty logical. He seems to have been banging his head against a brick wall for 5-6 years now and getting absolutely nowhere, the constant grind being met with nothing but failure must just tiresome and expensive sooner rather than later.

He needs a haircut.

Funny you say that because there's never been a middle ground with him.  He's either been hair farmer Hunter or corporate Hunter but you never see the in between.

Whatever he does I hope he's happy doing it.  I've never played professionally but I've had times in my playing career where the game has come and gone.  Its not a fun roller coaster.

Ten years ago he was losing to Bill Hass in a playoff in the Tour Championship.  Now in the announcer's booth before the age of 40.

For that matter, Haas too has done next to nothing in the past few years.

Amazing how quick it can fall.  Which is why the grinders who can keep their cards and stay competitive year after year should be celebrated.

It really is! I'm looking at the 2011 Presidents Cup teams (both Haas and Mahan were on it) and Phil Mickelson is the only guy on that entire team to have won a tournament this year.

It's good to see people with real world experience getting roles as commentators and announcers rather than someone who has a lot of armchair book-learning getting a job.

Its nice to have that perspective from one of the commentators but I appreciate professional commentators.  The good ones are amazing.

Interesting, but good for him.

Not that its "good" to see, but sometimes gives yourself re-assurance when you have good and bad playing days yourself and sometimes it happens to pros. I wonder what really happened to Hunter; I know not everyone can play on tour forever, but just where his game went south. Sometimes it just one extra swing a round is the difference. I always felt Hunter would shoot sub 65 in the 1st round and then kind of hangout, stop doing that golf gets harder, but I also dont have any stats on it.

He actually did a podcast with his old OSU coach Mike McGraw recently and if you listened closely you can tell he wants to retire but isn’t saying so. Says he’s very happy with his home, family and overall spot in life.

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

He was pretty bad but kind of in a good way.  Although I'm pretty over hearing announcers saying "gotta hit fairways and greens", that's kind of anywhere.

You can hardly blame him. Hard decision to make, relatively speaking, he is still young but it seems to have been years of not being able to move forward with anything.

Amen to that.  We love to focus on the top dogs of the game but how about some love for the Charley Hoffman, Kevin Streelman, and the Ryan Palmers of the tour.  Guys that aren't perennial winners on tour but find a way to make the playoffs more often than not and avoid having to play for status on Korn Ferry.

We should probably get used to this in this era of silly levels of money on Tour.

A lot of these guys have amassed $5-10mm of career earnings plus all their sponsor and corporate gig money. If it becomes pointless to play they have lots of other opportunities.

    • APPLY NOW: L.A.B. Golf MEZZ.1 Putter (Early Access) Member Testing! 10 Testers Needed!
L.A.B. Golf is choosing ten GolfWRX members to receive their MEZZ.1 putter early and put their brand new product to the test before reporting back to the community about what they see. The selected testers will be one of the first to experience the MEZZ.1 from L.A.B. GOLF, their newest Lie Angle Balanced design, ahead of it's January 2022 launch!

About The L.A.B. Golf Mezz.1 Putter
MEZZ.1 is our new mid-mallet putter that’s fully CNC machined from a billet of 6061 aircraft aluminum (body) and 303 stainless steel (midsection) to create our best-feeling — and we think best looking — putter to date. It includes 10 weights (eight on the bottom, two on the sides) that allow us to individually build each putter to a golfer’s exact specifications.

      How To Apply
In a post below, answer the following questions.

      1. City, State?
      2. Handicap?
      3. What is your current putter?
      4. Have you ever used a L.A.B. Golf putter?
      5. Why do you want to review the MEAZZ.1 putter?
      6. Do you agree to participate in an ongoing testing thread, posting reviews and photos?

That's it! @labgolf and GolfWRX will choose the testers in about 2 weeks! This testing event is for good-standing members in the USA only!
