Putter color - any preferences?

bankbank

Recommended Posts

I've been playing for around 25 years, and I've used an Anser style putter all my life, though switch brands here and there. Would not play mallets as the shape just doesn't suit my eye..

Looking back up to now, I've just realized that I putt much, much better with a black putter. Bad putting spells were all from silver/grey putters somehow... Just a personal preference from my side I guess 🤣

Do you have a color that you prefer?

I love the long-term ease of maintenance of a plain Stainless finish. But like do also love the contrast a black putter head gives. But having a marked / chipped up black finish would drive me nuts 🤷‍♂️

***I was at the BMW PGA at Wentworth last week. And saw a surprising number of players using the Red Odyssey putters.  Which surprised me as they look quite ‘busy’ at address imo…….

Anser style putter for me as well.  Went to a mallet for about 5 years and that made things worst.  Changed my putting stroke, went back to anser style and haven't looked back.  Color doesn't matter to me but I'm used to good ole' stainless steel so that's what I have in the bag now.

I like a variety of finishes, just variety and makes the putter ho'ing more enjoyable. One thing for me that is a constant is that my putters tend to be matte or satin finished, I don't like high gloss from the glare of the sun at address. The other is contrast with the finish and the alignment, a satin or bead blast will get a black line, anything dark will get a white line.

As for finish colors a satin, bead blast, or brushes on stainless is the easiest to care for. I just got a torched stainless which looks great but will wear over time from usage and contact with things that could strip the finish but it won't chip. My next putter will have a dark oil can finish which would be the same as the other torched finish. I have plans for a black oxide but again that wears too, I would love a black PVD finish but not sure the durability of that and paying extra for a finish that could chip isn't ideal to me.

Anything but red, which I don't understand in a putter. Red is the most noticeable color to the human eye (which is why stop lights and stop signs are red). If anything, one would think a red putter might distract the puttee from his or her focal point while putting (assuming the putter head itself is not the focal point). I would think that red is the last color one would want in a putter.

I play a mallet (pxg operator H) and prefer black.  less reflections and glare out in the sun.  I had a different mallet in the past that was more silver and I actually had it powder coated black to cut down on the glare.  My other putter is a newport 2 so for that type of putter, color/finish doesn't really make a difference to me.

I'm in the market for a putter right now & I've been looking around testing various things before I take the plunge. I've found a black blade is the least distracting for me. Some of the more colorful designs just don't work for me. It's the same with some of the mallets and all the weird lines and shapes. A simple solid blade with a centre line is perfect for me.

I am a big fan of the finish on my current gamer. Torched raw finish. It looks great with a little Patina since this picture but it is unique for sure.

Color never really mattered to me until I got my current putter.  White with a black sightline that works in perfect symmetry with my white ball with black line just has me really confident with my alignment when I'm over the ball.

Dark oil can finishes are nice too, used to have one of the old scotty coronado oil can. Putted well with that one too for a short spell, but couldn't get on with the shape on shorter putts

yeah understand that logic of the stop light... For me personally I would never get a red putter as well, but a putter is such a 'personal' thing, some of the color choices or custom finishes on putters that I have seen on the course is mind-blowing

While it does not have to be red, I had Continental Golf paint an Odyssey #7 mallet red just because I liked to look over the stainless. Best I've putted with of all putters I've tried. My putting has sucked this year, but it is a speed issue, all on me not the putter.

I had not really considered the question previously, but in thinking about it I would have to say that I have a preference for black putters. I grew up on more stainless steel blade style putter heads or the old, darker PING anser tarnished brass look. I have found that, as of recent, I am more apt to purchase and putt with black mallets. Strange change.

I really like a satin/stainless head with a black shaft and black grip. The contrast just looks good to me. My setup is similar to Louis Oosthuizen's with a black Ping PP58 midsize, black shaft (though mine isn't a Stability shaft), and satin blade head.

My actual putting performance is not quite like his, though.

All of the putters I have used have been more of a stainless steel with a little bit of a matte finish on them. I bought a 2nd putter off of eBay for practice, and the head is more glossy than the putter I was using. Nothing ridiculous, but I prefer the more matte one. I got the glossy one regripped and have been using it the past few rounds and been putting very well with it so obviously it doesn't bother me too much.

I prefer copper patina as my first choice or a darker satin finish.  I prefer not to have the reflection of the sun in my eyes when lining up a putt.

I prefer a steel putter but I currently have a black Bettinardi.  I like the putter but the finish around the edges have some how worn and now in the daylight I see shiny steel. BTW I keep a cover on the putter all the time except when I actually put so I do not know how it got worn down. I have about 100 rounds on it. Wish I knew how to refinish it.

Just came across this thread as I’ve changed my putter again! I taken up golf last year and I’ve had so many putters looking for the right one. Thankfully I’ve been wheeling and dealing so not taken too much of a financial hit.  Most have been either anser style or double wide.

I’ve had Odyssey, bettinardi, Ping both brand new and 40 odd years old, Evnroll and Scotty Camerons alongside a few cheap models.

I’ve realised it has to be a satin finish for me. I’ve had 2 black putters and my eyes were getting so distracted with the contrast of a white line on the black finish on address. My eyes get drawn to it every time. Had to sell my ping 2021 anser 2 2021 today. Looks a stunning putter but definitely not for me. And as someone said, when it starts to chip, it would drive me even further around the bend
