Using wedges that match your irons

I play T200 irons and the pitching wedge is 43*. That’s a very strong loft for a PW. My first gap wedge is a Ping at 47*. My second gap wedge is a Vokey at 52* and my sand wedge is a Ping at 56*. I don’t recall ever playing wedges beyond the PW that matched my set of irons.

Well, I’ll give it a shot and see how it works for me. The GW spot has been a very tricky one for me to fill, so crossing my fingers this will be the right solution!

I wondered that as well and just decided to make it an experiment. I think the sole of the wedge is great around the greens but it wasn’t as good for me as a 100 yard club which my 50 degree wedge is mostly used for.

Set 3-L. Mine are old and even have a 10 iron between the 9-P. Try not to use a wedge unless I have to get over something, prefer to bump and run. Difference in skill levels I guess.

Gotcha. Yeah, that’s what I’m looking for also…my GW is usually my 90-110 club, but the Zipcore GW’s spin so much and launch so high for me that I can’t consistently get that yardage at all.

I've never played a matched set of wedges to my irons. I replace the wedges almost every year and keep my irons for 5-7 years.

I have my PW and GW matching my irons, then use 2 specialty wedges for SW and LW

gap wedge is doable for sure, I did have some old Ping I3 blades irons that I used as a matching set back in the early 2000's.  I had Ping do custom grinds on them though at the factory.  They were great wedges, but the soles OTR were very boxy, so I had a heel grind put on the SW and a full heel and trailing edge grind put on the LW, similar to a M grind.  

 

Rule of thumb, if you use the club almost exclusively for a full swing shot a matching wedge is fine, if not desirable.  If you hit a lot of partial shots, finesse shots and it is a general short game club go with a traditional wedge, get the correct grind for your game and play it a bit flatter relative to your full swing set.

Still looking for a gw for full shots, some half shots, and occasionally shots around the green...

I had ping Eye-2 1-LW (without the 2iron, GWs weren't really a thing yet) back in the early 2000s and they were great, the eye-2 wedges were fantastic and I recall many tour guys using them until the mid 2000s. Lol that 1 iron was awesome but it was for off the tee only.

 

I just put the ZX-7s in the bag with the A wedge (51-8), though that A wedge behaves like a specialty wedge, feels nice  I also don't use the gapper for much other than fullish shots 110-115 I just love the thing. I'll use the gap for chipping like a PW or 9iron but that's pretty much it. Maybe once or twice a season on a wedge length bunker shot where I have lots of green, but rarely.

As others have stated most player/gi iron lofts are jacked up so a PW is in the old 9 iron, 43-45 range instead of 47-49. I get iron set up to PW, skip the set AW/GW, and then grab individual wedges to gap down, i like having a 48-52-56-60 mix in the bag
