Patrick Cantlay voted PGA Tour player of the year, over No. 1 Jon Rahm

I'd think the opposite, or that he's just tolerated.  I know he's improved some, but his temper comes across as whining and I think that puts him in the same category as Sergio, Bubba, Poulter, Bryson, etc.

was my first thought as well, players must have something against him for his temper, which id agree on...even though i understand its the competitiveness, it still comes across wrong at times, and probably why guys chose to vote cantlay over rahm. the lockerroom dynamic is something you dont hear about as much because the tour is a lot better about keeping things in the lockerroom vs other sports.

i dislike rahm and still thought he should have gotten it. but i totally get cantlay had 4 wins and that deserves some recognition, regardless of how he got them since you still have to go out and execute despite the situation you find yourself in.

The fact that Rahm had to WD is irrelevant.  Cantlay can't control any of that.  And there's nothing 'hollow' about it...he still had to beat Morikawa in a playoff to win the tournament.

Everyone knows the TC rules, and Cantlay won.  There's nothing 'hollow' about winning wire to wire with tens of millions on the line.  Plenty of guys have choked for much less.

Yeah, Cantlay can't control any if that, but if Rahm didn't get cancelled at Memorial and won, the TC looks totally different.  Rahm would have a much bigger chance of winning because his starting strokes for TC would have been better. As it stood in TC, Rahm finished only one stroke back, but started with four stroke deficit. Made up three strokes in TC.

i'd be curious what others think... as a hypothetical....which is better?

4 wins and 1 added top ten over the season none a major....or

1 win, a major, and 15 top ten, half being top 5s.

the only point being i'm tired of someone finishing 3rd in an event of 150+ players and getting zero recognition as if its win or nothing.

I agree to some extent. Obviously the world ranking system agrees as well. I just think at the end of the day, your career will mostly be judged by wins. Although Matt Kuchar and Charles Howell III have done pretty well…

The tour messed things up with the dumb handicapped tour championship, the OWGR certainly doesn't recognize Cantlay's win there, he only received 15.79 points for that event versus Jon Rahm's (and Kevin Na's) 51.2. That said, 3 wins still beats one major in my book so Rahm is still out of luck. I'd give it to Morikawa personally.

Lose lose situation for the PGA. If they go with Rahm, there'd be just as many people complaining that Cantlay got robbed.

Some of these points have been mentioned, but just to show how much of a coin flip this was:

-  If Rahm doesn't test positive for Covid, that was a Sunday crowning for him at Memorial, instead Cantlay gets a win.. but he also beat out the rest of the field to do so

- If Rahm doesn't choke on the back 9 of the Northern Trust, he's in better position going into the final event.. probably good enough to win it with how he played at East Lake

- Don't forget Cantlay beat out BD at the BMW Championship in a tight playoff, probably the most impressive short game display of the year under pressure

- Cantlay did play lights out when he had to in the final event to fend off Rahm, but Rahm also started 4 strokes back

IMO from an optics point it looked like Rahm was just on an absolute mission this season (apart from an iffy stretch) but the 4 wins Cantlay stacked up and, most importantly, recency bias took the award away from him.

Sums up exactly what I was thinking, especially the playoff win against BD.

Cantlay would trade his season with Rahm's in a heartbeat imho. Not the other way around though.

He'd probably trade his season with Colin and Phil, too. Majors get you in the history books.

But is Player of the Year a competition between the 4 players who won majors?

So basically would i want Cantlays or Rahms season, Rahms, easily,

Now would i want Rahms or Morikawa's, Morikawa's, easily

If we are talking from a personal point of view and not from a top player’s perspective then give me Cantlay’s season and the money.

Nope, but the fedex cup and its casino money messes up the conversation every year unfortunately 😞

In terms of exemptions, who has secured their card the longest from their performance this year? Rahm, Cantlay or Morikawa?

Because on one hand you can look at one year's earnings. On the other you can look at potential earnings from just being on tour (sponsorships, etc.)

Recency bias I guess. I think Bryson had a better year than Rahm based on the tournaments they are counting. I think most players would trade DJ’s season for Rahm’s

I will say this.  Rahm did have a hand in his own demise here.  Had he not choked the Northern Trust away that is 2 wins heading into the Tour Championship which he would have then won based on the points and would have ensured POY.

And who’s to say he wouldn’t have done the same at the Memorial…..or that Cantlay would have played a hair more aggressively at the tour championship if the starting line was changed?

Bottom line is the results are what they are and revisionist history is only a guess or a wish.

Interesting result given the major/no major dynamic...

There were six of them, didn’t everyone get one?😏

Cantlay. Same 5year exemption to the FedEx winner as a major plus an extra year for each other win.

Forget contrived money grabs, who played the best golf for the season? Just like Rory over Brooks a couple years back, Rahm was a better golfer this season.

I’m so confused now…..every day on wrx I read how all that matters are wins……just wins……now you tell us Rahm is better than Cantlay because of top tens?  If you are referring just to major winners mattering than it’s Morikawa not Rahm.

Whos a guy to believe?😂
