What is a real snub?

Lots of chatter about various players being "snubbed" for ROTY, POTY, RC etc. makes me wonder if "snub" is the word du jour when someone doesn't get what they want.  Sorta a reverse "awesome" kinda thing.

A typical definition is "rebuff, ignore, or spurn disdainfully."  I don't think any of these players has actually been snubbed.  They were in the mix but a credible alternate was chosen.  If Tiger had been excluded from the Golf HOF that would be a real snub.  .

I am predicting that you will soon find just home disdain there is for Patrick Reed…

Agreed.  The golf reporters tend to get a bit hyperbolic with their headlines at times.

You want to see a SNUB.....IF Stricker has to replace Koepka before the matches get started he may have to eat his "sleepless nights " statement about PR...then Billy Ho...then KN...

That’s a good point. Who gets picked if one or two or three guys have to pull out because of injury or sickness?
I would say number one is Horschel, then Kevin Na…

I wouldn’t think either of those two guys would make a big deal about not getting picked. They would come on the presser and say how happy they are to be here and I think either of them would  likely do better than Koepka.

at the end of the day, I can’t think of one instance where somebody was completely “snubbed“….
You could always make the argument that one person may have been better than another but at the end of the day it’s not like somebody outside of the top 100 in the world is getting picked. All of these guys are legit.

since Koepka for example qualified via the points system , in all fairness Stricker should not get another pick, he should automatically take the player that is 13th in points, if that person is already on the team then it should go to the next highest point getter on the list

There was no snub with the Ryder Cup phone calls. No one that did not get a phone call earned one. Also I am 100% certain whomever that would be named as an injury replacement has been told. They would have been told to keep their game ready and not make any plans just in case they have to be on the team.

All-time snub.  Albert Belle and the MLB HoF.  The man was Mike Trout before Mike Trout was Mike Trout.

I don't know if Faldo played the PGA Tour in 1990, but he won 2 majors that season and wasn't POY.

There are two PGA Tour player of the year awards. On voted on by PGA Tour players and one based on points by the PGA of America. Faldo won the 1990 PGA of America player of the year award. Many times it's the same player that wins both. More than a couple of years where there have been different winners including 2019, 2020 and 2021.

I think some of these guys like Horschel and Reed are basically working the press to buff their perceived desire to play these events and represent their country.

There are plenty of players who can take it or leave it. These guys want everyone to know they're motivated to participate, so if the next captain is on the fence he may pick them over someone else.

Even if that's the case, these guys' egos won't allow them to do it properly. A text to Stricker would do the same, but that wouldn't be public sooooo....

With there being so may Captain's picks this year a snub would have been Finau. Sixth in points. Reed could argue that he was snubbed because he was in the Top 12 and likely would have been a little higher had he not been sick. Scheffler was 1,635.90 points behind. If you apply that to Reed that would have put him ahead of English and Spieth.

Horschel on the other hand has no argument at 17.

Picking Tiger ahead of Keegan Bradley at the 2011 Presidents Cup was stupid! Dude was like 30th in the points standing. Bradley won 2 tournaments that year including a major. Tiger was playing like crap and only got a pick because he was Tiger. In retrospect it didn't matter since Tiger ended up having a decent Presidents Cup and team USA won by a decent margin. But that IMO was one of the biggest snubs of all-time.

Is that true? When did the Tour start considering majors as part of the schedule?

I don't know about that, but I do think Faldo primarily played in Europe. It is the only way I can explain the 9 PGA wins (6 were Masters or Open Champ). He did win Player of the Year in 1990.

The PGA OF America has a point system for POY. I think the PGA Tour does voting. Faldo won the PGA Of America award in 1990.
