1998 Newport Oval Track. Suggestions, refurbish or just get a C.O.A.?

Recommended Posts

I just picked up this Scotty Cameron 1998 Newport Oil Can, Oval Track Newport putter today at a thrift store!

It is either a one of 115 or #115, which were probably given out at a 1998 "American Film Institute Golf Classic" outing or tournament.

I'm guessing it may have been held at Pebble Beach?

The putter does not look as bad as some of the pictures make it out to be. There is very little surface rust and no metal pitting. The Oil Can finish looks 80% in tact and has some very brilliant in colors to it.

A few things about it is that the original grip was changed recently, but still a Scotty and it looks like someone buffed out the face milled swirls. Other then that a solid putter with no top line or flange digs. Oil drag warning and Crown shaft label in tact.

I don't have a lot of money into it. I pretty much stoled it.

Suggestions please.

It being a 1/115 and an Oval Track model, should I send it back to Cameron for a refurbish job and a C.O.A. or just a C.O.A.?

I like the yellow paint fill Cameron's on the plumbers neck which match the yellow AFI paint fill on the sole.

Or I could just game it a while and decide what to do at a later date. What would you guys do?

I wouldn't send to Cameron for a resto as they won't replicate the original finish anymore, and I'd probably skip the COA, I'd send to BOS. Original finish on this was gun blue, which maybe it still has, but the face leaves something to be desired. I'd go for the original black oxide finish and white and gold paint as seen here.

I don't think the custom shop does oil can/black oxide any longer. You would have to hit up bos for that. As for the coa, I can't imagine it would be worth more than the standard oval track newport of those days unless it belonged to someone famous and you could prove it. Still a cool putter though and a nice one to game.

As others have mentioned... No point in getting a COA. If it wasn't from a special event then it would be a different story, but that putter (refinished or not) isn't worth more because it came from the AFI event. If anything it's worth less.

I would send it somewhere like BOS for refinishing and I'd even inquire about getting the AFI info removed (if that's possible).

Agreed with these. BOS did this finishing work for Cameron back in the day, so they are as "genuine" as it comes without forking out the big $$$ and time investment for any Custom Shop treatment. The Black Oxide finish done by BOS on my old Newport is flawless and has held up insanely well. Helluva find!

Very interesting, thanks for the like.

Oval Track putters (Newport Two and Newports) as I understand were 1998 Oil Can's only. Not Gun Blue earlier Cameron Newports.

In the Image I see the different finish and paint scene colors. But I also see the No. 115, like mine.

Now I am getting really interested in finding out more about these.

And I agree with most respondence who say if I di a refurb it should be done by BOS.

Thank you.

That is some good advice, shart6.

Thanks, there is nothing on the top line I would find distracting. My Newport did so I had it copper plated.

That's funny. I also picked up a mint Ping G10 10.5* with the factory installed optional Grafolly ProLaunce Red, 65 gram driver with head cover for like $25.00. I was told the Ping came along with the Cameron Newport from left over items that did not sell at an Estate Sale.

Obviously attendees of that Estate Sale were not golfer.

OH, every club I bought at the Thrift Store had a grip on it.

That's some sweet luck! Sounds like I should start going to some more estate sales rather than thrift stores

To find out the whole story, post over at Cameron Collector. I'm sure there are a few guys there with them. No talk of other refinishers other than Cameron over there though. I'm with others, BOS did the original finish, let them redo it for a third of the price. No need for a coa.
