Brooks Koepka on Tiger, “I’m going to catch him on majors”

Who does this sound like?  Hint - He's a regular poster on this site.

"But the reality is, I take satisfaction from beating everybody more than anybody knows. I take so much satisfaction that there’s something wrong in my head about it. It doesn’t matter what we’re doing, it’s so intense. I might not always show it, but I’m so intense inside at wanting to beat the living crap out of you at whatever we’re doing. It eats me up inside. We could be playing pingpong or butt or whatever. I just want to embarrass you."

🙂

I’ll take , Black opts contractor for 1000 Alex !

No one including Phil one upped Tiger when it comes to gamesmanship.  Perfectly good example was the "inferior equipment" dig.  That one didn't work put very well and Phil ate his words.

I've always liked Brooks.  The guys a winner.  He may not get to 15 but he will likely get more than anyone else  in his attempt to catch Tiger.   10-12 if he stays healthy.

Article seems to indicate that the only players he really respects are Tiger, Phil & DJ.

I've never considered BK as a cupcake.  Far from it.

I thought this was the most important part of that interview:

"

Did you watch the Naomi Osaka documentary?

I did.

It made me sad because it seemed like she had the capacity to say no and exert more control over her life, but she wouldn’t or couldn’t. She didn’t have people around her telling her the truth.

To be honest, there have been times when Blake has been like, “Bro, you need to chill.” Jena [Sims, Koepka’s fiancee] is the same way. I felt bad for [Osaka] in the same way you did. I remember the scene where her trainer came to her and said, “Hey, maybe every month we as a group should sit down and voice what’s going on.” And she was like, “I don’t really have a voice.” That was interesting because you know how she always referred to herself as a vessel? Sometimes you have to be strong enough to have that voice inside yourself and be the authoritative figure. Sometimes you have to sit back, listen and take the criticism. I really liked what Giannis [Antetokounmpo] said: When you’re thinking about the past, that’s ego. That was one of the coolest things I’ve ever heard because when you start thinking of mistakes or screw ups or how you missed that shot or this shot, that’s just your ego being hurt. If you keep staying in the present, you’re fine. The other part of it is that you can’t look too far into the future. There’s a fine little balance in there."

It's so interesting to see stuff like this juxtaposed against "it's fashion, bro" when trying to defend having tags zip tied to his shoes. 😆

[no offense to any current players] but it’s ludicrous to entertain anyone is close to either jack or tiger…they were unimaginably ahead of anyone and it’s borderline offensive to pretend otherwise

here are jack & tigers pga tour wins compared to brooks at the same age

Curious as to what were examples of Phil's gamesmanship at the PGA. Brooks reveals that the gamesmanship affected him to the point where he didn't put pressure on Phil.

If he's being truthful when he says he only cares about winning, that's refreshing in my book. Very few players in today's game think second place is first loser.

I'm all for setting lofty goals but this one isn't happening. He's already too old, unless he plans on Bradying it and winning a bunch in his 50's? But i wouldn't bet on it given how fragile he seems.

Just....interesting. Tiger buzz sawed regular tour events. If Brooks was good enough to win more majors he'd do the same.

Most great athletes use visualization techniques to obtain specific goals. Visualization combined with a specific training program/schedule is a powerful tool for an athlete. They have to truly believe they can reach a specific goal, visualize doing it. Can Brooks actually obtain this goal of equaling Tiger’s majors? In all honesty probably not. But to have any chance, he has to truly believe he can.

Agree however, there has to be an honest assessment of that goal and the requirements to reach it.

BK says,

“In my mind, I’m going to catch him on majors. I believe that. I don’t see any reason that can stop me. I’m 31. I have another 14 years left. If I win one a year, I got Jack. “

If you look at the second sentence, he’s either not sharing the reasons he knows can stop him (which I assume he is well aware of) or he’s deluding himself.

For example,

He doesn’t have Tigers game. 🤣 I mean, Tiger beat him at the Masters, which BK has never won, as an old man with a fused back and nowhere near his TW 1.0 skills.

So, given he doesn’t have the TW 1.0 “toolbox”, and the competition now is even stronger, what steps is he taking to make it possible to “catch Tiger”?

Great to visualize success. I can “visualize” that I gonna make 3x as much money next year. But, what is the plan to get there?

BK sees how fast 2 years can go by without a major. Rory sees how fast you can win them in buckets and then go “goose egg” for 7 years.

Im concerned about how he describes his health “never going to be able to run again”. The injuries sure but hope he’s just being pessimistic to think that at his age.

If I was training a young inspiring professional golfer I would tell them "no running" and focus on other less abusive forms of cardio. Especially a big guy like Brooks. Walking as much as golfers do has all the upside of weight bearing exercise that running would give you  except the cardio.
