Brooks Koepka on Tiger, “I’m going to catch him on majors”

I'm having a hard time figuring out which athlete gets more hate for winning than BK. By a mile, he's the best golfer in majors over last 5 years.  It's not even close. Career below but last 5 years untouchable. Head and shoulders above everyone. Only guy Tiger worried about. What's that saying?

Tournament Wins 2nd 3rd Top-5 Top-10 Top-25 Events Cuts made
Masters Tournament 0 1 0 1 2 4 6 5
PGA Championship 2 1 0 5 5 7 9 9

he is very very good…

but he’s comparing himself to these two:

look at Jack’s major finsishes…he was top ten In every major except 5 between 70-81…all but FIVE….that’s insane

Likewise tiger in the 2000s

brooks is not on the same planet and, as I said, it’s borderline offensive to my golfing sensibilities that he would be compared in any way to jack or tiger..

again, brooks has had a very, very good stretch of 4 years….but to compare him to them is absurd

So, reading about halfway through this thread, we have

  • a group defending the honor of Woods at all costs.
  • Koepka being called foolish thinking he could maybe catch Woods.
  • Koepka being praised for not wanting to finish second.

This is some grade-A WRX stuff.

Could he catch Woods?  Maybe.  Will he?  I wouldn't wager a significant sum, but it seems that some are threatened in some way by the mere notion Woods' total could be surpassed.

For those who can recall old school basketball, it was once said Michael Jordan had a big ego.  Quinn Buckner replied, "you can't even play in this league without a big ego."  When is the last time you played a great round thinking you suck?  All professional athletes believe they can do it.  Some are better at playing the modesty game, but some truth serum would reveal a much different person.

I'm not but he's way better than anyone else at the moment. He's probably going to beat out any active player right now.  He shows up for the big ones. He was hurt this year he still went T2, T4 & T6. To get more than 5 in the modern era is going to be hyper difficult. Winning 4 in two years with 8 top 10's surrounding them crazy good.

First, Michael Jordan is not old school basketball.  You have to go back further in time to get to the old school guys.

Regarding BK and Tiger, I don't think that any reasonable person believes the BK will come close to threatening Tiger's record, just like no reasonable person thinks anymore that Tiger will break Jack's record, given his age and health status.

I think most of the negative comments are directed towards Koepka's ignorant, narcissistic, and immature comments about most things in general, not his golf game.

This....FFS, If I was on the PGA tour, I'd have the same mentality. If you aren't thinking that you could win every single major and you don't want to dominate your competition, why the heck are you even playing?

Jordan didn't want to just beat you. He wanted to humiliate you. He wanted in his own words "to bury you at center court".  He was also selfish. After one of their playoff wins, when he had lit up the score board, early in his career, one of the coaches said "Michael, nice job, but remember, there is no "I" in team".....Jordan turned around and said "Yeah, but there is in WIN, isn't there!"

Tiger had that mentality. I don't want to just beat you, I want to humiliate to you. Jack, heck wasn't Jack the first one to say what Brooks said about most of the guys on tour can't win a major..

Ironic that everyone here is beating him up for believing in himself when every other great athlete was the same. Tom Brady...same. He still keeps his 6th round draft pick announcement in his locker. Looks at it before every practice and every game, and says it just makes him want to prove to everyone how wrong they all are.  Federer said once "The man who wins is the man who thinks he can". What's wrong with Brooks thinking he can?

Most forget just how good jack was.  This idea that he was only good because of skinny fields is just false. His resume will never be duplicated.

Curious as to what were examples of Phil's gamesmanship at the PGA. Brooks reveals that the gamesmanship affected him to the point where he didn't put pressure on Phil.

Is that an Olds Cutlass?  My buddy had one.  It WAS a rocket!  You're right about the handling, though.  We almost died one night taking a sharp turn onto a highway onramp.  Car fishtailed and my buddy overcorrected and we almost went tumbling down the embankment into the highway traffic.  Came this close.  Man, we did some stupid stuff back in the day.  Good times.

Both Tiger and Brady are obsessed with training and process.

Brady practices the most simple throwing mechanics non-stop

Tiger once told Nick Whatney a little “secret”….doesn’t matter if it’s a 3 footer fior par on Thursday, or a 6 footer to win a major, exact same thoughts, same process, same putt.

BK brags about how he doesn’t practice, that he doesn’t get motivated for non majors.

That’s fine, but it’s the opposite approach and attitude of guys who actually own the record books.

And I don’t remember TW or Brady when they had just started putting up championships, ever giving out interviews, laying back in a swimming pool, after 2 years of winning nothing,

And talking about how they are going to break the records of the legends of the game.
