Putter options - wide blades

beaney

Recommended Posts

Hi all

In true WRX form I’m having a year of changing putters, constantly!

The issue seems to be that although my current putter (odyssey ten triple track) works pretty nicely, I just seem to prefer something that looks more traditional!

I do need help with alignment, so a wide bodied blade (like a odyssey double wide or ping Kushin) gets me some of that, with a little forgiveness too.

However I also seem to gravitate and putt better with plumbers neck than heel shafted, but most of the blades are heel shafted (mizuno m craft 4, odyssey double wide, ping etc).

so what options are there for wide blade and plumbers neck? Can’t seem to find many, or am I just trying to find something that doesn’t exist!?

thanks.

Depending on the budget Sik might have some options.  Scotty square backs also might fit the bill.  Even roll er2.2 (I haven’t ever seen one of these in person and don’t know if they are as wide as the er2, but pictures look like it is).  Taylor made del monte might be worth looking at also (I’ve never rolled one but if you like inserts might fit the bill at a reasonable price)

Seeing as you're in the UK I would suggest the Sink Golf Wide Blade. https://www.sinkgolf.co.uk/collections/all/products/303-stainless-steel

Price isn't bad at all and Olly can customize the head if you want or mill you a custom one.

They look really good, and love the bespoke element. Have you tried one?

I haven't I've heard good things, I think some posts about them if your search the forum. Figured give a local option especially at his price point. All the other options listed are great to.

Maybe Bettinardi BB8 Wide?

That is a really good option, best BB model they have done in a long time.

I was very torn between the BB8 wide and the Ping Kushin which I eventually went with. I seem to setup and putt better with a slant neck.

We're going on a Minimalist Adventure who knows were we'll end up:

Thanks everyone.

had a word with PXG but they’re looking at a minimum of 9 weeks wait for orders.

also had a few great emails with Olly at Sink golf, who is such a nice guy and will customise to whatever you want, and deliver in 2 days!  However, i’d be buying blind, and with them being a new brand, the risk is that if I don’t like it, it could be very tough to sell (I know, typical WRX mentality of worrying about resale value!), whereas with others there’s a get-out option!

the evnroll looks good, as does the taylormade and the betti.

thanks for giving me a lot of choice!

Nine weeks is a wait but it may not really be that long. (And I’d probably wait if that’s what I wanted.) In August I ordered a PXG Battle Ready Mustang with plumber’s neck and custom length and lie and it arrived in 2 weeks. Competitive price and the putter is excellent. I don’t often like any kind of textured face as they feel dead to me. (My other favorite putter is the smooth steel face of the Ping Hepplers.) The PXG has a lively face that feels just right. Mustang is sort of a wide blade footprint with an angled flange that helps alignment.

The Closer was my other PXG finalist. If you want pure traditional, it is a great one. Head is not as wide as the Mustang and that angled flange is a look I wanted. Visually funnels the ball toward the target. PXG’s putter lineup is outstanding and they give you all the options. The face puts a nice roll on the ball. The Battle Ready head covers deserve mention — very nice.

Unless they are just out of closer heads, 9 weeks is way long. I ordered a battle ready bat attack on 9/4. It shipped on 9/14...

the person that I spoke to at PXG said that they’d managed really well all year to keep waits down, but all of a sudden they’re struggling to get components and the wait time has jumped up.

I've got a few big comps the next few weeks before the season ends, so 9 week wait will mean that it doesn’t arrive for any of that and will be deep in to winter.

the closer looks nice, but following a couple of mentions above, I’ve got a TM Del Monte 1 coming tomorrow. Looks lovely and the price is great (very un-TM!) so I’m excited to see how it goes. And if it doesn’t go well, you have all given me some great alternatives!

If that's the new TM wide blade then I've rolled it. It's nice. Looks good. Rolls it well.

How about Piretti Cottonwood II?

It’s not a super deep flange, but has a little extra over a regular blade, and available in plumbers neck. 303 SS, tri-sole, head weight & sight line options, etc. Mine is center shaft, about the same size as the Bettinardi Studio Stock 28, pleasing firm feel.

Scotty Cameron Special Select Squareback 2 - I love mine.  I’ve been down the wide blade rabbit hole for a while (2014 Select Squareback, Evnroll ER-2, 2018 Select Squareback 1.5, Bettinardi BB-8W, Odyssey Double Wide). The Squareback 2 has been the best of them, for me.

I've sunk dozens of hours searching over the years. Ive had a bunch of the ones mentioned, the widest and "square-est" looking (my preference) is/was a Rife Switchback XL. A Machine M2A (I think) was close. That Sik looks great too
