SST Puring Driver Shafts

Birddog2

Recommended Posts

I watched a video yeterday of players commenting on the SST shaft puring process, a few players commented positively on their drivers. I had my i95 irons pured when I was fitted and they all feel remakable.  So anyone with an adjustable driver, fairway and even hybrid, the adjustability is nothing more than a fitting tool if you have your long game shafts pured pured. I had not thought about this until after the video.

Has anyone opted for a pured stationary shaft in these clubs over adjustability with todays shaft technology?

SST Pure/Spine align/FLO/etc is all unnecessary and has no effect on how the shaft plays in modern high quality graphite shafts.

So given 'todays shaft technology' - I do not.

The adjustability in drivers, fairway woods, and hybrids has always been a fitting tool. Once you're set, you really shouldn't be changing the settings. If you use a shaft that has been through the SST Pure process and decide to change your adapter settings, you can always pull the adapter and orient the shaft differently once you figure out the right setting.

To add to Stuart G post:

The Pured shaft position should not change when an adapter is adjusted. Look at it this way. Say the Pured position is in line with a line on the grip and when you grip the club, the line falls in a position in your hands. When adjusting the adapter, the line on the grip (hence where in your hands when gripped) should be at the same place when the club is gripped. Picture a ribbed grip. The rib should remain in your hands at the same position regardless of the adapter position.

SST Puring service has been around for as long as I can remember. I've had it done with drivers in the past, and could never notice a difference. Does anyone know if tour pros do this with their shafts? That should tell you all you need to know about whether it makes a difference or is just a well-marketed but unnecessary product ha

for Taylormade drivers the shaft actually rotates so the alignment of the grip is different so the puring won't stay in alignment.  Think the same for Titleist from what I remember.  Callaway stays the same.  I had some irons pured and honestly couldn't tell the difference.  Don't think I'd spend the money on it again.

So, I would assume that you changed the Pured position in one of your clubs to an un-pured position to make the distinction?

Hey, just offering you my opinion.  Take it or leave it.  To me it's not worth the money for you obviously it is.  So go for it.  Certainly won't hurt anything.

OK.  I'll leave it.

And why would you assume I think it's worth the money.  I don't and would never pay for it.  I actually sat with Dick Weiss at dinner a few years ago when he was going round and round with the USGA.

Don't believe in it.  You didn't say it was just an opinion.  You said it didn't make a difference you could determine and I was just curious as to what the testing protocols were.

ok my testing protocol is having 2 vokey SM8 wedges one with the shaft pured and the other with the same shaft not pured.  I see no difference at all in feel or consistency.  They are both still in the bag and have used them for well over a year.  And sorry for making incorrect assumptions about you, that wasn't intentional.

I knew Dick Weiss quite well. SST Puring is more important with graphite shafts especially those in longer clubs. I think at one time there was well over 60 manufacturers of graphite shafts. Talk about a roll of dice. One never knew the quality one was getting.  Some were so bad, SST Pured or not they should have been trashed. I have always maintained that SST Puring will make the club play and feel consistent. I never claimed any distance gain and if there was it was because of the consistency and feel, the golfer could jump on it some and fell comfortable.

Myself I have my 1-3-5 woods shafts Pured. I FLO the rest of my club's shafts. SST Tour Van will (use to) Pure shafts free for Touring Pros  if they could use the players name on a list of those they have Pured. Many say why the hell not. It cannot hurt. I know one well known Touring Pro that had his putter shaft SST Pured. He said, it can not hurt.

Puring is a scam. Most shaft companies will tell you it does not do anything.

One could easily argue that that's the best course of action for any shaft that has any significant asymmetry.   The assumption that there is any one axis of the shaft that's more important than any other axis during the swing is really the biggest flaw in the shaft alignment concepts (whether sst pure or FLO) that's never been properly validated.
