Light(er) steel iron shafts

Recommended Posts

As title states, looking for recommendations for light(er) X-stiff steel shafts for overlength irons.  Doesn't have to be superlight.  My next set of irons will start with a 37" PW with 3/8" gapping and looking for something lighter than DGX100 (for example) to help keep swingweight down as much as possible.

Weight is the main thing.  How much lighter than DG?  What about 120 DG?  Lighter still?

Don't expect to get much help with swing weight just going with a lighter shaft.  Balance points are usually adjusted with lighter shafts such that there will be little (if any) reduction in swing weight for the same length and head weight.

Only shaft I know that will actually help with swing weight for longer builds is the steelfiber i110's.

Also, typically with the 3/8" spacing used in the attempt to get an approximate MOI match, you want the swing weights to be heavier on the shorter clubs in the set.

I should have stated that whatever clubs I end up going with (I'm going to get fitted) will be a lighter weight head like the Mizuno B heads or the equivalent in another OEM.  So that should help keep SW down.  I don't know a lot about shafts and just wanted to get a feel for what's out there.  I'm most familiar with DG, but I'm sure KBS, Nippon, Rifle, etc. have good options in light(er) weight steel shafts.  I just don't know what they are??

Like Stuart mentioned above, Steelfiber i110cw will help with longer builds as they are butt heavy and will swing-weight about 3 points lighter.

Also, if you don't have heads yet, Mizuno make lighter "B-weight" heads.  I believe Mizuno uses these if you were to order  a set +1/2" or longer.

Correct.   Head weight is really the key to managing swing weight on longer length builds.

Unfortunately (for the sake of getting a clear answer to that question), there are LOTS of options available and most evaluations of those options by others here on the forum will always be very subjective.   So the only way to get any kind of useful answer is to just get out and test as many options as you can get your hands on.   That's the only way to get any answers that are applicable to your swing and your preferences for feel.

Fair answer.  I suppose that's what the fitting is for.

That's what the process of fitting is for.  Whether it's done with an actual fitter or something you take on all by yourself only changes how easy it might be - but both can work if done properly.

Don’t sleep on the Apollo Spectre, very similar to DG 105 and at $10 give or take, you can try different tip cuts on the cheap.
