Best carry bags

Recommended Posts

Hi all. Been lurking here for years but I think it’s time for a new stand bag. I live in NYC and mostly take commuter transit to courses (mostly Bethpage) and I need a stand bag where I can fit a pair of golf shoes in.

I have been looking at Jones, Vessel and Stitch but it doesn’t really look like they can fit a pair of shoes.

I have been using a sun mountain 3.5 lightweight bag since 2014, so it’s definitely time

What's wrong with just re upping with a 3.5?

I've got a 2.5+ and love it

I'd love it even more if a train were involved.

Pretty sure I could fit a pair of shoes in the side, but haven't tried.

It's on the larger side, but the Hoofer is a good carry bag that can fit a lot of items, shoes should easily fit in the large garment pocket.  I bought one looking for a little more room over my Jones Utility and it's actually TOO big for me.  I found a middle of the road bag in a Titleist Players 4, ample room and small enough to carry comfortably.  Very happy with it so far.  2nd Swing on ebay has some with no logos for like $175 shipped BNIP.

For walking and if weight is a concern, SM 2.5 or Ping Crazelite.  I ended up with the Ping and it’s been great all summer.   I liked how the bag balanced with the strap setup better.  The small glove Velcro patch on the Ping is genius where it is, but I didn’t know it was there when I bought the bag!  However, You couldn’t go wrong with either.

You think a pair of shoes would fit you JR the big pocket?

Love the 2.5+ and I've tried a lot of different bags.  Not the best strap system in world, but it works well enough.  The utility of the way the bag lays out is perfect for me as a walking golfer and as BYK said, I would think you could get a pair of shoes into the bag comfortably.

I was just looking at the Jones utility one. It definitely looks like something that will fit my needs, but I need to pick it up and try it out first.

I have the original Utility not the Trouper... but it is one of, if not my most, favorite bags ever.  It's a little on the heavier side to carry but the straps are nice.  I can see if I can fit shoes in the side pocket today...  depending on size, it might be tough.  Great bag otherwise though.

I have a Sun Mountain 4.5 and can easily fit my shoes in the big side pocket. They just have to be arranged where they are stacked and soles facing towards the zipper instead of just flat next to each other and still have plenty of room. I’m assuming that if the side pockets for the 3.5 or 2.5 are the same size you have a good shot. I’d recommend just going to the golf stores in the city and looking at the bags and stuffing some shoes in to see.

I’ve also done the train commute from NYC and know your struggle. Another option that I used to do was just use a generic shoe cover/bag with a carabiner that you can easily hang onto the accessory loop that all bags have for towels/brushes etc.

This is also an option as well. I was thinking about this. I already have a nice shoe bag. Most of the time I wear flip flops so it’s not as heavy to put in the bag

It does sway around a lot and does get annoying though so I would still consider treating yourself to a new bag if you find one that can fit your shoes. I remember New York Golf Center near Penn Station had a decent selection of bags. I’d suggest looking at the bags there in person and then once you find a model you like, go online and order a color scheme you like if the ones in the store are limited.

Hoofer Lite easily swallows a pair of shoes; not the lightest of the lightweight carry bags, but easily the most comfortable for me of that category - the straps are pretty plush. Bonus:  Works on a cart fairly well, and easily converts to single strap if you happen to be out with a caddy. I think the straps are more comfortable than Sun Mountain's, but it is definitely a little heavier.

I'd be hesitant to routinely put a pair of shoes in the apparel pocket of the 2.5+, especially larger sized shoes.  Read a number of instances of the zipper failing on the 2.5 apparel pocket from being overly stressed.  The 2.5+ is a great bag, but you need to be aware of the limitations of the ultralight bags.

Klitch footwear clips on Amazon.  That’s what I would do.  19.95 and allows your shoes to be clipped onto a bag of your choice.

I have a 2.5+ and that I use as my carry bag.  I truly love the bag; but I wouldn’t try to put shoes in there.  Also, for 19.95 Sun Mountain sells an EZ Fit strap conversion that makes the straps better (IMO).

I just bought the Jones Utility 2.0 Trouper because it was on sale.

We’ll see how it goes

If it doesn’t fit a pair of shoes, I’ll just return it

I was going to order one from the sale but found the Olive on ebay in pretty new condition so went with that. It came in yesterday and I love it! I'm joining a club next year so having a hidden cooler pocket is nice to have 🙂

Replacing a 15+ year old hand me down bag from my Dad so can't compare to much of the other competitors, but it's so much lighter and feel quality. I hope you love yours!
